  • COLDPLAY are definately overrated. Have you heard their cover of "Stop Me If You Think..." -- it's apthetic. True, their music is kind of tuneful but their lyrics do not nearly approach the rich territory of Morrissey. They should never be held in the same breath as The Smiths or Radiohead. As for THE QUEEN IS DEAD being overrated I think that is rubbish. In the American press it is far underrated -- it is usually in the Top 20 and should PROPERLY be atleast top 3 all time. It is overrated only in that STRANGEWAYS could arguable be considered The Smiths actual masterwork, in it's kalaidascopic but resigned melancholy. TQID is certainly more accessibile, thus it's stature as the greatest Smiths album.

  • ...it has to be Coldplay...both for their music and themselves...overrated...I read the guitarist didn't know who Peter Buck was and if you're a guitarist in an indie/alt. rock band or whatever they are, you must know certain people and influences.

And how can Pet Sounds be on this list??!! It IS the best album ever!!!
    Anonymous -- Wednesday September 28 2005, @01:21PM (#179986)
  • It's okay to dislike Morrissey - you can call him a whining whimp. Fair enough. And you can hate his voice... Fair enough. But you cannot discuss the fact that he is a great lyricist. And of all Smiths and Morrissey records - The Queen is Dead contains some of the finest poetry ever written...

And no, no, no, no! How can Chris WHINY Martin and his boring band be on that list? I didn't know that they had an album out that could qualify for overrating... I mean, then it has to be a great album with new musical thinking in it - and none of their albums have that... jeez...

Never understood the Sex Pistols thing either... they were really just a designband meant to create a wave of youth rebelling... come on, they were just a bunch of drunks and drug addicts... that's not new and certainly wasn't for the time...

To knock anyone of these albums when there are so many other crappy albums is stupid in my opinion. The writer has nothing good to say about any of these albums. The writer should stick to his Vanilla Ice CD.

  • I suppose that the most over-rated album isn't necessarily the worst, just the one with the largest gap between merit and reputation. For that reason, I'd say that Nevermind is the most over-rated. I thought that "Smells Like..." sounded like American music at its worst (an unwashed and lazy version of Bon Jovi) when it came out and that the singing style was studied. The rest of the album sounds turgid and lacking in melody.

Joy Division, Van Morrison, Kings of Leon, much of The Rolling Stones and John Lennon, all (and more, I'm sure) could have made it to that list.

  • Hatful, Strangeways and Meat Is Murder are all better. The Coldplay album is the most over-rated album on the list, the hype has been surreal. Reviewers must have been taking bungs from EMI, some were saying it was one of the all time great albums only days after hearing it! How the FUCK?!?!? They must have listened to it twice! Speed Of Sound sounds like crap U2 for about 30secs then just sounds crap.

Running it close is Sgt Pepper, which has one great song (A Day In The Life) and a few ok ones but it isn't even the best BEATLES album.

    Other overrated albums (at random):

    Blue Lines - Massive Attack
How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb - U2
    O - Damien Rice
    London Calling - The Clash
    Employment - Kaiser Chiefs
    Silent Alarm - Bloc Party
    Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin

  • Is UNDERRATED in my opinion, especially here in the states. I've always said, and I stick by this, that these are the greatest albums of all time:

    1. The Queen is Dead
    2. Joy Division--Closer
    3. Slint--Spiderland

Hands down. I can go back and forth between TQID and Meat is Murder for my fave Smiths album, but I think TQID wins the prize for its epic feel. Strangeways is an excellent album, but it is not as cohesive. Nirvana's Nevermind is definitely an overrated album, but don't write them off completely--In Utero is brilliant. As for most overrated, Oasis DM is a good one, in that it is not even good enough that we should be discussing it ten years later. And COLDPLAY? I don't even need to comment. Think about it. Which is the overrated album? Let's see, the signature masterpiece of the most important guitar band of the 80s vs...COLDPLAY. Ridiculous.

    • Early Cure is sublime. Disagree. Robert Smith is an extremely underrated guitarist. Not too fond of his vocal style these days, but most of the 80s catalogue, and the Bloodflowers album are wonderful. "Pornography" and "Disintegration" are definitely their best albums.

As for his lyrics, read below...

"like a feeling that i'm down
      deep inside my heart
      like I'm looking out through
      splitting blood red
      windows in my heart
      from higher up than heaven
      and harder down than stone
shake the fear that's always clawing
      pulls me clawing down alone
as I'm spitting, splitting blood red
      breaking windows in my heart
      and the past is taunting
      fear of ghosts
      is forcing me apart
      and the further i get
from the things that i care about
      the less i care about
how much further away i get..."

  • The thing with the queen is dead, is, it has some of the best smiths songs and some of the least good.

It has, in my opinion, the best song ever (any artist): The boy with the thorn in his side. I know its over, cemetry gates, there is a light is also some of the best songs of the smiths.

Then you have frankly mr. shankly and vicar in a tutu, in my opinion, some of the least good songs i smiths history.

The album is like a rollercoaster, it has peaks and...well...not peaks?

Meat is murder and Strangeways here we come, is good, straight through (with one or two exceptions).

Haha, i kinda lost myself, but ehhhh, THE END.

It's not bad, just, well, relatively over-rated I guess. Which could be argued about any title on the list, except TQID, of course!

  • The Queen Is Dead, if anything, is underrated. I love all of the Smiths albums, but The Queen Is Dead is absolutely genius--it is my favorite album of all time by any artist, of any era, of any genre. I believe that "Pet Sounds" is overrated, as are the Beach Boys as a whole. As an aside, while I enjoy Coldplay, to put them on the same list as these other artists at this point in their career really is not appropriate, as they have not yet stood the test of time (which may well occur, but it is too early to judge).

  • This poll is ridiculous and a waste of print. All of these albums are worthy of ownership for any music afficianado. The Queen Is Dead is greatness.
Coldplay is the best band since the Smiths. All of you Coldplay bashers, I guarantee do not own any of their albums, certainly not X&Y. X&Y is very good, so what if they are hyped, they have earned it. If they do nothing else, they will go down as one of the greats in rock history. #1 in 25 countries.........although thats what many of you bashers dont like the fact theyve had success, if they were more obscure you'd be all over it.
Its funny to me though how people will passionately dismiss the Smiths or Coldplay or "fill in the blank", while never really listening to a proper album.

Coldplay...changed no one's life for better or worse, innocuous, inappropriate to be on such a list.
