Hold on, it's not what it seems...the list was chosen by Rufus Wainwright. There's loads of other Morrissey references too - see links below.

The list is as follows:

1: Judy Garland
2: Stevie Nicks
3: Dusty Springfield
4: Madonna
5: Kylie Minogue
6: Morrissey
7: Barbra Streisand
8: Pink
9: Prince
10: Kate Bush

This is what Rufus has to say about Morrissey:

"Whether he's gay or not, he is the gay Elvis. He is among the greatest entertainers of our time. The banter, the dancing, the stage-craft, it all conspires and you know exactly what Morrissey is. He is heroic. He is a total pachage, like Dean Martin or Prince."

You can find the full list (with comment) here...http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/story/0,,1942438,00.html

He's also mentioned in Miranda Sawyer's article here...http://music.guardian.co.uk/pop/comment/story/0,,1942295,00.html

Martin Rossiter on Morrissey here (number 18)...http://music.guardian.co.uk/pop/story/0,,1942701,00.html

Also mentioned extensively in Amy Lame article here...http://music.guardian.co.uk/rock/story/0,,1943546,00.html

It has to be called TOP 10 MUSICAL ICONS of Rufus Wainwright, not necessarily gay icons.

Silly boy Rufus.

Ahem. I should have mentioned that this month it's a Gay special of Observer Music Monthly.

Peter

P.S there's some more references by Miranda Sawyer and Martin Rossiter and Amy Lame that I've found and added links for above.

I've never understood what a "gay icon" is supposed to mean... Nobody ever mentions "straight icons"? For instance, was Rock Hudson a 'straight icon' at the peak of his popularity? Most probably.

"And their categories have formulae that are set in stone. These say that if you're male, gay and in pop, you must be flamboyant, or tortured: Freddie Mercury, or Morrissey."

Ah, that ever-charming trait of the music press - the art of assumption.

Madonna? since when is madonna gay?
Who said she was?!?!?!

As someone said already, being gay has nothing to do with being a 'gay icon'. Or so it seems.

Why single out Madonna? Since when are Prince, Kate Bush, Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland etc. gay? I don't know much about Dusty, so I have no idea about her, but as far as I know, nobody else on that list is gay. :)

madonna was gay with a chinese woman once, cant remember her name though, she was probably just using the publicity to break through to a gay audience knowing her

Ouch!! so bitchy wizbit!! :D

I didn't know 'being gay' is an action and that you can 'do it once'. :D "Oh, let's see, what should I be today - gay or straight?" "I was gay when you met me last Thursday, but this weekend I feel like being straight. I'm thinking of being bisexual next week." :p
