Morrissey at Work on New Album

Kati Llewellyn reports:
The man who put the 'M' in Manchester is in the news again. Surprisingly, we're not here to tell you Morrissey's playing "X" festival, [insert fancy name here] Hall, or a couple dates around Europe. Oh, it's bigger than that...the kind of thing that makes people yell "THIS JUST IN!", "BREAKING NEWS!", or even "STOP THE PRESSES!".

Everyone's favorite Smiths frontman is currently in the studio with producer Jeff Salzman (the Killers)...and our good friend death. Yup, Morrissey is at work in Rome in film soundtrack god Ennio Morricone’s former studio, which happens to be located in the catacombs of a seventeenth-century church. Ooh, how goth.

According to his publicist, "It's apparently the most full-on rock record Morrissey's ever done. It's a balls-to-the-wall rock record, not a slow one like the last one." The album is close to being wrapped, and is tentatively scheduled for a spring 2006 release. At this point in time, tour dates have not been released, but hey, I'm sure they'll be, uhh, balls-to-the-coffin.

  • This doesn't sound so promising. "Balls to the wall" and Morrissey in the same sentence? And no slow songs? I'm approaching this with trepidation....

  • I regard this change in direction as being good news as I found most of Quarry to be the essence of mediocrity, BUT, I wouldn't want another 'Southpaw Grammar'.Still, let's be positive, in 'Arsenal' and 'Vauxhall' Morrissey pulled out two of my absolute favourite albums - sheer brilliance from an undoubted genius.

But - didn't the GQ article state that Morrissey and Jesse were saying the new album was "in the same vein" as YATQ? What would be good is heavy but melodious (it's the latter that Southpaw failed on). Still, pre-album statements tend to be pinch -of salt worthy - I recall some publicist making Maladjusted sound like it would be a masterpiece. Then we faced the reality that it has three good songs at tops.

Let's hope for the best with this new record!

  • We'll just have to wait to hear it to judge for ourselves.
It doesn't really matter to me what style the album is. I'd be happy with a Christmas album. Morrissey would do far better than Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole or anyone else.

Oh to hear Morrissey sing Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby"!

  • Who might this secret person be? Didn't Morrissey also say something like this about YATQ on release? And isn't the wording of this story pretty hyped, like 'a bullet in the gullet'? But all the same, it's not bad at all, especially the description of the Gothic cave where the boys are immured and the album being spookily incarnated! Balls to the coffin's ok 'cos spring is in the air!

It would be nice if we could get some confirmation about whether the main songwriter this time is Jesse Tobias, Alain or Boz?

  • This is such great news!!! I love when Morrissey rocks out. I think it's also a great idea; we're not having a simple retread of QUARRY. I simply cannot wait! I love how the next half of year will be building up the anticipation. Slowly info will trickle out...we'll figure out the name of the LP (I'm sure we'll be voting on our favorite when we've heard a couple of the reputed titles), various song titles, hopefully he'll try out some of the songs on a mini-tour of California (fingers crossed!!). Welcome back Moz!!!

We won't see another Southpaw Grammar album - Morrissey never makes the same album twice. Let's face it, the whole album isn't going to be all "rocky", since Morrissey has to fit the gorgeous "I'm Playing Easy To Get" on it! Nevertheless, it's going to be great!

    • ...is a very old U.S. Navy term, apparently:
"Dating back to the 1950's, this refers to an all-out effort. The phrase originated from an aviation term. On airplanes, the throttle control handles and the fuel mixture are often topped with grips that are ball shaped, thus referring to pilots as "balls." If you push the ball forward close to the front wall of the cockpit your result would be a top speed."

I think that definitely describes lots of the Smiths music, and with Moz doing lyrics, this could be a rocket launch altogether!

  • it's the quality of the songs that count. a great song with a lovely melody can thrive on just about any arrangement. but an amazingly imaginative arrangement cannot rescue a half-baked song. the song writing is all that counts. believe me.

  • First off. I'll admit my trepidation to the quote attributed to Morrissey's publicist that this will be the most rocking album to date. I don't really understand the complaints regarding YATQ being "too subdued". The man is nearing fifty. The album was distinguished, appropriate, and fit his new senior statesman persona perfectly, that and I'm just getting older.

Above all though, I buy Morrissey records for the lyrics. The music is secondary. I discovered Morrissey before The Smiths, so the addition of a flash guitar player is just gravy to me.

What I personally found disappointing about "Southpaw" was the lack of lyrical depth we've become accustomed to. "Boy Racer," "Dagenhem Dave," and "Best Friend on the Payroll" just didn't offer much lyrically, quickly progressing into the respective song's chorus/refrain. While certain other songs musically seemed to stretch to the extreme, i.e. was the drum solo in "The Operation" really necessary? Lastly, the best track recorded during that period, "Nobody Loves Us" never even made the album. The whole episode just didn't seem to click.

IMO, if there is any truth to today's statement, I would guess the new album would sound like "Don't Make Fun of Daddy's Voice." A track I initially didn't care for but grew on me.

Still and all, it is amazing we are even discussing a new album. It was only a short time ago Morrissey was unsigned, exiled, and seemingly forgotten.

Either Moz is still severely pissed off (about any of a number of things) or he is trying to appeal to his new generation of fans. It seems like a risk to go "balls to the wall" at this point in his career, but I'm glad to hear that he is up for it. As long as it's sincere, it will be beautiful.

  • Thanks for your appreciation of the astonishing Ennio Morricone.

However, "THE maestro" as he is understandably called in Roma (and indeed elsewhere) has been on a concert tour in the Far East, and so the studio was available, and is nice and quiet ~ conducive to producing good work.

I can assure you all that the Maestro continues to record most of his work there. I visited Forum while on a little holiday my brother gave me in Italy, and as I suspected from the 239 CDs (and those are only the film soundtracks and I don't have all of them!) in my collection ~ Forum Music Village is not Abbey Road!

    Good mixing facilities, though...

A great shame, because Morricone deserves the best, as no doubt you good Morrissey fans will feel about your chap.

Whatever your expectations are for the forthcoming album ~ I hope they are not too high, and I hope they are more than met in the fullness of time...

Lots of love from Hue in London
