I will be running the London Marathon on Sunday 26th April.

I hope to complete the 26 miles in under 4 hours (yeah right!) but the main point of running will be to raise money for Salford Lads Club

I would like to get a 100 Morrissey fans to sponsor me a tenner each!

You can donate your £10 at www.justgiving.com/boywithastitchladsclub

Please don't hesitate to contact me (mark@boywithastitch.com) if you have any questions or any abuse, or even better please stick it on the site for everyone to enjoy!

Regards

Mark

As many of you will know, and many more won't, I will be running the London Marathon on Sunday 26th April.

I hope to complete the 26 miles in under 4 hours (yeah right!) but the main point of running will be to raise money for two important charities. I want to try and raise at least £1,000 for the Salford Lads Club (the other being the Samaritans) I know you are right in the middle of buying presents for your nearest and dearest so I know sponsoring me is the last thing on the list but I just wanted really to let you know about my blog - The Boy With A Stitch In His Side - so you can keep an eye on how it's going and hopefully have a laugh at my expense. Find it here - www.boywithastitch.com

All the details you need to know on how to sponsor me are on there (I would rather have sponsorship than presents - nudge, nudge, wink, wink) and I will add information about how it's going over the next four months, so please keep checking back and please forward the link on to anyone who might be interested. Ideally it would be nice if lot's of people to sponsor me a little, 50p/£1 a mile.

Please don't hesitate to contact me (mark@boywithastitch.com) if you have any questions or any abuse, or even better please stick it on the site for everyone to enjoy!

Regards

Mark

Well done, Virg! I will throw a few bob your way.
This tired old man started running for the first time in January this year and I do 6-10k almost daily now, so I have no doubt you will triumph in the marathon!
Good result yesterday, btw.
Also, do you have liquor with your pie and mash? It's scary stuff, but I ate it once before going to a game. And drank a lot of the other kind afterwards ;)

I do - pints of the stuff! One of the good things about the East End is we still have plenty of Pie'n'Mash shops left.

Thanks for your encouragement, I would really like to do it in under four hours.

Great Result Yesterday Irons! Irons!

This has dropped to the second page already? Clearly not enough people know you well enough to know that you running any distance is truly laughable.

Personally I think that Marco Boogers stands more of a chance finishing.

Nevertheless, I will of course donate my hard earned too.

People know me - it's the fact they don't like me that is the issue. Good call on Marco - legend.

One question for everyone, what Morrissey/Smiths songs do you think would be suitable for running too?? Ideally something uptempo as running to Asleep is not getting me going - what are your thoughts??

Hello Everyone

Hope you're well, enjoying building snowpeople and keeping warm.

Unfortunately a touch of Man Flu and the sudden seasonal weather has slowed up training but all is going well. I'm comfortably running 7.5 miles in 50 minutes so that is where I would want to be at this point in my training, however the challenge now will be to maintain that pace over a distance.

My first competitive race of the training programme will take place on Saturday 14th February at the London 10K Valentine's Love Run in Battersea Park. Though this is not a great distance it will be good to get a race under my belt and it will only be a month until the Silverstone Half Marathon on March 15th.

In addition to the hard work that goes into training, an equal amount has to go into fundraising and this is where you can help! I understand that many people are tightening their belts (sorry for all the belt analogies) so it would be good to get as many people as possible to sponsor me 50p/£1 a mile. I wouldn't say no to more but I really want everyone to feel like they can contribute. I want to raise as much as possible for the Salford Lads Club :)

To sponsor me couldn't be simpler, simply click the link below

www.justgiving.com/boywithastitchladsclub

Please email me once you have done so I can add your name to the blog, I trust people keep up to date via the website www.boywithastitch.com please visit regularly and you can show your support by visiting my facebook group, http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=114878275219&ref=ts

Please keep in touch, I'm grateful for all the support I've received and if you fancy a run, then give me a bell ;)

Best Wishes!

On Saturday I did the Love 10kin Battersea Park, it took 47.33 mins to run the 10k (a marathon is 43k, 26.2 miles) so all going well in the build up to the London Marathon on 26th April.

Thought I would share a couple of pictures.

In fact if I could get 100 soloers to sponsor me just a tenner ($14.50) then it will be easy to raise £1000 for the lads club, http://www.justgiving.com/boywithastitchladsclub

Cheers everyone!!

I have only managed to raise £50 for the lads club so far, not great!!

I won't give up easy!! :p

With just a week to go to the Silverstone ‘alf marathon training is going really well. I plan on running the distance of the race today (Monday) and again on Thursday. Leaving Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for light sessions.

It’s said that to work out your full marathon time then you need to double your half marathon time and add twenty minutes, so I guess I’m aiming for something between 1:30 - 1:45 next Sunday. It is an honest surface as it used for the F1 so I hope to be able to achieve a good time - fingers crossed.

Due to my hard work I treated myself to Saturday off and went campaigning with my excellent local MP, Jim Fitzpatrick, oh and he is also a big West ‘am fan!!

http://boywithastitch.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/sdc10913.jpg?w=225&h=300

Thanks again for all the sponsorship and please keep it coming - please remember no amount is too small. We have rasied only £75 for the lads club so far :tears: :tears: :tears: but you can change that, just donate a tenner at www.justgiving.com/boywithastitchladsclub

On Sunday I took part in my first ever long distance race of not only of this training programme but pretty much, well, erm, ever. It was at Silverstone F1 racetrack in Northamptonshire.

