The effect of listening to these performances from 2002 is to put the current shows/songs into context. (Especially in relation to the incredible version of Speedway.)

In 2002 there is desperate, passionate energy - a sense of battling for survival - the urgency and importance of every moment/word is sharp, direct, dramatic, dynamic.

This is not going through the motions. It feels like the real thing. Death sex and trying to communicate...

It used to mean so much.

I mentioned this to a mate the other day funnily enough. We came to the conclusion that the gigs he did when he was unsigned were definately some of the best. Greatest hits style sets and some really impassioned performaces. It was make or break time for the man. The London Forum shows in '99 and of course the RAH in '02 spring to mind. The shows he did after YATQ came out were also good as it was like the big comeback so we shouldn't be too dismissive but I agree with your sentiments!
