Years Of Refusal: Midweek position in the UK - true-to-you.net

18 February 2009

Midweek sales figures in the UK have 'Years of refusal' at #1, but Morrissey is very closely tailed by Lily Allen who is only 900 copies behind. Please support Morrissey by buying 'Years of refusal' as soon as you can.

I agree with you about Duffy but I am wondering, in connection with the phrase "just to show that the charts arent only about" that sort of thing, to show who? The people who believe that awards and charts and so forth signify talent will probably never have a well-developed sense of aesthetics. If they do occasionally exhibit some taste it will only be inadvertently. It would be heartening if those people didn't seem to dominate culture at moments but really, most of my favorite discoveries in life (apart from Morrissey) have been people who failed to ever win any awards or sell truckloads of books or records during their lifetime. That's not to say that any artist ought to pursue obscurity intentionally or even find comfort in it, but I do think it is healthy to try to have some sense of perspective about it. There is a terrific essay by Anthony Lane in Nobody's Perfect in which he looks at the books that were on the NY Times Best Sellers list in 1945 and discovers, basically, that the quality of the books on it wasn't any better than the crud that often dominates current lists, and that the #1 in particular had been completely forgotten, and rightfully so. I am really trying to sum it up but the best line is "time has done its work." Time can take a very long while to get around to it, though!

You may not want to acknowlege it, but Morrissey is already mainstream. Perhaps not at that Jessica Simpson level, but certainly in that widespread and equally manufactured Indie/Emo scene. You know, that scene where guys wear hideous tight clothing and pair it with retarded haircuts.

Morrissey is by no means obscure. Remember, he's been on MTV since the very early nineties. In fact, I still remember when 'The More You Ignore Me...' debuted on MTV, and he had already been on the scene for a few years. Suedehead was also popular before this. Thus, if someone in their mid-thirties or early forties asks you what kind of music you like and you say Morrissey, more than likely they'll respond: "oh,that guy that sings suedehead; always depressed."

Oh, how I miss Morrissey's heyday!

For my birthday last year my mother wanted to give me something special & knowing how much I like Morrissey, she was really happy when she found out (after researching in the internet) that there was a book about Morrissey, written by the drummer of his former band.

She ordered it for me & I´m now in the possession of a book called:

Virtually every artist who scored a Number One single or album in the 1960s(for example)is remembered in perpetuity, whilst many artists who bothered the Top 10 but failed that all elusive Number One barely register a shrug when mentioned now, regardless of how big they were at the time.

Plus...in a deliberately spiteful manner, it allows those of us who believe to cock a snook at the doubters and naysayers who'd have us believe that he is washed up and irrelevant these days.

Fans of Morrissey want the real thing, ie. a CD, not a download. So there's hoping copies are being sold as we speak.

  • WTF. Is Moz advertising expensive time pieces or what? One on each wrist and the liner notes for ‘Refusal’ state ‘Watch PARMIGIANI’. And there was me hoping that he was referencing some obscure Italian film director … some hope. Now Morrissey did tell us that in the end, post the Northern leaches and the vile Q.C’s , that his ‘royalties brought him luxuries’. But I don’t need it on the liner notes for his new long player … I mean WTF? It is just the sort of crass ostentatious declaration that he used to attack Duran Duran et al for. Moz famously said that he launched his diary to music … well … ‘Sorrow’ from Maladjusted was probably the last truism he put on a record. His latest offering … a 'balance the budget' piece of corporate melancholia is rubbish. But hey Moz, you were good in your time … expensive watch or no watch …

It's interesting how nearly all albums now are either leaked illegally OR by the band. A lot of new albums are also streamed on Myspace by the band before it comes out...this is an interesting strategy to me.

In fact, as of today, you can listen to the entire new U2 album on Myspace. This shocks me somewhat, although I'm more than happy to get to hear it early...it sounds pretty sweet actually.

I am enjoying the new album a lot, but I do find myself skipping over "That's How People Grow Up" and "All You Need is Me". I like both of them, but I kind of "played them out" when the greatest hits came out. So, does anyone know why they were on the new album? I heard he changed record labels so maybe he just wants to keep them "in circulation" in case the Greatest Hits goes out of print.

Also, my limited cd/dvd set included the b-sides "Shame is the Name" and "My Poor Education" though they are not listed on the back.

Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying the new Moz album and keeping the online bitching to a min.
