No wonder so many anti-Valentine's parties now exist, like the one coming up this Thursday in New Jersey, inspired by the man for whom love is a Miserable Lie, the Anti-Valentine's Morrissey Night at a club called, ecologically enough, The Compost.
For those of us, then, for whom Valentine's Day is even worse than a miserable lie but an outright mockery - ie the single adult - perhaps the poetic sentiment of Morrissey's latest song, That's How People Grow Up, might offer some timely balm.
"I was wasting my time trying to fall in love," he yodels, brightly. "Disappointment came to me and booted me and bruised and hurt me/ I was driving my car, I crashed and broke my spine/ So yes, there are things worse in life than never being someone's sweetie. As for me, I'm okay. For now anyway ..."
