Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries, I love her voice, great song writer as well.

Pink, I always get the feeling that hiding behind the attitude is a very vunerable soul.

Annie Lennox, amazing vocal abilities, argueably the best female voice of the 80's.

Neko Case, a youngish woman from Virginia, since based in Chicago. Her voice is unbelievably beautiful and haunting - it has the clarion quality of Patsy Cline, with a kind of post-modern existential toughness. I can't understand why she's not a superstar - she's a fine songwriter and quite good looking too.

Recommended songs: "Hold On, Hold On" "Star Witness" "If You Knew What I Know" :guitar:

Billie Holiday.
Ella Fitzgerald for her round, jolly, relaxed tones.
Edith Piaf for her gutteral passion.
Sarah Vaughan for being not-too-smooth.
Susannah McCorkle for being a passionate scholar of early American popular song, and a damn fine singer.
Doris Day for being so underrated, simply because she was boringly blonde and too pretty to get full credit for her talents.
Bjork for using every sound her voice could make, growls and squeaks and grunts as well as the more usual sounds (just like Morrissey.)
Marnie Nixon, for doing all the other girls' work for them.
I really like Harriet (Wheeler?) from The Sundays. I just do. There is a Ting Tings song that sounds like the child of a Sundays song (the one with the roundabouts and traffic lights, you know the one.)

Those spring easily to mind. Actually, I mostly prefer male singers, for some reason. Girls make me jealous, not that I could ever compete in that arena. I sing like a choir girl, I have a way of making everything sound like a show tune. In a junior high school production.

Edited to add: I forgot Nina Simone. No reason needed.

Indeed she does.

I was remiss not to mention Juliana Hatfield: her album "How to Walk Away," which came out in August, is one of the year's best - deliciously melodic and moving all the way through. Her voice, writing and guitar gifts have matured wonderfully.

Oh, and to whoever mentioned Karen Carpenter: yes. Her voice is so haunting. My mum used to play The Carpenters when I was a child and for some reason I can't hear one of their songs now without a surge of sadness overcoming me, which is really strange. Her voice was amazing.
