View Full Version : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Maverick February 22, 2009, 06:45 PM NC is really the only artist who comes close to Morrissey in terms of legend status.
He is an amazing singer / songwriter, author, actor, novelist & screenwriter.
And to top it all, he's just getting better with age - and not many can say that. His last 2 albums have been career highlights.
Any other NC fans on here?
Superhans February 22, 2009, 08:04 PM Absolute dross in my opinion.
Wozzer February 22, 2009, 08:13 PM The new album is very good, both musically and lyrically.
theneverplayedsymphony February 22, 2009, 08:25 PM I really dislike Dig! Lazarus Dig!, but everything else I really like!:D Easy to obsess over, I've been obsessed with Red Right Hand, Mercy Seat, Lucy, Henry Lee, Stagger Lee, O'Malley's Bar, The Carny, The Weeping Song!:guitar: Even God Is In The House!
Morning Star February 22, 2009, 08:34 PM Saw him live about a month ago. Very powerful.
Too bad Mick Harvey is leaving the Bad Seeds.
LegalTender February 22, 2009, 09:53 PM I got the Birthday Party's last album for Christmas. It's the only thing I've heard from Nick Cave, aside from Where The Wild Roses Grow. I like it.

Agreed.
lnathan February 23, 2009, 09:07 PM Yes, saw them at the Apollo last year. I really like the new album but in my opinion, although I like pretty much everything they've done, nothing comes close to the brilliance of No More Shall We Part. For some reason noone ever mentions this album when talking about Cave, it is like the forgotten album. To me it is perfection from start to finish.

I've got all his albums incl. Grinderman and went to see him about ten times or more. :guitar: Missed Blixa though the last time. :( One of my favourite albums is Murder Ballads. And the Ass Saw the Angel is one of the best novels ever written. :)
I am a Ghost February 23, 2009, 10:22 PM A quite extraordinary album...

It is. It's his most personal record - It is regarded by many as his most beautiful album. Many who don't like his work in general DO like The Boatman's Call. It's one of the most nakedly romantic, and desolate, records ever made. Funnily enough he doesn't like it too much himself like he said in several interviews:
Was he aware at the time...? "That I was doing the big confessional record? No, no. When I was making half that record I was furious because certain things had happened in my love life that seriously pissed me off. And some of those songs came straight out of that." Does it embarrass him now? "I don't regret making it but, yeah, it does a bit, because the songs are of a moment when you felt a certain way. When you don't any more, you just think, 'Fuck - please!' " :D
Frank's Wild Years February 23, 2009, 11:05 PM I like Nick Cave a great deal, one of my all-time top five. But I cannot put anyone above Tom Waits.

"Black Hair" is one of the most extraordinary songs I have ever heard. Just his voice, a bass organ and a piano accordion. But the whole collection is superb.
Have you heard the alternate "Boatman's Call"?

Call Of The Caveman? Unfortunately not, but it's on my wantlist. :thumb:
I am a Ghost February 23, 2009, 11:29 PM Amongst other things, "Black Hair" is done with piano. Rather good.
Black_Eyed_Sioux February 24, 2009, 01:44 AM I think Nick Cave surpasses Morrissey in his greatness (I know that's blasphemy to some in these here parts :p) He's a true renaissance man

If it's the same version that's on the B-sides and rarities collection, I know that version of Black Hair. Very nice. :)
I 've often been wondering whether NC and Morrissey appreciate each other's work. That would be my first question if I was lucky enough to interview them. Something inside me says they don't though.

The info sticker on the "Boatmans Call" Promo says......
"Cave and the Bad Seeds extend thier search for faith both on a personal and spiritual level. The result is a series of songs that are detailed but never cumbersome.
He measures his own spirituality against that of Christ. The album contains many biblical rferences that reflect Cave's deep seated fondness wth the new testament.
Unlike with ' Murder Ballards', 'The Boatmans Call' switches its attention to the virtues of love and faith"
Guess that sums it up ha ha

I very much doubt it. I don't think Moz appreciates misogynist, junkie, Bible~bothering, pretentious goths. Don't care much for them myself ;)
I can just imagine what Mr.Cave thinks of Morrissey ~ silly pom poof pop star!

