I'm confused entirely about them atm :( I think I've picked my 5 (York, Sheffield, Manchester, Leicester and Queens' Belfast), but I will probably chop and change a few before I apply.

Which Uni did you go to, and was it all that you had hoped?

Queens' Belfast

wasn't always the most comfortable experience, but that was about 15 years ago (and it kinda depended what subjects you were studying). i'm sure it's a lot better now.

what do you want to study, amy?

I went to Wimbledon School of Art and then London Met Uni. Wimbledon was good, mostly, only my tutor didn't like me at all and tried to fail me :tears: but it didn't work :) London Met was great though!

I'm off to Uni this year, I remember doing the whole UCAS thing, it was quite a bastard! It annoyed me that it charged £15 aswell :p But, persevere, don't rush into making your choices either! I picked 5 good universities; Manchester, Bristol amongst a few others. My sixth form gave me crap predictive grades (which I surpassed) but that meant I wasn't even considered by 3 of the universities! But, I got into the one I wanted thankfully :) It was the case last year, I think there is the option of making a sixth choice within like 14 days of making your final five, think that costs an extra fiver though! :p
You should go to as many open days as you can and make sure the Universities are catered towards what you want to do, check out the syllabuses and such ;)

English, and then afterwards Journalism. I asked my careers advisor about Queens and he said it's mostly unaffected by the prejudice/bigotry of the 'Troubles', but I don't think it's something you can really judge until you've spent some time there. Why was it uncomfortable for you? (You're from N. Ireland, yeah?)

Thanks for the link, very useful :)

What were your predicted grades? Mine are AAB so I don't think I have much chance of getting into York, but I thought I might as well try. Queens Belfast is BBB, so I think I might make that my insurance.

Errm something like ABC, I got AAB, Manchester wanted 3 As I think, so I wouldn't have got in there anyways :( I was quite gutted I never made Queens one of my choices, it looks like a nice Uni, York's worth a shot, you might do better than predicted! ;)

He doesn't at the moment, he's working abroad I think, but he will be back in a few years time :)

Yeah they do, from what I have read and seen on the Open Day, they really bend over backwards to help with money issues.

I can tell you from (VERY) recent first hand experience that Queen's (not Queens') is a fantastic Uni. Not only in academic terms, but the whole student area is amazing. I was back visiting friends only last week - I meant to stay for one day and ended up staying for 6 it was that good.

Also, the "Troubles" ended over 10 years ago, so I wouldn't worry about it - I'd say it's a lot safer than most uni's because all the student accommodation is located mainly in one area (South Belfast) so there are always plenty of other students about (at day and night). Safety in numbers, n all that. Plus, it means you are only ever a stone's throw away from a good house party.

Yeah i am hoping to have mine doen by then as well. It's half done anyway.

With popular courses they don't hand out offers until after the deadline so it doesn't really matter when you apply. Or at least that is what i was told.

I thought so too, but I've heard from a few people who have offers already, from Exeter to do English etc. They ask for AAA so I didn't apply there, Manchester is hard enough to get into without having 2 with those grades lol

I sent my UCAS off today. My choices were: Manchester (x2) Nottingham/ Exeter/ Edinburgh.

Hoping mostly for Manchester or Edinburgh. I am looking to do Literature with American Studies. This latter course means that I spend a year in the States.

I am predicted AAA which is a lot to live up to but I am going to work hard.

Off to bed now to dream once more about touring with Tegan and Sara!!

I'm applying for Literature on it's own, but I was torn about American Studies at Manchester because I'd love to travel to the US. I'll be spending 4 years at Uni anyway though, not sure I'd want the debt of five :(

 I didn't think it was possible to send your UCAS off without first having the reference added?? How would they go about doing it separately?

Once you send it and pay that is when your college or whoever gets it and does the reference.

Yes, but when you pay and press 'Send' it doesn't go straight to UCAS, it goes to the careers department at college, who then add your reference and check everything over before sending it to UCAS? PT's post sounded like the application had already gone to UCAS without a reference, and his teachers were adding it on or something?

Hi, I have just graduated from Leicester with a degree in English and I couldn't recommend it more highly. The course is well structured and the lecturers are not only extremely competent but also very approachable and helpful. I hope you put it through as one of your choices because it's definitely worth looking at. By the way, I didn't get my acceptance from Leicester until around February so I wouldn't worry about that.

ooh, I haven't been to an Open Day yet PT, could you tell me a little about what Lancs is like when you get back??

