"The Smiths - 100 Great Rarities"

Has an 11 page article listing the latest valuations of 100 rare Smiths Collectables.

"RUSHOLME RARITIES"

"It has been over 12 years since The Smiths' Top 100 rarities list was first published in RC 159. Since then there have been some seismic shifts in value of the band's rarities. At that time - 1992 - it had only been five years since The Smiths had split, and Warners had yet to embark upon their reissue programme.

As time has passed, it has been recognised that The Smiths were one of the most important and influential UK bands of the 80s - and many successful 90s and current bands have cited them as a major influence, thus stimulating the interests of newer young fans. more importantly, many original fans now in their 30s and 40s have more spending power, benefiting from the use of Ebay and other internet sites. These factors have contributed to the continuing rise in value for many of the items here..."

Sorry I can't type it all in and don't have access to a scanner at the moment. They do have a web site but when I go to it, it says 'coming soon'.

  • I think the most sought after would still have to be the negative 7" Hand in Glove.
The last time I saw this for sale/auction was @ 18 months ago starting at $3,000. As expected, many lookers but zero bidders.
Would be nice to see how everything is panning out nowadays.

  • I remember back in 84/85 my local purveyor of import and rare vinyl had a copy of the Still Ill test pressing on his wall for about $5. Still can't believe I passed on that one.

I am so glad this subject has finally come up. For years I have wanted to use this as a poll question but with a slight twist. Maybe David will ask the question in the next poll "What are the most rare Smiths/Morrissey collectibles you own?" You know, it doesn't have to be just records. Could be books, magazines, posters, stickers, pins, clothing....whatever you'd like. I know my collection is pretty extensive as I am sure many of yours are. Anyway, for now it is interesting to hear about everyone's record collection.

    • From the magazine:

"The 7" was released with Shelagh Delaney appearing in a shade of grey, however, 7" green sleeves were also pressed. Its difficult to confirm whether these were produced for test purposes, or whether the limited numbers printed were deliberately released into the market.

Conversely, the 12" release of this single was printed with Shelagh Delaney in green. However, 12" copies exist in the colour grey, and are unheard of by most."

  • I've compiled a comparative list of the 1992 and 2005 record collector top 100 rarities listings:

    http://uk.geocities.com/stuartincambodia/record_co llector.htm

It is interesting to see how things have moved up and down in value over the years. For example, all those Australian promos have disappeared to be replaced by Japanese 12"s and Australian CD singles. The meat is murder US promo has really fallen down the list, etc.

Any thoughts on the latest list? Do we think the values are realistic? For example a meat is murder 7" TP went for a mere £300 recently on ebay, whereas the UK headmaster ritual CD can be had for less than £45.