I thought the track would be flat but it was surprisingly hilly, not simply around the track but also the service roads and even the car park. The start of the race was delayed 15 minutes, which is frustrating as you start your preparation 30 minutes before you start, so you are left in limbo for 15 minutes.

Once off I managed to keep a steady pace accept between miles 2 and 3 where I had to tie my laces (I knew I had forgotten something) and had to take a Gypsies (it's cockney rhyming slang) but managed to make up the time. I got across at a clock time 01:36:45 but forgot to stop my personal watch. Wearing the famous (and lets face it - beautiful) Claret and Blue meant I had a few cheers on the way round as well as plenty of boos! :)Feeling good I enjoyed my 78 bottles of water at the finish;)

Please note that the old fella - did indeed - overtake me

My official time was 01:35:04, the the extra four seconds really hunts me. But I guess I'm pleased with the run and how I felt after, able to run, row and swim on Monday.

Thanks to everyone who sent me good luck messages before hand, I'm really looking forward to April 26th now.

Please keep in touch and please keep the sponsorship coming, it's nice to read and remember your comments when I'm out running :thumb:, www.justgiving.com/boywithastitchladsclub

congrats on a good time.
your training is definitely going better than mine.
I've never run further than 9 miles before, and I've had a knee injury for 18 months.
however, my physio still reckons I should give it a go!

I think I put something like 3-3.15. When I entered 18 months ago, I was running 37 minute 10k’s so was on good form.
However, I’ve been injured since then and put on a stone! Hardly done any training (9 miles is my furthest).
If I can get up to 13 or maybe 15 without aggravating the injury, will give the marathon a go as I’ve never done one before and can’t defer my place another year.
Don’t know what time I’d finish in-sub 4 if I’m lucky. Won’t be running at your pace though unless you have a very bad day!

I'm sure now your minds are wondering towards how many Easter Eggs you are going to be able to consume over the long weekend but spare a moment to think of the poor soles (well me mainly) who will have to forgo the pleasure of chocolate for the greater good of running 26 miles for charity.

Training is going well with this week being my last full week before I start warming down, I've covered nearly 900 miles in training so far and am looking forward to the challenge of April 26th, however if I'm honest the nervous and doubts are starting to creep in.

I'm sure with the diet of hot cross buns and the mountains of chocolate (not forgetting the fact it's Tottenham away on Saturday) will mean you have plenty on your mind, but if you can spare a moment to sponsor me I would really appreciate it - even if it's only the cost of a Cream Egg, because every penny counts!

Happy Easter

I leave Greenwich Park at 9:45am and don't want to tempt fate by saying where I will be at which time but if you let me know where you are going to stand I will let you know (roughly) what time I hope to be there. My number is 43702 please do come and give me a cheer is possible, It makes a real difference, and if you can wear some claret and blue (or a Morrissey t-shirt) for some reason my eyes are really drawn to that combination of colours and I will have a better chance of spotting you. A really good guide to the day is available here -

If you are coming down and not sure where to stand can I recommend the excellent Mint pub in East Smithfields, it's at the halfway mark and you can see the runners twice. They also have a fantastic band playing so if you get bored of watching people run.......

Thank you ever so much for all your support!

Take Care

Mark

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions

Hello Everyone

First and foremost I would like to thank everyone who has emailed, called and texted support. It really nice to get so much support. A bigger thank you to those who made the journey to the streets of London on Sunday to show their support, especially those who donned Morrissey t-shirts! Thank you. No Cowshed or KitKatMoz - Poor - But the biggest thank you to those who have sponsored me, I haven't made added it up yet but I'm still only just over half way from my £1000 target for the lads club - and it is for the charity that I sit typing this with sore legs.

I still can't believe the heat on the day - it was difficult to run in and would have been impossible to prepare for - after all most of my training has taken place in the dark!

I will put a more fuller account of the day with pictures etc on the blog in the next couple of days (and on this thred) but I just wanted to write a thank you and if you still haven't donated and wish to do so the just giving site is still up and running (unlike me) www.justgiving.com/boywithastitchladsclub

My official time was - 3:21:48

I finished 2959th which sounds bad, but it was out of 35,800 people so in the top 10% I finished 2662th out of the men and 1396th in my age group (which included the winner Sammy Wanjiru)

My full results can be found here - http://results-2009.london-marathon.co.uk/index.php?lastname=walker&firstname=mark&club=&gender=&nation=&event_id=MAS&position=&split=FINISHNET&Submit=show+results+%3E%3E&a=d&o=s&start_no=43702&ostart_no=43702

Thank you again for your support.

Hey Mark,
Congrats on a great run. That's a fantastic time.
I managed to get round but it was a real struggle and quite a lot of walking in the second half (as expected).
I now know why 5 weeks is generally not considered to be a long enough marathon training period!
I finished in a little under 4 hours which I'm happy with - just hope I haven't done any permanent damage to legs, hips, knees, feet etc.
Hope you are currently in less pain than me!

You should be proud - with limited training!

I got my carbo gels wrong. I'm not feeling too bad little DOMS but going for a swim this evening.
