Full story from Music Week:

"Morrissey racks up his 45th Top 40 hit in all, his 29th solo and his fourth from current album Ringleader Of The Tormentors, as I Just Want To See The Boy Happy debuts at number 16 on sales of 6,370. It’s scheduled to be the last single from Ringleader Of The Tormentors, which is therefore unlikely to improve much on its current cume of 140,614 sales, a tally which increased by only 603 last week. It’s a step back from his 2004 triumph You Are The Quarry, which has so far sold 369,329 copies."

  • Singles were not really as strong. I know a lot of people who liked IBEH who werent into Moz. Same with FOTGTD. Nothing really did the same this time.

  • that YATQ has more than double the sales of ROTT. ROTT is far and away the better album.

that said, ive not bought a copy of ROTT, but thats due to Moz's boycott of Canada- ihav boycotted in kind and hav not even listened to his music since the announcement (save one-off listens to each new b-side for curiosity's sake).

  • ROTT has sold more copies in the UK than any Moz album other than Viva Hate and YATQ (yes including Vauxhall & I) I don't think his career is finished yet.
Bizzarely, the new single (number 16), has only sold as many copies in it's first week than Sing Your Life (number 33). So maybe it is.

  • So the single sold only 6370. As if that weren't worrying enough a figure, consider that that comprises all 3 eligible formats. Now assuming that the sales were mainly hardcore fans buying all 3 formats, that means there are only - at best - roughly 2120 fully loyal/buy everything Moz fans in the UK.

    Oh

  • from chart oblivion.
He got a nomination back in 2004 and the reviews were of a similar quality (Meta-critic compiles all or most reviews to give an overall score; he got 73 or 74 for both).
However, in 2004 he had 4 top 10 singles; this time it's only 4 top 20 but have any other British male solo singers got as many this year?

Also, in response to the comment about the fans buying all three formats, I think there are a lot of us who only bother with CD singles which have brand new songs. Well, there's me at least!

  • Does anyone know the worldwide sales for this album or For that matter any Morrissey or Smiths album? I know YATQ was supposedly his biggest solo seller but I dont know any numbers. My guess is The Queen Is Dead is the Smiths biggest seller since according to The Rolling Stone Top 500 Albums of All Time in '04--it listed TQID at 850,000 sales in the US alone

  • A lot of singles are placed in the uk charts based on radio play also, as no radio station will play Morrissey's new singles it has to be based on just people buying or dowloading singles. Its becoming increasingly difficult with the fact that the smaller HMV stores dont even stock singles so you have to purchase them online. I myself bought 6 and downloaded it about 10 times but thats dedication i guess.

  • Morrissey's peak was 1992. He will never be bigger than he was back then. He was 33, movie star handsome, had a GREAT album, had a great tour which included stops at The Forum in LA, The Hollywood Bowl, Madison Square Garden, and The Palace of Auburn Hills. He never looked or sounded better back then. He was a great big beautiful star. All artists have peaks and valleys. I guess be content with the Morrissey of now, it is all we have...

  • Moz needs to take a step back and not release another album too soon. His next studio release should be for April 2009. Give us a great Live album and some one-off singles with great b-sides in the meantime. Come spring of '09, his latest album will be a big event again, he can celebrate his 50th birthday in style with another hit album.

  • Isn't everybody forgetting something. First, this album has been out less than a year. Give it a chance to catch up. Second, sales will shoot up once a US tour starts and some more airplay happens.
