One of my favourite Smiths songs. Every version, included the one with Sandie Shaw.

Life is never kind, but I know what will make you smile tonight.

This song's a bit dull, innit?
I have to subscribe to the Paul Young theory of the Smiths i.e. lots of their early stuff was a bit too spartan and plodding (especially on the debut album; plenty of good stuff on Hatful).
The songs in the mid to late period had a lot more zing...

Dull? Paul Young? I don't know what you're on about.
I hear a band brimming with passion, right from the very first note they recorded.
This song is not one of the highlights on the first album, but still a really good album track, and yes, the Sandie Shaw version is really good too. Perhaps the best recording of the song, musically.

Paul Young (can't quite believe I'm discussing him!) once said that he liked a lot of the Smiths stuff from the mid-period onwards when they started using more imaginative arrangements including strings, keyboards etc. I kinda feel the same way. I don't rilly like the first album at all (much prefer the Hatful versions of the songs which are on both).

Lloyd Cole (help I'm obsessed with 80's singers' views of the Smiths back catalogue!) also said that his first album (Rattlesnakes) was much better than the Smiths' first one. I agree with that too. Rattlesnakes still sounds great...

I love this song, it's perfect in everyway, one of the few things

This is an 8 to me, but I've given too many 8s lately, so not more for a while..... Between a 7 and a 9 , I had to go with a .........

**7**

This was always for me, my least favorite song on the debut, a 7....BUT then I lived through the experience...now it's a NINE...I feel the words

I DON'T OWE YOU ANYTHING
BUT YOU OWE ME SOMETHING
REPAY ME NOW!!!!!!!!!

Although, my version has many explitives yielded towards a particular person....

especially in the society we live in that is so anti-male when it comes to finances...

SERIOUSLY, Get your fat butts off the couches and GET A DAMN JOB

What is up with these women who think they are entitled to so much money????

STANDARD OF LIVING...my ass....GET A JOB
