I hate my accent (It's not that strong but still), and I know 100% of the British public do too :(

My chat up lines don't get the chance to fail, my accent kills them straight off:(

The accents that I love and find really sexy; Glaswegian, Geordie, Belfast ones and generic posh. Cork and Dublin ones too, infact anyone form there could read the phone book to me and I'd be theirs in a flash! ;)

So, what accents do you like/dislike?

I doubt it.

I remember the first time I flew into Boston. I got off the plane at Logan, and I had to ask an airline employee something. She answered, and I just blinked at her--I thought she was retarded or had a speech impediment. Srsly. :o :D

Which is it? I love London ones the best (yes I know there's several, I like all of them :)), but also any English ones, then Scottish (Glasgow in particular) then Irish. American accents are less interesting :p. Australians can either be cute or annoying. Really don't like South African ones. (Can you tell this is my favorite subject? :D)

YES YES YES! I've been asking Blaze to do that for years but he keeps refusing .

Boring text, but this is what they use on the Speech Accent Archive (http://accent.gmu.edu/), I guess it uses all the possible vowel sounds:
Please call Stella. Ask her to bring these things with her from the store: Six spoons of fresh snow peas, five thick slabs of blue cheese, and maybe a snack for her brother Bob. We also need a small plastic snake and a big toy frog for the kids. She can scoop these things into three red bags, and we will go meet her Wednesday at the train station.
EDIT: Oh, the Moz lyrics idea is better!

NRITH suggested readng "Maladjusted." He thinks it's Morrissey's best poem.

I like that idea, but the official passage linguists use, cited above, would be good. I think that one was developed because it contains all the phonemes in English.

Yeah, me too, I'm easily amused.

I think the Finnish have the cutest accent when speaking English. They can't pronunce the sh sounds properly, it's very cute and funny and terribly difficult to understand.

Hungarian accent sounds awful, we can't pronounce the th sound properly and instead of thank you we either say sank you or fank you.:o (Not me.)

I tend to mumble, and for an accent that's pretty deep and rough, it makes it hard to make me out...:)

I like the Geordie accent, especially on women, specifically women and the way the Welsh speak English is really pleasant on the ear. I also like how non-native English, specifically Europeans speak English, it makes it sound sexy and glamorous to me.

Ok, after things quiet down around here, I am going to record a wav file of myself reading that "tell stella" passage and put it on sendspace. I'll label the file with where I'm from, which is nowhere specific, I've lived all over the US.

Everyone I know is wrong! Firstly I sometimes get teased at school for sounding northern, then my sister asked me why I lisp on occasion.
Most southerners will say 'ask' as 'ahsk', 'bath' as 'bahth', etc., but I say it with a short 'a' sound. There are a couple of other strange affectations that I have too, but I can't think of any right now.

I don't know what I sound like, really. I think I might just sound like a generic American. My family had a slight southern accent and I HATED it as a child. I remember being in the first grade and trying hard to not sound like my family... and it worked.

Some relatives from New York tell me they can hear a trace of a southern accent when I speak, which horrifies me as I still loathe that twangy sound. (I think she was just being mean to me, actually.)

Someone from the deep south once asked me if I was English. :/

So no idea.

I really like the idea of hearing what everyone sounds like. How do we do it?

I have a question: Is an American accent EVER sexy to foreign ears? I've heard we sound dreadful to most.

I don't have an accent.

I've been told numerous times though over the years that I have a really sexy speaking voice. I don't think I do, I really don't. My job consist mostly of talking on the phone and people have commented on it. (no, im not a phone sex operator!!) I think I sound like a little kid though. I'm thinking about videos there are of me around, I can think of 3, but I'm singing, not talking, in all of them! :o not posting those.

I find (extreme) Southern accents, Boston, and Minnesota/Michigan accents pretty annoying. I don't mind NY accents. Philadelphians have an accent, but it's not nearly as distinct as other parts of the country, and I'd imagine you could only hear it if you grew up around here. I like English accents...I can't understand Scottish accents at all though.

I sort of have created my own accent because it's not really regional. I have a different accent when I speak my first language which is portuguese, the same with english, spanish and french. I guess it's because I've lived in different places since I was a kid so I never got a real regional accent.
And I'm not recording because I hate my voice.:D

Not Right in the Head - "Stella!" (http://nrith.tibbetts.net/stella.mp3)

I grew up here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=11th+ave.+se,+cedar+rapids,+ia&sll=41.975166,-91.623058&sspn=27.285679,31.113281&ie=UTF8&ll=41.967659,-91.625977&spn=27.285679,31.113281&z=5), but with parents who were from Minneapolis (5 hours north), so it's not quite the same accent as my classmates'.