I have a feeling I've said this before (but since Kewpie's not here, I'll probably repeat myself).
I loved Nick Cave in the '80s. I saw him touring either From Her to Eternity or The Firstborn is Dead. If you ask me, it doesn't get any better than the latter. He was brilliant and original, and his band was superb (Blixa Bargeld is one of my musical heroes). Nick's a great artist, and I've always had the utmost respect for his accomplishments.
However, I just can't seem to connect with his music anymore. He's maintained an incredibly high standard all these years, but I've listened to the new stuff, and it leaves me cold. I don't know why.
Nick deserves every bit of the adulation he receives - he's an indie god. I much prefer Morrissey, for some reason.
It would be an interesting smackdown: Moz v. Cave.
Irish Budd February 24, 2009, 09:20 PM I was lucky enough to see him live last Sepetember in the Warfield in San Fransisco. He was amazing live.Great setlist, great venue, great performance.
Great night all round.

Tell the truth now, it's the mustache right ?
If Moz decided to adopt the look of a balding Mexican pimp from 1973 you'd probably ditch him too ? :D
Mr.Cave may be an indie god to some. Moz is just God. :thumb:

wasnt it you who saw him in the 80 ties..
you did wrote a short review of that concert here and if my memory serves me wellmentioned that was the first time you were afraid at a concert, right?
do tell a bit more would love to hear it...
i as late born saw neubauten first at their anniversary concert where they played lots of old stuff which the normally dont do in that amount (der tod ist ein dandy, letztes biest im himmel, ich bins and many many more)amazing seltlist
and the whole thing totally blow me away, there is nothing like them..amazing what things you can use to make music
maybe i should start a thread about them..there are at least 2 other persons here on this forum who are fans, both male though....the amount of males in the audience is def bigger....
do like nick and his music a lot but even though i dig his talent in songwriting, the music, his voice I cant listen too long. One album , yes,but not a couple of them at once and not everyday....
and he is quite a lot more funny as people giving him credit for...
oh and he did what morrissey would like to do: beat up a nme journalist once !
a great book i have among others of him
http://www.amazon.com/Life-Music-Cave-Illustrated-Biography/dp/3931126277
i will post some pictures from that book....
about the inquiry of moz liking nick or not questioned earlier here by some of you:
i can remember a youtube video where a journo name nick cave as important and influental and named "are you the one that Ive been waiting for" but morrissey looks unimpressed about the journo naming nick..cant find it anymore
CharlieFairhead February 25, 2009, 04:24 PM I'd love a 'Morrissey and the bad seeds' album.
You can but dream.

To be fair, i might just be pushed to agree with you there - i think Mozzer is more accessable at any given time, but NC is perhaps the more accomplished artist.
In all round talent, he's certainly above Morrissey.
I've never seen Cave live, i've seen Morrissey, so if i had the choice between the 2, i'd opt for Cave.

With all due, IMO, etc, this is bollocks.
Nick Cave appears to be a 'greater artist' cos he wears black, took smack, hates women and goes on about god. Tick, tick, tick on every cliche box for the sixth-former idea of an 'artist'. What is this ? The 50s ?!
This kind of attitude is why British public shoolboy music journalists cream themselves with each new Nick 'meisterwork', while dismissing each new Moz album as silly butty pop. But it is also why, 30 years hence, Morrissey will be seen as the greater artist. :squiffy:
Sorry, but I can't stand Nick Cave. Maybes I should just avoid this thread then....
saying that, I do cry every time I hear 'Into My Arms', but please don't tell anyone.
Pokey February 28, 2009, 06:55 PM Overall I'm a much bigger Morrissey fan than Nick Cave, although I do love Nick. One thing I really have noticed is that whilst I've loved the last few Moz album, lyrically they just haven't been as strong as they used to be in his earlier solo/smiths days ... he pulls out some gems still, but unlike previous albums which was just start to finish lyrical genius. Nick Cave however is still lyrically at the top of his game I think, his last couple of albums has had some of the best stuff he's written on it IMO. I think in that sense at least he pips Moz in these last few years.

Even if Nick shaved, however, it would still be over between us.

You have a good memory. That show was the closest that I have ever come to dying/having my face burned off at a club; it was the best thing ever. If you start that Neubauten thread, I'll dredge the memory up again (unless some mod can unearth the original...).

