View Full Version : The Ricky Gervais Appreciation Thread
iamkali62 September 22, 2008, 07:34 PM I saw him on the Emmys last night and he is SO MUCH funnier than Steve Carell and I want to see his new movie, which I can't think of the name right now, but he makes me laugh even when he smiles that smile of his. So, today I salute Mr. Ricky Gervais! :guitar:
IDon'tOweYouAnything23 September 22, 2008, 07:40 PM The American version of the Office was tragic in comparison with the British one, I like Steve Carell but he just couldn't match up to Ricky Gervais

Steve Carell and the U.S. version of, "The Office" is so not funny. The bit at the Emmys between Carell and Gervais was hilarious but Ricky just has that ...I don't know. He's just funnier that Steve Carell! :D

I never saw the Emmys tbh, I'll have to you tube it ;) Gervais is dryer and more sarcastic, the office makes me cringe, in a good way I suppose! Whereas Carell's comedy is...more obvious imo

That's what I like about Gervais's humor. It's nice and dry and sarcastic. And he has that embarrassed smile in the Office when something goes wrong. Carell just boings in every different direction. Not funny. I don't like pie in the face humor.
Many Others Do September 22, 2008, 07:56 PM The (UK) Office was really good, and Extras was pretty good most of the time, but Gervais' stand-up leaves a lot to be desired. There's no real wit or improvisation involved - he basically cobbles together a string of mediocre jokes and delivers them in such a way that you can tell he has rehearsed the routine to within an inch of its' life. Animals was funny, Politics was funny in places, but Fame is borderline terrible. I recommend that anyone who has not bought the Fame DVD buys 'Randomist' by Ross Noble instead.
In fact, someone should start a Ross Noble Appreciation thread. I would, but I can't be bothered.

I like pie in the face humour now and again, but I think Carell tries too hard to imitate Gervais in the office and it just doesn't work. Gervais all the way :)
mozmal September 22, 2008, 09:19 PM The Office and Extras are probably the funniest TV to come out of the UK in the last 10 years. At times they make you cringe, but they are so consistently funny. The Office Christmas specials were just so beautifully written and acted and had the best finale that you could have hoped for. I've never seen the US version, so I can't comment. I agree with others here that the Gervais stand up shows are patchy at best; he doesn't have to make crass jokes about kids with cancer, he's naturally funny, anyway.

p.s. Evan Almighty was better than I thought it would be. :o:)
Zelda Zonk September 23, 2008, 04:16 PM 2 funniest things you will ever see:
1) the extras on The Office dvd - outtakes, making of the difficult 2nd series, and tying up the editor.
2) Gervais talking about a leaflet he found at university about different ways to cum. On the Politics stand-up show I think.

Cheer Grim, this is great. I love Ricky.
He does the best podcast ever, but I guess that is more thanks to Karl Pilkington.
Love PTxx.

Sore Lips December 10, 2008, 08:10 AM Predictably, there is some American Office bashing. However, I really love both...for different reasons.
I;ve been listening to the Ricky Gervais show back in the XFM years and im on the last episode, which makes me sad since the podcasts aren't as spontaneous and Karl is harrassed a lot more.

I think he looks so cute in those pajamas with his Emmy and teddy bear!
The other, well all I can say is poor Karl!
I can't wait for his episode of Inside The Actors Studio this evening!:o

Mozzy1 January 20, 2009, 01:00 PM He is really cute. Nice hair & eyes.
I caught some of his TV special & he's pretty funny. He's great on the Office.
My favorite when was he was on Graham Norton.

Mozza220559 January 20, 2009, 02:25 PM I think Ricky is one of the British greats, his quality of comedy and references points and routine are so above par compared to most comedians of today and from yesteryear. His stand-up shows are of course brilliant, I will always love what he is best at, though his TV work, when he writes and directs with Stephen Merchant and acts. The XFM show was a true gem along with the fantastic podcasts. Ricky is brilliant. I love him.

vicarinatutugal February 2, 2009, 05:45 PM From Ricky Gervais' latest blog entry:
Dear Mr President,
Firstly, congratulations on your historic win. I have never been so behind a candidate for what must be considered the boss of the world.
You seem to be a man of grace and integrity, who would never shirk responsibility in any way.
I'll get to the point.
As I'm sure you are aware, one of your flock has strayed. A Miss Paris Hilton, who is, I believe, a resident of Beverley Hills, is in England doing a reality game show for ITV2 called Paris Hilton's British Best Friend. Fine. I have no problem with that. I don't have to watch. But now it has come to my attention that she has bought a house in North London a few miles from me, and is out and about ingratiating herself with the Great British public.
Mr President. We are not stupid. This is clearly a retaliatory strike for Posh Spice moving to LA. I know it, and you know it, so let's cut the "it's a free country" nonsense and come to some agreement.
I propose an exchange.
This is how it would work. We call them both and tell them that we've found a giant "paparazzi nest", in New York say. (half way home for both of them already)
At first they may be confused that they'd never heard of such a thing before, but the thought of that many photographers in one place will be irresistible.
Once we get them there, while they are having their photos taken (we will have hire a few guys with cameras to make it look good) we will swap their limos around. It's fool proof.
This is a covert operation of which Mr Gordon Brown knows nothing. (I've got him working on finding a synthetic fur for The Queen's guards' bearskin hats.)
Have your people call my people. They may have to call a few times as my people are useless to be honest.
Thank you,
Ricky Gervais