EDIT: In the interests of full disclosure, this file is being hosted on my own Web site.

You sound a bit like Kermit the frog.

I hate my accent, the Australian accent is terrible, I think it's impossible for an Australian to sound intelligent ... we take slang talk to a whole different level and while I'm guilty of some of that myself I don't think my accent is typically Australian. My parents are irish and still have their accent so mine seems to be a bit of a mix.

I hadn't read (or heard) this thread until last night... it's a good one :D Unless NRitH secretly tape records me, you won't hear my voice posted here. I don't know how, anyway.

I have a pretty flat Chicago/Illinois accent. Although, I've been told that it IS an accent and I certainly have it. Yes, there is definitely a hard and distinctive Chicago accent and like Pregs said, a difference between southsiders (who have it) and northsiders who don't (as much). I can easily get a southern drawl/accent into my voice. My Dad (raised in Atlanta) still has it. If I'm around 'southern style' family for 5 minutes, I'm soon talking with a twang. ;)

I'm told I sound young on the phone, also that I mumble, and that I'm a 'soft talker' at times. And that Italk toooo much. :D

GAH! *the whole time I've been typing this post, NRitH's voice reading has come on about 10 times. :D His voice isn't what I expected either, but it's nice. He has a lovely reading voice & I agree with whoever said he should do books on tape.

I had dream last night that I met him. I think it's cuz I heard this (and Preg's)goodnight reading and went to bed. I met him in a hotel room with other people. Woke him out of bed and hugged him. :D Don't worry -it was clean. We are all clothed. Pervs.

There are a couple of other strange affectations that I have too, but I can't think of any right now.

I thought up of another speech affectation I have. When saying some words with a 'k' sound on the end of the syllable (e.g. book, like, back) I often pronounce it as a guttaral sound (e.g. Buch in German). I think that's a rather Liverpudlian thing from what I've heard.

September 5, 2008, 05:58 PM
As well as accents, I like how different nationalities will pronounce words differently ... the brits says vit-a-min where in Australia (probably US too?) say vite-a-min, or the brits will say yog-urt where as here it would be yo-gurt. Then there is aluminum, the American is al-um-min-um, and here its al-um-min-ee-um.
I also find it funny how no matter how different English accents can be, you all seem to say "room" in exactly the same way, it's hard to explain via text but unlike most who would draw out the "oo" sound it's a sharper "oom!", it almost sounds like you're revving an engine! "room! room! vrooooom!"

yeah sleep deprivation is a wonderful thing.

I mean seriously, how is any one child in an honors program absent two of the first four days of school under the excuse of "Its too hot to go to school?"

Wtf. That is seriously the stupidest excuse ever. I think if I ever tried to pull that one on my dad he'd whack me upside my head.

Actually, when I was in fourth grade, I think they once canceled recess and made us stay inside because it was too hot.

Nonsensical absence is the one thing I have zero tolerance for. I had a history of excessive absences for every year she was in school. There are about 184 days of school here in NYC. This girl was absent last year 63 times and late another 84 times. This is no exaggeration. By late I mean showing up to school around 10am to 11am. (We start at 8am.)

Some people do not understand the concept of: If you do not take the class you cannot pass the class.

This thread is fun. I can't believe I forgot to record Corrissey's voice on Friday night! It didn't sound Chicago-ish to me; it almost sounded a bit Wisconsin-y.

We're shy.

I want someone to read out the lyrics to This Charming Man in a thick Yorky or Lanky accent. That'd be grand! :)

I think I fancy the woman in our Paris office who I've never seen.

Whenever she rings, I see her number on the screen and automatically answer with "Bonjour, Edwige" (which is her name) in my best french accent, and she does a sexy french giggle and says "Hello, Josh" (Which is my name) and it's all quite exciting for first thing in the morning.

I can't help it--your voice reminded me a tiny bit of my Minnesohta relatives.

I would but I don't think it's thick enough, plus I can only record on a camera and it makes me sound high pitched (which I'm not I promise!:p)

Oops, Chica did it again (http://nrith.tibbetts.net/chica.mp3)

Again, if you're Dave, be aware that your IP address will be logged if you listen to this. Oh noez!

I might do it if I got a bit drunk. I'm far too self conscious to speak as myself, but maybe if I could do a sort of lyric-based monologue, in character....

don't listen to its his cunning plan again to get your IP addresses

 I just said that! But no, I can't associate any IP addresses with individual usernames. Unless, of course, that user is the the only SoLowist in a given country, like Serbia or Hungary. :)
