Watching baseball coverage on ESPN this past Friday or Saturday (don't remember exactly)and hear an obscure Smiths reference...a sportscaster says... "What Johnny Marr was to The Smiths Dontrelle Willis is to the Marlins".

  • there is an espn anchor who makes those types of references when referring to the leader or best player of a team (i.e. scott weiland and velvet revolver).

i'm sad that i missed the marr/smiths references but i might have been too dumbfounded by hearing it.

From the ice age to the dole age...
  • It was probably John Buccigross. He's a big music fan, and always uses lyrics/band references. Prior to the last NHL season, he used some lines from a Smiths song (Panic?) in his Ottawa Senators preview. Keep an eye out for his preview to this season, chances are it could contain a Smiths/Moz reference.

On a completely unrelated note, how friggin' good is the Twin Cinema LP by the New Pornographers? Any chance Carl (A.C.) Newman will be invited to the recording sessions? We can only hope...

  • I'd say Dontrell is to the Marlins what Morrissey is to the Smiths. Willis has a knack for being center stage on a diamond full of stars!
