Fiona Dodwell: "Morrissey Was Rejecting Toxic Masculinity 30 Years Before It Was Fashionable" (April 27, 2024)

I love how she says "My piece for Gabfest" as if someone's commissioned her to write it. When it's just her own website.

Morrissey Central "INTERLUDE CHART POSITION" (April 27, 2024)

That's exactly what he was implying, yes. I'm sure all the major labels by this point are well aware of the rabid Morrissey/Smiths collector demographic and - this being late capitalism and all - they will happily fleece that market for as much as they can and for as long as they can.

Fiona Dodwell: "Morrissey Was Rejecting Toxic Masculinity 30 Years Before It Was Fashionable" (April 27, 2024)

I guess the young Dudwell was too busy blu-tacking Michael Jackson posters to her bedroom wall in 1985 to have ever heard "The Headmaster Ritual". Sigh.

"Interlude" enters Official Vinyl Singles Chart at #9 (April 26, 2024)

That's no way to talk about Dodwell!

"Interlude" enters Official Vinyl Singles Chart at #9 (April 26, 2024)

This hasn't yet been mentioned on Morrissey Central. (Maybe it still will be, who knows?)

"Interlude" enters Official Vinyl Singles Chart at #9 (April 26, 2024)

IANADOAC charted at #3 and disappeared from the Top 100 in its second week. For comparison, Johnny's "Fever Dreams" album in 2022 charted at #4 and disappeared the next week. It's pretty common these days.

"Interlude" enters Official Vinyl Singles Chart at #9 (April 26, 2024)

((And for anyone who cares about such things, James' new album went from #1 to #77, which is actually a decent showing these days for a second week on the chart by an indie / cult band.))

"Interlude" enters Official Vinyl Singles Chart at #9 (April 26, 2024)

(In related news, both The Sound of The Smiths and Hatful of Hollow went back up the UK album chart again this week...)

"Interlude" enters Official Vinyl Singles Chart at #9 (April 26, 2024)

Literally the only thing this tells us is that "Interlude" was the 9th most popular vinyl single released for RSD this year, behind offerings from artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Kate Bush, Queen, and John Lennon - but ahead of RSD releases by Daft Punk, The Charlatans and David Byrne. There's...

    Strange/unexpected Moz references?

Amazing, really, that the Guardian can publish an article like this without mentioning Morrissey. (So I guess this is an unexpected non mention...) I absolutely Nia Archives, by the way: twee drum 'n' bass isn't something I ever thought I'd hear, but it's excellent.

What cover version would you most like to hear Morrissey sing?

Given that this was written as an homage to/ piss-take of Morrissey (I've never been quite sure, although I remember Harvey talking about it somwhere), it would be so great to hear him belt it out:

    Strange/unexpected Moz references?

I can't believe this piece from The Onion is 20 years old now. It's still an all-time classic of its kind. Opening paragraph: Would someone tell me how this happened? We were the f***ing vanguard of shaving in this country. The Gillette Mach3 was the razor to own. Then the other guy came out...

    Strange/unexpected Moz references?

I've never understood how a site like that generates any revenue at all. There's literally nothing funny about any of the articles, ever. So weird.

    Strange/unexpected Moz references?

A brief Moz-mention in a long essay by the esteemed theorist Terry Eagleton, in the current issue of the London Review of Books.

Morrissey Central "A RUSH AND A PUSH AND THE MUSIC IS OURS" (April 19, 2024)

I always enjoy your visceral dislike of "I Am Veronica"! For me it towers above something like "Dagenham Dave". I love all the different vocal melody elements to it, even if it ends up being a weird song structure. (Agree with you re nonsensical, though, although presumably it makes some kind of...

Your combined Morrissey/Smiths Top 20 songs

I'm feeling kind of listy today and I've seen countless "Smiths best songs" and "Solo best songs" rankings over the years but not so many where it's all smooshed together (for obvious reasons I guess). If anyone fancies posting their list below, I'd love to read a few. Here's mine (for today)...
