I’m a guitar player who grew up first playing in bands during the 90’s grunge era. And I’m a fan that actually prefers the chug rock as you call it. I can appreciate that it’s a slightly heavier take of Moz’s love and influence of 70’s glam and punk rock. I wish there would be more chug rock songs like something is squeezing my skull for example.

Ugh, a grunge fan who prefers the chug rock sound. Be gone.

A heavier sound is not the issue. It's the use of a fairly stale, bland tone heaviness that is the problem. It's like the band was married to the awful 90's digital Boss distortion pedal that plagued the decade.

There is no "glam rock" element to the sound. For that, refer to the music on I Started Something, and Sheila Take a Bow. That's how you do it. You don't manage that with a very banal, L.A. power pop tone that has plagued his sound since he moved to L.A., and inspired a bunch of depressing outfits like My Chemical Romance, and Panic At The Disco.
