View Full Version : LILY ALLEN: The most genuinely interesting pop act in the charts?

And bare in mind I'm talking about POP acts, not experimental indie bands dwindling in the low 90s.

She's releasing pop songs that are both different, yet comfortable and some of the funniest lyrics that I've heard (check out 'Friday Night' on her last album).
She's also cracking in interviews, very naturally funny, not afraid to speak her mind and get herself in trouble.
All in all, quite annoying that she's grouped in with 'the London set' when she's so, so much more talented than most of the rest of them.

The only other acts to come close are Girls Aloud (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=FS9w-5GYf2Q) (when they're on form) or Alesha Dixon (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ugmxydkWgVI)

Her new single: 'The Fear' (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vSs94aGi9u4)

yeah, I quite like Lily Allen, and I think she's a bit underrated. Her new song is great, too.

Not at all, ignore 'Smile' which was a really, really dreadful song - but since then every single, and many on the album have been pretty damn great.

Definitely not, but more interesting than some. Than most?

Yeah, I can't think of any proper 'pop' acts as good as her. In fact I can only think of Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Alesha Dixon and Katy Perry as anyone who is worth taking a passing interest in.

she's an interesting lady, her songs are very good, musically (although they rely heavily on sampling other people's melodies) but her mockney cockney thing is just horrible.
virtually every song has a lyric that really makes you cringe;
"dir(t)y, gro(tt)y magazines, si(tt)ing with a slapper looking dapper."
hearing a wealthy, upper middle-class woman from a very privileged background (think she went to the bloody awful Brits school) with tons of showbiz connections dropping her tees and aitches for mockney cockney cred is pretty nauseating.

Pretty sure Allen didn't even go there.

These people did though:

Amy Winehouse
Leona Lewis
Kate Nash
Katie Melua
Lynden David Hall
Imogen Heap
Adele
Luke Pritchard of The Kooks
Dan Gillespie Sells and Richard Jones of The Feeling
Dane Bowers and Wayne Williams from Another Level
Paul Godfrey of Morcheeba
Andrez Harriott from Damage
Floetry
The Pangs
Ace and Vis

One mate that went there is currently on the Talk To Frank advert, the scene in the club "A lot of people do it Pablo" also the Big Mac advert and some British 'Urban' films.

Back to the topic in hand though, yes I like Lily Allen and the new tune. As a fan of Drum and Bass, I was really impressed with the work DnB producers Future Cut did on half of 'Alright, Still' (the half that Ronson didn't do) Good album. Not going to make assumptions on how qualified she is to talk about the subject matters in her songs, I don't really care.

She also managed to make me laugh out loud a number of times, have me dance along to songs I'd never heard before and be clever enough to end the set with a song that's a cover she got told off for doing by an artist she's slagged off in the past.

Morrissey has appeared in all sorts of affected outfits in the past, dressing up doesn't make you less interesting ;)

Lily Allen's songs are not really to my taste, but I like her singing voice and I do think she is more interesting than almost any other pop acts at the moment. I think she's honest and genuine and tells it like it is, and while Morrissey probably wouldn't approve, she's not scared about smearing her lovely career, and seems quite intelligent to boot. :thumb:

But, by the same token, if the chart was made up purely of Morrissey or 'credible' indie stuff it'd be pretty boring as well.

I adore pop music, not because it changes my life, or even that it will always be with me, but because it is a shared experience in a club or a mutual conversational entry point with new groups of people.
Dancing along to the absolutely cynical 'Jai Ho!' by the Pussycat Dolls this weekend, an entire group of strangers were completely happy to dance around in a mock-Bollywood fashion, singing - for the most part, poorly- at the top of their voices. Pretty amazing.
That song will probably be forgotten by the end of the year, but it was fucking brilliant for that three minutes.

To dismiss pop music because it seems throw-away is ridiculous. Things like X-Factor are easy targets and terrible for music because they present a disproportinate view of one particular artist, and really ruin the numbers for everyone else, but to look at the longer effect is different (the difference between Leona Lewis and Eoghan Quigg, for instance).
Chris Lowe recently spoke about pop music (and, for the life of me I can't find the interview but I'm trying) and saying how he feels writing a successful Pop song is much more difficult than writing just any old song, and I'd agree.
Lady Gaga and Perry have actually written most of their own material, and before their recording debuts wrote for other pop acts and that is not an easy thing.
To appeal to as wide of a group as possible, while still retaining something they all like is something not to be scoffed at.

