All good insights. Thinking again, maybe the "operation" in question is a veiled reference to shooting up (which ties it in with Sunny). It would certainly explain the "With a tear that's a mile wide / In the kite that you're flying" -- "high as a kite" etc. One path to heroin starts with chasing the dragon, then somebody helping you to shoot it ("what the hell have they stuck into you") and finally doing it yourself, which the character does in "Sunny". Hmmm.

There was a user who posted his own remix entitled "The Operation (qonox radio tedium mix)" Although it excises the drum solo entirely and ends a bit abruptly it's a pretty professional job. Will have to listen again with headphones for Alain's shouts.

i remember that at leeds in 1999 - i was excited cos i really like this song . I agree that it starts and ends strangely but the bit inbetween is a very very catchy song !
