Hello,
I live in Belgium and I'm going on a mini cruise from Zeebrugge to Hull to celebrate my birthday next month. My wife and two teenagers will join me. We'll only be in Hull for 1 day and there'll be plenty of food on the ferry. I know some people from Hull are forum members. Can anyone suggest a pub in the town centre to have something to eat during the day?

Can't remember when I last sat down for a meal in Hull city centre - these days, the foodie district is a short bus ride away on Princess Avenue. However, if you want a proper old English pub atmosphere, you could hit the Old Town and try the Black Boy on High Street or the White Harte on Silver Street.

Here's the Harte being featured on a ghostie programme:

And the Black Boy is a ghostie pub, too. :)

Have fun! :D

EDIT: PS: And yes, people, those are Hull accents!

I've got a short memory, too; I knew I'd been asked about Hull before, but hadn't recalled who had asked me. Is this your second trip, then, or did the first one not come off?

PS: There's a good deli called Herbie's in the Carr Lane foyer of the Princes Key shopping centre. If it's good weather, grab a nice fat sarnie from there and eat it in Victora Square (on the steps of the statute, beneath which are some very beautiful public toilets, should nature call), or amongst the fishponds and wacky sculptures in Queens Gardens, beneath the gaze of William Wilberforce.... or you can even sit on the excavated foundations of the old city walls. Ferens art gallery used to have a decent caff but I don't know what it's like these days.

Oh, and beware the alarmingly huge public television set. WTF? Who on earth thought that was a good idea?

I love the way you've refered it as a "caff" great!

There is some really nice places to dine in Hull, Hitchcocks vegetarian resturant in the old town is nice, The Lamp also near Beverley Road is a nice quiet pub which sells really good quality food.

Is Cave Street chippy still good? I mean, once you've walked as far as the Lamp, you might as well have haddock or patty and chips and a bag of scraps and eat it in Pearsons Park. :D

I moved out into the sticks in the late 80s and wouldn't want to live in a city now - mind you, I was living on Folkestone St so....:D I definitely appreciate the place more as a visitor than I did as a resident. And the place has improved a lot since then.

We used to do Pier Luigis quite a lot but I understand that's gone down the pan a bit. Cosa Nostra on Bev Rd were the yummiest pizzas ever! :horny:

Well I live in Hedon, but I commute to town pretty much every weekday for college, Ah the ol' 77/76 bus!

I know what you mean about coming back to Hull when you've not been there for a while, I went to France this year and when I came back I really missed it, just seeing stuff like the Smith and Nephew factory and the Clarence Flour Mills just little things you don't see anywhere else.

There is also a great little pizza place as well on the italian stall in Hepworth Arcade, down on Whitefriargate, the fella who works there as well is a right laugh.

It's great in Hull. I got potted orchids for £2 each at the knock-off fruit and veg stall on Holderness Road. The ladies who work in Boyes were wearing witch costumes and getting all animated about the sleet. And a scary-looking tattoed-skulled skinhead opened the door for me on the way out of the shop. :)

Hull has the loveliest places to pee you have ever seen. In the summer, these beauteous bogs are festooned, indoors and out, with hanging baskets of flowers.

Gentlemen who would rather not pee from beneath Victoria's throne, can go and do their business beneath King Billy instead. There's a joke about Golden Showers in there but I'd best leave that be.

History time: Hull invented William Wilberforce who led the fight for abolition of slavery. And we liked him so much we stuck his statue on a giant column, with a lovely view over the Victoria Square toilets. Then in the 1930's he was getting in the way of the trams, so they stuck him down the bottom of the QG, from where he can peer into the police station and bored students on the upper floors of the 'tech can stare at the back of his head.

Note: I once waded, drunk, in the pond in front of the column. :o

The Cat's Mother

History Lesson 2: Hull also invented Mick Ronson, whose appearance one night on the front page of the Hull Daily Mail, elicited from my mother the response: "Oh, what a terribly common-looking girl!"

The Mick Ronson Memorial Stage in Queen's Gardens is a rather unfortunate affair; a bit of hard standing in front of the tacky 1960's refreshments kiosk, some poles and sometimes a tarpaulin. The Hull planners really must have had a "Crap Town" moment when they had that idea. What's wrong with a column or a nice public loo to honour you, eh?

I don't know if Amy had been on the sauce when she came a cropper over the Serpentine, but she was said to be carrying a mystery passenger (body never recovered) at the time.

