He is, indeed, wonderful. I saw him in the Dublin Olympia a few years back, small venue, he was unbelievable and played for at least 2 hours.
As an aside, I coincidentally happened to be listening over the last few days to the renowned American composer Philip Glass' two symphonies based on Bowie albums, The "Low" Symphony and The "Heroes" Symphony. Extremely impressive. Seek them out, if you can.

David Bowie - Low is definitely one of the most important records. So influential, I'm sure way beyond the seeming popularity of the record. I mean, even though it has at least a couple of hits it is still pretty far out there but I'm sure that this record was heard by a lot of people that were very happening at that time. It definitely was a big record for Eno and no doubt very important to his career as a producer.

I had Changes One Bowie on vinyl when I was a little kid and I didn't really take time out to realize that it was a collection. I still hear it as an album and it's a classic. :D Lots of Bowie is uneven for me. I will love some songs and just not get others at all. But Low is good all the way through and the sounds hold up to this day. For a record that owes so much of its style to its production, it is remarkable that the sound hasn't dated as on so many records from that time. It's too bad he didn't do more with John Lennon because Fame is one of the best songs ever.

Bowie is just the best. I saw him in Manchester in the infamous tour when Moz pulled out as the support. Sadly thats the only time I've seen him in concert. Looks like I'll be rooting all my old "tapes" and vinyl out of the attic later now and having a Bowie session!!

I'm not a huge Bowie fan, well I like the singles and a few other tunes

But Low is an quality album the production (is it Brian Eno?) is amazing

just noticed 'Dave' has made this point already oh well

One of my heroes. The first record I ever bought of his was "The World of David Bowie", which was a collection of material he recorded from 1967-70. I thought it was just amazing, and with every record I purchased after that it just kept on getting better. "The Man Who Sold the World" is still one of my favourite albums, 20 years on. I will never, ever get tired of listening to this extraordinary man. :)

I first saw him at the Riverside Studio in 2003 and then at the NEC in the same year. I also saw him at Wembley in 2003 and at the 2004 Isle of Wight festival and they the best experiences of my life. He is curating a festival in New York next June which is going to culminate with him doing a set so who knows, maybe an album and tour will follow. I bloody hope so.... :D

you shut your mouth.. who doesn't like Bowie?
if there's one thing he should be credited for is for making glam rock likable to people with poor musical taste. the man's wonderful.

This is weird, because I've been a huge Bowie fan from the age of 14. He was really the hero that made me listen to decent music, as it were, and I found his ideas about rock theatre, or what you might call it, so cool. You can't be dull on stage, so you better act, and here was this other-wordly guy that was so good at it.

Then after discovering Morrissey/Smiths I saw the video clip of them singing "Cosmic Dancer" - I thought it would be so cool seeing two people you admire so much both on stage, right? But their performance was just so weird, and I hate to say it, but Morrissey just made Bowie look so contrived and phony.

They may have had something in common in that they both know how important it is to sell the artist and not just the music, also there was/is the sexual ambiguity and their appeal to everyone who felt "different".

But Morrissey's fans throw themselves on stage to kiss his feet, you get the feeling he's baring his soul and all that, that he is, as he once said, "launching his diary to music". And then in comes Bowie, the alien entertainer/businessman whom you really can't touch. Quite literally.

I mean, I love them both, but I thought the difference in image and personality is really obvious. Even though they both often get the "Oh, isn't he the weird gay icon with odd hair" tag.

Conversation Piece Lyrics
Artist(Band):David Bowie

I took this walk to ease my mind
To find out what's gnawing at me
Wouldn't think to look at me,
that I've spent a lot of time in education
It all seems so long ago
I'm a thinker, not a talker
I've no-one to talk to, anyway

I can't see the road
for the rain in my eyes
Ahhh ...

I live above the grocers store,
owned by an Austrian
He often calls me down to eat
And he jokes about his broken English,
tries to be a friend to me
But for all my years of reading conversation,
I stand without a word to say

I can't see the bridge
for the rain in my eyes
Ahhh...

And the world is full of life
Full of folk who don't know me
And they walk in twos or threes or more
While the light that shines above the grocer's store
Investigates my face so rudely
And my essays lying scattered on the floor
Fulfill their needs just by being there
And my hands shake, my head hurts,
my voice sticks inside my throat
I'm invisible and dumb,
And no-one will recall me

And I can't see the water
for the tears in my eyes

I am a Ghost - I have the boot of that gig. What a great gig. The banter was hilarious and you can hear the lads shouting "I wanna shag yer wife David" as Iman was sitting in one of the boxes. Two hours - Yep top form but even better he played for three hours with the Reality gig in Dublin.

