Today's Observer (the Sunday edition of The Guardian) carries a story on Sanctuary's current financial difficulties (full report: Heaven knows British music bastion is miserable now). This much we're already aware of, but the first paragraph of the report is pretty interesting:

There's a big announcement in the offing from Morrissey, according to sources at Sanctuary Group, his record label. But even if the glum rocker's next album sells millions, there are likely to be some long faces in the Sanctuary boardroom. Heaven knows they must be miserable now - and it's got nothing to do with the former Smiths frontman.

That said, Morrissey might be revealing what he thought of the colognes and fragrances he purchased from Selfridge's last week, and how he plans to return them (with the receipt) first thing tomorrow. • A big announcement?! Sanctuary wouldn't release news which was negative to their business. Which means that it must be positive news and something that is likely to make them a lot of money.

I wonder if this links to the recent news that Moz is collaborating with an 80's band...... but then Sanctuary would only be happy if that was a 'sales-machine' band like U2.

A Moz album on it's own is not going to solve Sanctuaries financial problems.

I wonder what the announcement is..... I can't figure it out.

  • ...is a new album or tour a "big announcement?"

With the quality of work he's been putting out these last few efforts, a similar release is to be expected, not hailed.

The news won't be "big" until he's replaced his lineup, preferably with you-know-who.

  • a new album is a big announcement for a recording artist. ithink people are overestimating the connotations and meaning of the word "big".

they didnt say an "earth shattering world altering" announcement to suggest something like "Morrissey has cured cancer" or "Morrissey has made contact with extra-terrestrial life". they said a "big" announcement, and from the perspective of the label, Sanctuary, the announcement of an upcoming new studio album release from their biggest star is indeed a "big" announcement.

        • Agreed, but I'm relying on most people here having a healthy skepticism about the information in the book, which is after all in the public domain, and often, I think, relevant.

Besides, that time was marked by a surge of popular interest in the possibility of space visitors which made a strong impression on a lot of people. I also understand that Dan Browne's recent phenomenally successful "The Da Vinci Code" is now being legally challenged for over-zealously borrowing from a book written back then, mentioned here:

"The term 'ancient astronauts' designates the speculative notion that aliens are responsible for the most ancient civilizations on earth. The most notorious proponent of this idea is Erich von Däniken, author of several popular books on the subject. His "Chariots of the Gods? Unsolved Mysteries of the Past" [mid-'70's?], for example, is a sweeping attack on the memories and abilities of ancient peoples. Von Däniken claims that the myths, arts, social organizations, etc., of ancient cultures were introduced by astronauts from another world. He questions not just the capacity for memory, but the capacity for culture and civilization itself, in ancient peoples. Prehistoric humans did not develop their own arts and technologies, but rather were taught art and science by visitors from outer space.

Where is the proof for von Däniken's claims? Some of it was fraudulent. For example, he produced photographs of pottery that he claimed had been found in an archaeological dig. The pottery depicts flying saucers and was said to have been dated from Biblical times. However, investigators from Nova (the fine public-television science program) found the potter who had made the allegedly ancient pots. They confronted von Däniken with evidence of his fraud. His reply was that his deception was justified because some people would only believe if they saw proof ("The Case of the Ancient Astronauts," first aired 3/8/78, done in conjunction with BBC's Horizon and Peter Spry-Leverton)! • "You Are The Quarry" was his swan song, ie. Last ever album. And a FAntastic album it was too! It was a Perfect Morrissey momentum where he came back after 7 years and had everybody (well, most people) eating off his hands. This was his way of saying "F*** You" for the last time BUT on a Grand Scale: London Meltdown, Big tour and big stages -and then a big mystery. Cancelled gigs. This is where the story ends. Agree?

  • Why oh why do people keep saying that Morrissey's next announcement will be of retirement? Patently not. A new album is on its way - and hurrah to that. I mean, the doom merchants need to remember:

Morrissey has already said there WILL be a new record. He told Stuart Maconie. Now, he might have been referring to 'Earl's Court', but we know he wasn't, and for several reasons:

Firstly, because AFTER the release of Earl's Court, Morrissey made his anti-Sanctuary statement saying that, in terms of the NEW ALBUM, he was not "under pressure" and that everything was "at hand".

Secondly, Deano said he's been offered the opportunity to co-write.

Thirdly, Boz said tracks were ready for Morrissey when he required them.

Fourthly, Alain Whyte has postponed the Red Lightning tour to work on the next record - see above.

What more evidence do you need?

That said, I REALLY hope this isn't just going to be Quarry redux. Quarry was a mediocre effort, and I agree with the poster who said that it's probably gonna be the same old same old given that the line up hasn't changed. Since he evidently won't call Johnny Marr, or even consider new collaborators, the least we can hope for is a)a new producer and b)Boz and Alain to return to the standards of the ever-wonderful Vauxhall. Boz needs to write a new 'Jack The Ripper' and Alain needs to write a new 'Why Don't You Find Out?' or 'Seasick'. Otherwise this new record will be another letdown, I fear, for me anyway.

This will turn out to be - new signing with Sanctuary - new album. Boz Boorer/Alain Whyte co-write. Jerry Finn produces. Very little progression. I'll lay money on it.

  • "Patrick Yau, an analyst at Bridgewell, predicts the company may ultimately resort to a rights issue. 'If they're going to ease the debt burden, at some point they may have to go back to shareholders,' he said yesterday."

Can anyone please explain the 'rights issue' in this context? I think indirectly the article hints at Sanctuary's main failings and what they need to do to get their act together.

Matthew Knowles, acting kinda 'crazy right now', has to be gently led away to a smaller office and budget.

PR has to be restored with the rock-writers by drawing up clear detailed contracts and, most importantly, a active commitment demonstrated by Sanctuary that they know what words like honesty, respect and integrity mean. (Many spew these out without checking their dictionaries).

And, where their big stars like Morrissey are concerned, they need to recognise their own double-standard portrayel of reaching out the redemptive hand while at the same time exploiting the renown, image and reputation of trusting genuine artists, and building minimum opaque non-communicative working relationships, to keep themselves afloat. Morrissey's imminent announcement is, as far as I can gather, an irrelevant but attention-grabbing hook for the article; he's on to their tricks and will make his announcements independently.

Their lazy professional attitude must be overhauled if they are to achieve an attractive sustainable market niche with mature tried-and-tested artists, and they've no time to waste.