I'm glad you enjoyed them. Back in those lawless days, Einsturzende Neubauten got away with a level of danger/artistry that put most other bands to shame. Blixa was just adorable in his leather and bondage. :flamethrow: :yum:

Johnny April 13, 2009, 02:11 PM He is a brilliant artist .In all honesty his body of work probably surpasses Morrissey's.
Strangely enough,by his standards, I thought Dig Lazarus Dig was weak by his standards

Agreed, except for the last paragraph - I don't think his last albums have been very good at all, with Grinderman ranking as a downright embarassment. No more shall we part was the last really good one, in my opinion. Personally I fancy Your Funeral My Trial as his best ever, but opinion varies of course.
cheers
sistasheila July 3, 2009, 04:10 PM i ve read a review from someone who attended the hurricane festival and it say he has two drummers ( i dont know if they were there for the whole show or just for a few songs though)
maybe she mistaken the percussionist for the 2nd drummer
if there is a ever a nick cave frink thread this pic down ther ewould be a great fitting:p
Kewpie September 4, 2009, 10:08 PM Nick Cave will be on BBC 2 Newsnight Review tonight.
His second novel 'The Death of Bunny Munro' is featured.
Thank goodness, he finally shaved really awful mustache. :D
Hopefully Jarvis will follow him soon.
Have-A-Go Merchant September 5, 2009, 10:41 PM I love NC&TBS. As a band they beat Mozzer's troupe hands down. I first saw Nick Cave just after he had disbanded the fantastic blistering Birthday Party. He had a new band called Nick Cave & The Cavemen. They were wonderful but it was obvious they were only the beginning of something to come. He then changed the bands name to The Bad Seeds and they grew to be one of the finest bands around.
I've just ordered Nicks new book in it's 7CD set audiobook version. He has composed some music to accompany his reading of the full novel based on the south coast of England around Brighton where I live. (Nick lives here too). I'm very keen to see what local places he includes.
Kewpie September 7, 2009, 12:28 PM 'The Death of Bunny Munro' promo continues.
Nick will be on BBC London Radio Robert Elms show at 14:30.

joe frady September 7, 2009, 12:35 PM 'Bunny' not going down too well so far. Accusations of misogyny you say? Shirley not!
Nick Cave being interviewed by Robert Elms? Pseud's corner awaits! ;)

Oh? What's Mick going to be up to?
I did like his albums of Serge Gainsbourg music -- thought they were very well done.
On a note about Blixa, when are we going to get a new Neubauten album? :blushing:
sistasheila September 7, 2009, 03:14 PM Oh?
On a note about Blixa, when are we going to get a new Neubauten album? :blushing:
hmm not to be too sure about that....beside an official , over a record company released album, the whole supporter projects is over too..they were actually the first, long before the media attention concentrated on radiohead, to go other ways distributing albums online i.e. they produced an album from the money fans were paying them (not that much but enough to make a record and therefore fans got acess to the band in return (watched their rehearsels and actual recordings via camera , got exclusive supporterconcerts, where at one they actually a were allowed to play with he band,e-chat with the bands, got acess at official concerts backstage and over all got really close with the band) the records they made during the supporter projects were only distributed via their supporters
i think they had 3 or 4 supporter albums by now ..im not the fan i was anymore(from 98-2005) did go back to casual fan...and a record can never ever show their genius and power they are live..and live...they are -unique-..to say the least...and blows ones away.
they wont tour the US unfortuntaly mccrickson as its too expensive (their live equipment needs to be shipped as its very heavy and big) they did so in the past but a statement from the band showed it isnt possible anymore
from an article(wiki) about the suporter project:
it was released without the backing of a record label, relying instead upon fan ("supporter") participation. It was a popular experiment that would later lead to other exclusive releases for supporters.
About 2,000 supporters signed up at the band's website to support what became Phase I by paying US$35/€35 to participate in the experience and receive the results. Numerous sessions of the recording and creating of the album were transmitted to the community of supporters via the internet, as streaming videos.
well...i would love to see them live again somewhere in europe but i dont hold my breath for a new record actually..since blixa has became a father last year and he is fully occupied with theatre and his(worth seeing) performance/speech things.well...
mcrickson September 7, 2009, 03:26 PM :(
I never got a chance to see Neubauten :blushing: :tears:
sistasheila September 7, 2009, 03:31 PM :(
I never got a chance to see Neubauten :blushing: :tears:
well maybe they surprise us with a new album but i have a gut feeling it either does not happen or if it indeed will happen then in the far future:tears:as for seeing them live what about taking/saving money aside from your job and flying over to europe for a few days ans seeing a concert...hostels arent expensive...and theyre cheap flights out there.
otherwise his performance /speech where he only needs a microphone and some effect pedals always brings him around the world incl america
still ill life September 7, 2009, 07:52 PM Boys next door - "Shiver"
