'Singles' goes platinum in the UK

According to the BPI website, The Smiths 'Singles' was certified platinum in the UK last month, only their second album to reach this milestone. You can see a full list of Smiths and Morrissey sales awards by going to http://www.bpi.co.uk/flashindex.html and doing a search of the certified awards. The sales awards to date so far are:

(Where platinum means shipments of 300,000, gold 100,000 and silver 60,000)

  • I thought a certified gold record was 500,000 copies sold (or shipped, perhaps) and a platinum record was one million units. I also thought a silver record was either 250,000 units or 100,000 units.

    I can't beleive they haven't had more platinm albums! it's incredible.

    I'm tempted to go out and but 200,000 copies of 'Meat is Murder' to drag it up to platinum status.

  • You hear about people like Steps going 28x platinum all the time. We Smiths fans would be better just ignoring record sales and listening to records. It's always been this way. No point in trying to crow about record sales...you either love them or you don't.

  • Where is the 'The Smiths' album? It did go Silver & Gold, did it not?

    'The Very Best Of The Smiths' album definately went silver on it's release in 2001. Don't know if it went gold yet?

    Why are these album not on the BPI list?

  • Looking at the list the first thing that strikes me is that somebody must have a uncomplete collection of smiths and morrissey albums since the albums sold different quantities. How on earth can these people survive not having all the albums?

  • Are these world-wide figures or just awards within the UK? I ask because if Silver means 60,000 records shipped/sold, that seems awfully low for the worldwide fan base that Morrissey has.