Can't beat the old Dublin wit! No wonder we produced Wilde, Joyce, Beckett etc etc ;)

The Reality gig was super, but prefer ye ancient Olympia..

Sure i like "Heathen" too good album but the 1980's did suck with his most terrible album ever "Tonight"....and i saw him many many times live he is a stunning performer and did almost never cancel a gig for illness or something ...well untill he became really ill of his heart...so i saw him perform the last time in Amsterdam and it's not true he is recording in Berlin...he is home in NYC relaxing with wife and kid....who can blame him ??? he have nothing to prove anymore he is a legend something Morrissey never will be....sorry i'm a big fan of Moz but if i talk to someone about him no ones knows him..........but everyone knows David Bowie...yep !!!

Totally agree,Brian.

A total GENIUS !

First saw him on The Serious Moonlight tour not knowing too much about him.
It was like an alien had landed!
The next day i started investing in his back catalogue.
Then went on too see him a few other times including his great performance at Live Aid at Wembley:Heroes was WOW!

At the moment,i love Buddha Of Suburbia especially "The Mysteries":it sounds so fragile that it's going to break at any point.

In fact the whole album is a great continuation of Low.

The first album I ever bought was Ziggy Stardust, then Aladdin Sane, etc. Bowie's influence on modern music is staggering, probably as important as Hendrix or anyone else. I only saw him live once on the Serious Moonlight Tour in 1983 at Milton Keynes bowl. It wasn't the best phase of his career, but it was unforgettable. The man is a genius.

I Am A Ghost - I would’ve loved to have been at that. Great venue and such a small one for Bowie too. I’m not sure was there a mad scramble for tickets for it as I know not everyone was too keen on what Bowie was doing at that time with Earthling. Personally I love that stuff and the set list was better than the Reality gigs (which was fantastic just too many slow numbers). You didn’t catch Tin Machine or 'hours...' in Dublin no? I’ve a few live Dublin gigs on CD etc. and quite honestly they’re the most hilarious in terms of the banter. A clip from Dublin Olympia:

Well said Anon X and that’s why it’s silly when people off hand dismiss his 90s output often while claiming to love Berlin era Bowie. I have found that they most often haven't heard of Buddha of Suburbia because they seem to have a mental block about abnything post-1980 Bowie and dismiss it without a listen. I usually end up having to make them a copy of that because as you say it sounds like a continuation. BOS has been reissued but was difficult to obtain for a while there unless you’re into the ol' interweb downloading ;) Dead Against It is my firm fave from that.

Maybe you’ve all heard it already but really if you like the instrumentals you check it out:

Ah glad you liked it. He's a top bloke alright.

Glad to hear someone else here likes the 90s output. 'hours...' was a million miles from the previous album Earthling in terms of sound and image. Much more sedate but yeah I'm fond of it too.

It's not quite the vid I was looking for. On my CD it's around taht part where you can hear the lads shouting about wanting to shag Iman. So reserved are Dublin crowds ;)

Crystal Japan is unspeakably beautiful isn't it?

Ah you're going 60s style, well pop on And I Say To Myself while you're at it (his first b-side under the name 'Bowie' folks. Some trivia for you there :D). I'm off to indulge in Earthling, how's that for a hedonistic Sunday! Ta-ra, nice talking, au revoir. You lot have great taste.

I think "Earthling" is a great album. "Reality" is great too, but as you say, the gigs didn't set the world on fire. "Outside" I cannot take to at all bar one or two tracks. But, I saw Morrissey on that tour :)

What tracks are they specifically? I love 'I'm Deranged' from that album. Also 'Thru These Architects Eyes' and 'Outside', but I haven't listened to it in full for ages. The baby grace stuff was a bit cringeful.

I got a refund when I discovered that Mozz pulled out of the Manchester show of that tour - still regret that now.

Tin Machine was indeed a bit 'ughy', but he was even more ughy just before that and I think it was a needed stepping stone to get back into form.

The three singles really , I suppose. I found the whole concept he was doing with this album pretentious, to be honest. And it is a pity you missed Morrissey on that tour because, despite all the problems, he was quite, quite wonderful. :)

Also, try Philip Glass's two Bowie based symphonies, they are superb.

I really enjoy 'The Deram Anthology' from 1966-68. The London Boys; When I Live My Dream; Sell Me a Coat; In the Heat of the Morning; She's Got Medals; Maid of Bond Street - really great tunes.

Also, an EP of his called 'I Dig Everything' from 1966, in particular, a tune called Can’t Help Thinking About Me, which always delivers. Love a lot of his stuff from this period.