And of course you're going to get some absolute rubbish, but don't write something off as 'crap' because it's popular. Unless you're an utterly dull snob.

Who said I didn't like pop music? I'm the first one to jump on a karaoke stage and sing Madonna, Britney, Christina Aguilera, Kelis, and the Pussycat Dolls.
I have EVERY right to not like certain artists. On my list are those three. You don't know me at all, but look at lenghts you went just to prove you could write some paragraphs! It's ridiculous.

You wrote so much about such a freaking little sentence of mine, which only showed my opinion about three artists whose music I don't like at all, going through amazing references when I didn't even say I didn't like pop music, that you should probably consider being a snob yourself.

Fair enough I picked on the wrong sentence, it was more an angry reaction to the other previous comments combined with yours. And in (some, not much, but some - at least give me that :p) fairness to me, you did just dismiss three of the biggest pop artists in the charts at the moment and made no balanced mention of those you do like.
You're right that I don't know anything about you, but I didn't have more than three short sentences to go on, a constant problem in the online debate/bitch-fight community.

I'd stand by everything I said though, just perhaps not the person who I aimed it at.

Then why did you bitch-fight with me to start with? I dismiss them because I don't like them. It's not like I haven't heard plenty by them (and not just the hits). I'm a person that tries her best to know what she's talking about, so I educate myself with everything I don't know if I like or don't so that I can like it or not with a fair reason. I didn't mention those I liked because this was and still is a thread about Lily Allen, then I remembered the Gaga hate around here, in which I was defending her persona and style, and added Katy Perry to the equation - just because her name pops out. And don't think I don't sing Katy's "Hot & Cold" when I feel like it. I just don't think she'll all that great. Lily Allen, on the other hand, is absolutely painful to my ears. We all have things we don't function well with, for me, it's Lily Allen.

I picked your comment because it contained three pop artists that I knew I could put up a decent argument for and you'd dismissed them, in a thread that contained a lot of dismissive comments. Simple as that.
It was not a personal attack on your character, your life or your musical taste. It was a response to three sentences in a thread. Nothing more. I wasn't picking a fight, I was picking up on a comment.

If you're not looking for opinions maybe it's best not to post your comments in a public discussion then, eh? Or at the very least don't be surprised when you present one point of view and get picked up on it - even if that view is not reflective of your total feelings on the subject.

Now, I do not wish to be unpleasant on a site like this. I think it is the height of childishness, not to mention boring for everyone else, to bicker about something as stupid as this, especially when both parties have explained their points of view and reasonings - I explained why I said what I said, why I chose your comment to reply to AND I have apologised. Interesting comments. My main problem, though, with this discussion is that there isn't really any genuine musical difference between pop music and indie music. 'Indie' is the most meaningless musical genre ever invented. All it really means is pop music marketed to self-consciously 'cool' people.
Rock music, heavy metal, funk, blues, reggae etc are all pretty distinctive types of music, generally. But indie is not.
Most indie music is based around a standard 'pop' structure; verse, bridge, chorus, middle eight etc with the same blend of instruments (drums, guitar, bass, keyboard, maybe string/brass sections etc).
Morrissey often uses the phrase 'pop music' himself to describe the music he loves and the music he makes.

the difference has nothing to do with instruments or song structure. its called "pop" b/c its POPular. its called "indie" b/c it's derived from "independent" as most independent music isnt as popular as well...pop music. there could be a blues "indie" band or a blues "pop" band.

at least this is how I've always seen it, generally.

I see Worm explaining this so much better.

I like Lily Allen. I find her quite an interesting character who also happens to be very attractive and sexy to boot. The difference is, her songs appear to be based on some form of experience which riaises her credibility above the Girls Aloud et al of this world.
It was quite funny to see Kate Nash's attempt at copying Lily's style and failing miserably. Where is she now, anyways?
I have both of Lily's albums and find them quite entertaining. Just my opinion.

From her song "Shame For You":

"Oh my gosh you must be joking me
if you think that you'll be poking me"

Gold star, Lily, gold star.

I love her. I saw her in March, she was really good live and did a good cover of Womaniser!