Now, time for a peek into the seedier side of our fair city. Here we are at the Earl de Grey, a stone's throw from where we'll be queueing up to see the Mozzer in May. This innocuous-looking drinking-hole, a listed building with beautiful green tile-work, was for two centuries Hull's most notorious red-light pub. It had two famously talkative parrots, one of whom was deliberately murdered to stop it spilling the beans on a robbery! I only went in there once and ended up in the loo calming a prostitute who had accidentally trodden on a punter's dog's tail and been bitten for her trouble.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v451/eatenbyweasels/misc/earldegr.jpg

Alas, the Earl is now boarded-up and faces an uncertain future. As do the hookers who have been cleared off the nearby streets in the name of retail development.

Really I don't like it when they disrespect old pubs. I have a mate in Manchester who hates that as well. I think people should ask Morrissey to donate money. Not necessarily to the hookers directly, more like, to an association that preserves them. (the pubs).

...or if that's full, there's a Campanile only a little further away.
http://www.hotelscombined.com/Hotel/Campanile_Hotel_Hull.htm

EDIT: Forgot the new Express by Holiday Inn. That's nice and close. And handy for Tesco:
http://www.hiexpress.co.uk/h/d/ex/925/en/hd/huyuk?crUrl=/h/d/ex/925/en/hotelsearchresults&rpb=hotel&_requestid=71832

Also the Holiday Inn "proper" at the Marina. Again, very convenient:
http://www.hiexpress.co.uk/h/d/hi/925/en/hotel/huynh?rpb=hotel&crUrl=/h/d/ex/925/en/hotelsearchresults

All spare beds at my house are already booked. (I'd say "bring a tent and camp in the garden" but come May, the lawn might be in bits due to some planned re-designing.)

I know but it has nothing to do with the Original HULL thread. It does my head in when stuff gets merged.

Think of buying a new television set? Well, go to the shop, pick up your purchase and while you think "Ooh, LCD is so much lighter and less bulky than cathode-ray! ", think also of Hull. Because the LCD technology behind your lovely new box originated at the University of Hull Swish Telly Laboratory. Enjoy! :)

"Twaggin' off. You did it first in Hull." :)

Can you still get those "Hull - A Taste of Paradise" T-shirts from under the City Hall? I have a sudden yearning to wear one to the Ice Arena gig.

EDIT! Yes! You can still get them, but I'm too tight to pay out the £12.50.

I know what Liquid Crystal Display is, but what's a television set?

Swish? Ha-Ha? I think you meant "Swedish". Did ya not?

Ya bunch of technology thieves, did you really think we were going to buy that? First pizza now telly. Got no shame 'ave ye?

No, I meant swish. As in "I say. The Robinsons' new conservatory is a bit swish!" And I never said pizza! I said Prezza! :lbf:

Another deeply excellent Hull invention: Hull Truck Theatre Company. :)

EDIT: And Maureen Lipman!

I also think The Clarence Flour Mills and The British Extracting Company building are some of the most beautiful I've seen.

Bring a chip fork, a bow-legged terrier and be prepared for friendly bus drivers and chatty shopgirls, species which I have rarely encountered south of Peterborough. No cloth caps east of the Pennines, please - they are soooooo Lancashire!

You were on the right road, but the Tiger Inn is further up Anlaby Rd towards the city centre, close to the old Tower nightclub and the back of the station.

Well, the hookers had to go somewhere after they were chased off Commercial corner....

"unwashed"? And how do you know? Haah! Busted.:D

Hmmm. Humanity is threatened by a horrible pandemy, and yet, this thread goes round and round prostitutes and toilets, as if nothing was more important, in Hull.

It got voted the "crappiest" town in the uk, so make your own mind up Rob:thumb:

Hull has the same problems of most northern English towns; unemployment, deprivation, drugs and sink hole estates, etc. That silly little "Crap Towns" book that cemented the town's "crap" reputation also pointed out that Hull also scored top of the "friendliest town" league, but people conveniently forget that.

If you wash after touching unicorn droppings, you lose the magic, so the chaps from the hostel who are dragooned into selling the stuff don't get a shower before heading off to spend their meagre wages on bruised hookers outside Hull Royal Infirmary. See? It all makes sense. Although if swine flu is transmissible via unicorn poo Hull's already in the magical shite anyway...

The Deep is the world's first submarium. It's HUGE and it's got ruddy great sharks in it. It has its own loos which were quite nice when I visited. I didn't see any prostitutes there, though. A no-ho area, maybe.
