A fan on the Lloyd Cole website posted a question for Lloyd Cole and Lloyd in turn posted his response:

Q - lloyd, would you be kind enough to tell us if you were friends with morrissey circa 1984/85 or so?

A - He came to see the Commotions when we played an NME show on Tottenham Court Road in London, mid '84. He was as charming as you'd imagine. We were friendly for a year or two, he changed his phone number pretty much every month, I would have needed to pester his PR to keep in touch. I wasn't about to do that. I haven't seen him in almost 20 years.

  • I saw him play with the reformed Commotions in Hammersmith last autumn and it was blinking brilliant!

  • ...by someone who was there at the time, that Moz was seen at some of LLoyd's shows back then in the States (Athens, GA?) and that Moz didn't try to hide the fact that he was quite "enamored" with Lloyd and wasn't necessarily there for the music.

    Did anyone else here this?

  • His last album (2003) is as good as his work with the Commotions.

  • As for the "Moz and Lloyd in Athens, GA" story, it may be plausible since I know Moz and Stipe were friends, and Stipe is pretty much native to Athens (or at least that's where REM began). Maybe even Natalie Merchant was in the mix, too. Interesting. Speculative, but interesting.

  • I remember Morrissey once said that Lloyd was more interesting as a person than anything he ever released as an artist. I can't remember the exact words - but it was something along those lines.

I searched for the quote, but couldn't find it. However, I did find a little something of interest:
