Lil' Rob, But You Can Call Me Robert

Guest
This year had a bunch of bangers. 'Twas a good year for music. Here's my list. Don't bite my shit either.

10. Bright Eyes - Lifted blah blah blah (Came out in 2002 but discovered this gem this year)

9. Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers (cool shit but not as good as two previous releases)

8. Zwan - Mary Star of the Sea (Cool shit from former pumpkin James Iha)

7. 50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin (Haven't dug a rap record like this since Pac's All Eyez on Me)

6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell (f***in RAWK the way it is 'posed to be)

5. Placebo - Sleeping With Ghosts (This one sucked compared to Black Market Music, but Cebo is still one of my favorites)

4. Sigur Ros - () (Also came out in 2002, but got it in early 2003, been bumpin that shit since)

3. Beth Gibbons - Out of Sea (f***in' release a new Portishead record bitch!!)

2. Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights (The greatest debut album of all time. Recognize bitch!)

1. Radiohead - Hail to the Thief (f*** anyone who didn't like it, it was a brilliant, beautiful album from the greatest band in the history of the world. f*** Coldplay!)

Close but no cigar:
Deftones, The Stills, Lil' John and the Eastside Boyz, Mogwai, Travis, Goldfrapp, everything else sucked including Morrissey's shitty Under the Influence compilation.

And which of these would you recommend for someone who is 30 years old, Robert?

Is it Zwan for me?

p.s. I consider Morrissey's "U.T.I." a gift from God.

p.p.s. What is Billy Corgan up to these days?

Actually....

1. Wrens - Meadowlands (Heartbreaking. Inspiring. Brilliant. Flawed. Perfect)
2. Constantines - Shine a Light (Even better than the debut. Unmatched live)
3. Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People (Unbelievably imaginative)
4. Radiohead - Hail to the Thief (Inching back to past glory)
5. Shins - Chutes Too Narrow (Pop music you can actually listen too over and over)
6. Decemberists - Her Majesty (Best Story-pop band working)
7. the Rapture - Echoes (Physchos)
8. Decemberists - Castaways and Cutouts (Reissue of debut)
9. BRMC - Take Them on on your own (panned by many but they do what they do well)
10. Belle & Sebastian - Dear Catastrphe Waitress

Run from Zwan

they knew they sucked so they broke up.

My pick: Belle & Sebastian's "Dear Catastrophe Waitress"

Have not heard of any of the bands you & the crtic, that other bloke, are talking about.

But I'm over 30, also.

What does being over 30 have to do with anything?

> Have not heard of any of the bands you & the crtic, that other bloke,

I'm 32. You can never let the fire die when it comes to good music. Its a youngsters game plain and simple so you either look to youth or you're stuck with derivative shit. The wrens, my #1, are all pushing 40 but you wouldn't know it.

Well, for one thing your Willie doesn't work as well as it used to!

Not to be pedantic, but Zwan is Billy's band, not James's. Also, Jimmy Chamberlain is in it too.

My Top Albums of 2003 Thus Far

Only got a few albums this year:

1. Johnny Marr + the healers- "Boomslang" (EXCELLENT! I play it a LOT)

2. Boz Boorer- "Between the Polecats" (Very fun. Introduced me to some serious ROCKABILLY)

3. Automatic Hotel- "Automatic Hotel" (A friend of mine's local L.A. band- great rock sound)

4. The Gears- "The Gears" (Another friends' band based in Seattle that I caught in San Francisco and finally got their Demo- really good guitar-god rock'n'roll)

5. Virgin Recommends- Volme 9- Sampler from a cool club in L.A. called "BANG!" the CD has The All-American Rejects "Swing Swing" (great), Hot Hot Heat "Bandages" (AWESOME), The Libertines "I Get Along" (pretty cool) Ladytorn "Seventeen" (okay), The Streets "Let's Push Things Forward" (EXCELLENT) The Ravonettes "Attack of the Ghost Riders" (so-so), Cat Power "He War" (blah), The Datsuns (good raunchy riffs), Ry Cooder "Mambo Sinuendo" (smooth Cuban music), Les Nubians "J'Veux D' La Musique" (Sound like Sade- fun jazzy stuff), The Soundtrack of Our Lives "Sister Surround" (KICKS ASS!), The Music "Take The Long Road and Walk It" (DUDE- THESE GUYS F*CKING SHRED!!!!), t.A.T.u.- "Stars" (these Russian Lesbian kids have great voices), Jesse Malin "Queen of the Underworld" (yeah whatever, dude), Susan Tedeschi- "Alone" (Oh my GAWD can this woman WAIL! Woooo! Damn.), Roysksopp- "Remind Me" (I play this song more than the others- it's a real dreamy electro tune that basically sucks you in and refuses to get out of your head for like, eternity much like "How Soon Is Now?" by some garage band from the 80's called The Smiths)

Cheers!

Jay

Re: Radiohead was AWFUL! and the year ain't over yet!

If I hadn't the heart I have, I'd kick you in your testicles.

Dear Pops,

Zwan may be a little too hardcore for your boat to handle. I'd stick with Wilco, R.E.M., and Morrissey. But if you really want to live on the wild side, I'd suggest the Doves album from last year.

The best album I've heard in a long time is

Kings of Leon
Youth & Young manhood

A fantastic slide into a land of Blues, Pyscobilly and Punk attitudes.
A world of Love,Sex and Death
Plus dressing up in high heels and lipstick.

What life is all about........
