Millions have been wiped off markets and bonuses, but the crunch has also created more royalties for Morrissey. Simon Evans reports
Sunday, 3 August 2008

Excerpt:

The credit crunch was cited as the reason for the recent cancellation of a dance music festival in Leeds. The website TheFilter.com recently said that the number of people listening to downbeat music from the likes of Morrissey and The Smiths has soared in the past months too. Heaven knows we're miserable now!"

  • I'm 38 and have loved Moz and The Smiths since I was 15. Where I work (Royal Mail) there are many different age groups. So many of the youngsters love Moz and The Smiths, Buy the cd's and really do love them. So I can well believe the above story.

  • My advice is to just spend, spend, spend your way out of it! So yes, by more Moz!

  • You often see photographs of Morrissey in the Finance sections of British newspapers. I bought the Independant on Sunday the other day and it was quite a big picture that accompanied this story (which only had a slight reference to Morrissey in it).

    Clearly British Photo-Editors have taste?

  • Blatant name dropping used to get people reading an otherwise dull observation on the state of the economy- they even used Moz's name in the sub heading ffs!

  • Morrissey and The Smiths cheer people up because they allow people to stop pretending that they're so ecstatically happy all of the bloody time.

The happiest people I have ever seen have been at Morrissey gigs.
