I didnt sleep 3 days- neither on the festival (no tent ) nor in berlin (no money for a hotel)-without any drugs or caffeine to stay awake..i had to skip school for the berlin gig. told my mother i was sleeping ata friends house to report from the festival:D....ahh those were the days...

I like them, but I still can't listen to an entire album in one go. All the songs start to blur. (I have Daydream Nation[/b], [i]Sister, and Goo.)

I've never seen them, because I missed my chance to go with a friend in 1990.

My faveourite non-morrissey song of all time.

OH yes their carpenters cover is great
the song tunic from goo is a dedication to karen who died cause of a the result of a eating disorder

the orginal is quite haunting too.

Jgs8zeKegs4

.the sadness in her voice which contrasted with often much happier lyrics-i think nick cave has commented on that issue too

i just got 'Dirty', and I have 'EVOL', 'Sister' and 'Daydream Nation' too. the only one i really like is DN. it seems like it's the most accessible of the ones i've heard, but most people believe 'Dirty' or 'Goo' are. i haven't been able to get into the other ones, but i understand why people like them and think they are talented.

the "playing the complete album" they did in 2007
with daydream nation....very cool to hear the complete album live

think more bands should be doing that
the sparks did do that too, right?

I love Sonic Youth. I've seen them live a number of times and they were incredible every time. Thurston Moore is a guitar genius. I saw Free Kitten once in a very small venie in Brighton. Thurston was there (to support the wife) and so was Graham Coxon from Blur. There were probably about 50 other people. It was a great gig but not as good as SY.

My favourite band that is still a going concern.

Interesting to hear what their next album will sound like since Thurston was complaining so bitterly about 'major label interference'.

'EVOL' is possibly my all time favourite album.

I think 1991 the year punk broke is up on google video. I remember watching it and being astonished. My first short movie had a humble allusion to it.

I used to worship Sonic Youth in high school. For me, the 1988-1995 period is thier best. I saw them on the 'Washing Machine' tour in Australia and then on the 'A Thousand Leaves' tour. After listening to 'Daydream Nation' and a live bootleg from 1985 I used to thrash, I think SY wore out my patience for long songs. (That along with writing about experimental electronica fro three years!)

I really need to track down some older SY albums and give them a chance. I have Confusion Is Sex (which I like but is a bit spotty at times for my musical sensibilities), Daydream Nation, Dirty, Experimental Jet Set..., and all the main albums since Murray Street. I agree about them getting better with age, at least from what I've heard of the band. Murray Street, Sonic Nurse, and Rather Ripped are all consistently wonderful.

My favourite album is 'Goo'; I saw them live in 1992 during the 'Dirty' tour at the glorious 'Rolling Stone' in Milan, the support act was a 'young' (and very drunk) band called Pavement.

SONIC YOUTH ETC.: SENSATIONAL FIX

The museum exhibition SONIC YOUTH ETC. : SENSATIONAL FIX focuses on the multidisciplinary activities of Sonic Youth since the band's formation in 1981. It features the band's collaborations with visual artists, filmmakers, designers and musicians, as well as a choice of other works selected by the band. Through the multidisciplinary output of Sonic Youth and related works by other artists in the exhibition, an alternative history of contemporary culture is being uncovered in which the division between 'high art' and 'low art' is being called into question, while issues are explored such as teenage rebellion, adolescent wanderlust, gender, fame, fashion, sexuality, and religion. The exhibition is initiated and curated by freelance curator Roland Groenenboom in collaboration with the band and will be presented in Bolzano, Italy (from 10 October 2008 to 4 January 2009), and Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, Germany (31 January to 26 April 2009). Next up is The Museum of Malmo, Sweden (from May 29 to September 20 2009). Further venues are currently in discussion, in Europe, the US and Asia. A complete description of the show can be found here.

I love them to death! I finally got to see them play live a year ago, and it was immense. I was a metre from Lee! His hair was feathered like the wings of an angel! He graciously accepted our gift of peppermints! Really, I can't fault even one second of the experience.

An unbelievably great band, my favourite is Goo but any of theirs are woth picking up. Along with Steve Albini, Thurston Moore is an absolute hero for noise rock fans.

Sonic Youth’s 16th album, ‘The Eternal’, will be released on vinyl, compact disc, and digital album by Matador Records on June 9. Produced by John Agnello and the band, ‘The Eternal’ not only marks Sonic Youth’s return to the independent label sphere (titles on their own SYR label excepted) after a long association with Geffen, but more importantly, ranks as one of their more inspired efforts in a 28 year career.

Recorded through November and December of last year at the band’s Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, NJ, ‘The Eternal’ features many firsts for a Sonic Youth album, including a number of shared vocals between Kim, Thurston, and Lee, and the studio debut of former Pavement/Dustdevils bassist Mark Ibold, a member of Sonic Youth’s touring band for the past few years. They will be touring throughout the summer in support of the new album.

Of ‘The Eternal’, Matador’s Gerard Cosloy says, “We’ve not had a record in our recent history that’s been the subject of nearly as much speculation and anticipation. Suffice to say we’re pretty amazed at the way the band delivered something this neoteric while still sounding like, well, themselves. Less of a reinvention and perhaps more to do with a particularly awesome dozen songs.”

The lead track on the forthcoming Sonic Youth album ‘The Eternal' is available Monday 20th April as an MP3 from Matador. ‘Sacred Trickster', which clocks in at 2′10″ is an out-of-the gate hardcore matinee track with Kim singing salutes to French painter Yves Klein and Western Massachusetts noise artist Noise Nomads.
Matador will shortly announce a Buy Early Get Now opportunity for the album with some very interesting bonus material.

Tracklisting:
1. Sacred Trickster 2. Anti-Orgasm 3. Leaky Lifeboat(for Gregory Corso) 4. Antenna 5. What We Know 6. Calming The Snake 7. Poison Arrow 8. Malibu Gas Station 9. Thunderclap For Bobby Pyn 10. No Way 11. Walkin Blue 12. Massage The History
http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/2009/03/03/save-the-date-sonic-youth-the-eternal-buy-early-get-now-launches-april-28/
there is a special: an extra ep and also some extra tracks all explained in the matador blog how to get that ^

another project beck and sonic youth do cover each other
Sonic Youth will take on “Pay No Mind” from Beck’s Mellow Gold, and Beck will try his hand at “Green Light.” Sonic Youth will also contribute a new song titled “No Garage” to the b-side of a split with Jay Reatard.
