I love love love this song. both the music and the lyrics are beautiful and oh so sad. close to a classic for me. 9,5

A melancholy beauty. Reports at the time suggested this song was about Hungerford mass murderer Michael Ryan, but I don't believe that was ever confirmed - probably just reporter speculation. Still, what a great concept if it's true! "Oh, but now look what he's done." Indeed! Ah, the romance of crime... and a lyric that only Morrissey could create. A solid 9.

reminiscent of the theme he had going on in "sweet and tender hooligan" yes?

ah yes, another seemingly effortless Morrissey/Street beauty.
back then, all you used to hear was people moaning about the break up of the Smiths (instead of celebrating these wonderful new songs) and how the new stuff simply wasn't up to scratch.

little did they know that 15-20 years later, these Morrissey/Street compositions would be hailed as the high watermark in the Morrissey solo repertoire with only the occasional latter-day song getting anywhere near...

Agreed with above, to me The Smiths were consistantly excellent, but the Morrissey/Street era was the peak and dare I say most of my favorite Smiths/Morrissey songs come from this time, after that ended it's been a rollercoaster of up and down.

For some reason strangely even with all the stuff I have and being a fan for pretty much my entire short life this song escaped me though until about 3-4 years ago and im sort of glad it did in a way, it's an amazing feeling discovering new Morrissey material to listen to!

9/10

a 5

a song I never took the time to like it, my first feeling at that time was
a poor song, I never play it, it might be 10 years or so that I heard it

next!

[moonriver i guess]

Completely forgettable. I'm sure I've listened all the way through "Burglary Years" at least 30 times and this song has NEVER left an impression on me. Nice while it lasts, but as soon as it's over, I've forgotten all about it. Stick it in a category that would include "Boxers," and "Sunny," and there's no comparing them.
