Not one of my favorites. Musically, I think this one is pretty dull. The mix is terrible. I read that each Smith was responsible for controlling the level of their instrument, and that's why it sounds like such mush. Definitely, one of the least impressive mid-period Smiths pieces of music. Lyrically, it's okay, but I don't find it particularly believable. It's really a piece of drama, more than anything. Morrissey used to whine about how this song should have been a massive hit and it wasn't... He was wrong this time. I give it a 7.

One of my favourite Smiths/Moz suicide anthems. . .makes doing yrself in seem noble--even heroic. Suicide with a good beat you can dance to.

No, Mama. . .let me go!

I would say that this is one of the few Smiths/Moz songs that the music surpasses the lyrics. It makes me feel like running! Back in the cassette days I remember this song would get me all riled up and then Well I Wonder would come on and calm me down:)

a 9

what an amazing song this is, lyricly and musicly, I still wonder why this
song is seen as just an average Smiths song, it should be ranked at the
same hights as 'light'/'bigmouth'/'glove'/'how soon is now', etc.

the finest lines are
I thought that if you had an acoustic guitar
that it meant that you are
a protestsinger
I can smile about it now
but at the time it was terrible

I'll give it an 7 soley for that lyric - superb.
But, overall, not one of my favourite Smith tracks... (and that's not to say I dislike it at all)

of course they do and this is NOT The Smith's

so there....

mind you, you do like Kill uncle so....

If not this, then what? "Girlfriend In A Coma"? "Sheila Take A Bow"? "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish"? Those are the only ones I can think of that come close to being as poor as "Shakespeare's Sister".

I love this song, next to Nowhere Fast it was one of the first songs that really got me addicted to the Smiths.

on a sidenote I played this in a jukebox here in San Antonio not too long ago with Jen (spinster) and Kim (appleblonde) helping me sing in the bar!

Kim only did the long 'noooooooo', though she shortened it a bit.

Jen luckily was game and sang along with me as I usually do try to make an arse of myself in public :)

Only 6/10 I'm afraid. Moz sings FLAT at the end. I always found this a bit cringeworthy. It ruins what is an otherwise alright song.