I can tell you now, I have been a few times before to see my brother. As a University it is all on campus. The accomodation is really nice from what I have seen and very modern; my brother has an en-suite bathroom and then has a communal kitchen to meet everybody. He seems to absolutely love the lectures so I assume the teaching is of a high standard. If you get the English course then I'm sure you won't regret it. I think the lecturers have a great relationship with the students and get everyone involved. It has struck me as a really, really great university and everyone seem to get along well; there are many student ambassadors who are always happy to help people out etc. On sit I think my brother said that there are little areas like a post office, newsagents and general store for little bits and pieces; as for big food shopping you can get a bus from the campus into Lancaster where there is a massive Sainsburys.

As for Lancaster as a town/ city ( I still don't know what to class it as ) it seems incredible beautiful; it is quite old fashioned and small but with a great atmosphere surrounding the place. There is a little market area but there is also the regular shops, HMV, Waterstones, a shopping centre etc. I think it a bit of everything for everybody. Also, there is a great student life e.g. the bars and pubs around the area seem really nice. I know that various campus accomdation houses at Lancaster also hold parties etc. at various times. Don't forget also that there is Lancaster Castle which seems like a great little place; you could sit against the battlement walls and read literature whilst looking over Lancaster. If you fancy a quiet day away from the heart of the place then you are not short of walks or places to visit. My brother regularly goes up to the Lake District and spends days walking there and having a break in the countryside.

I basically highly recommend it. It seems to have everything one could possibly ask for in a University and town/ city. The only reason I am not trying to go is that (a) my brother goes there and I don't want to keep following him at every stage of life and (b) if I did go I would end up doing exactly the same course as he does which would make my 'not following my brother at every stage of life' even worse.

Anyway, good luck....if you need anymore help just let me know either here or by PM.

Off to bed now as I am shattered...I had to do a whole 1 hour work at school today :eek: and it has killed me.

Love PTxx.

I did all this buisness last year.
Somehow I managed to get into Manchester for next year to do History which is great.
Since the offers for highly subscribed courses such as English are higher my advice would be to apply for a joint honours course such as English and Philosophy or History or something. You'll get lower offers, may discover a new subject that you love and if not you can always change your course when you get there in september. A friend of mine got into manchester with BBB to do economics and history and he can easily change his course to straight history which gives out AAA offers.
Good luck with it all, I know its a bitch.

I did toy with the idea of applying for English & History, but in most cases the Uni's ask for an 'A' in both subjects, and I'm not sure I'd get one in History. At the minute, places like Manchester and Sheffield have the same entry requirements for History & English as they do the individual degrees (AAA/AAB at Manchester, AAB at Sheffield), and at Leeds the History course has higher entry requirements than the English = AAA. I thought it best to stick to English, and maybe do some History electives if I get the chance :)

I'm currently reading Global Security & Disaster Management.
Always wanted to do something different, I never really wanted to go to uni but thought I'd give this course a try. I'm in Coventry, I didn't have a choice with location as this is the only uni that does this course at undergraduate. I'm in my second year now and well, it's ok. I haven't really enjoyed uni because I just find it difficult to fit in with the typical student lifestyle. I've spent a fair amount of time on my own but I don't mind that, if anything I prefer it sometimes/ most the time. I'm currently living in a house with other people I play football with, which is better than halls because there aren't any plonkers dragging me to a crap party etc.
Next year I'll hopefully do a placement somewhere, then in the final year get a flat to myself with the money I'll save from the placement so I'm not disturbed when working hard. I guess I'm lucky that I have a strong base at home, I go back regularly to watch Stockport County and away games too so it provides something to look forward to during some of the dull times.

In general everybody I know seems to love uni. I don't personally but at least I'll get an interesting degree out of it (hopefully)

I applied for (in order of preference): Goldsmiths, Liverpool, University of Arts London, Brighton and Canterbury Christ Church.

I sent off my applications mid-late November of 2008, recieved an offer from Liverpool by the middle of December, and an interview at Goldsmiths on January 21st, 2009.

I'm happy as I have Liverpool as my backup, and it is my second choice.
