View Full Version : The Sundays and The Trashcan Sinatras
oye terence June 2, 2008, 02:25 AM I am not sure if this has been a thread before,if so,oh well....
I love The sundays and have recently been listening to them again,as well as the Trashcan Sinatras.
I am a slave to jingle jangle guitar pop.

neonmad June 2, 2008, 02:49 AM I think there was a Sundays thread...either that or I was commenting about them in some other thread...:p:confused:
I, too, bear the shackles. Thanks for posting this, Terence, I'm pretty sure I hadn't *seen* the singer; or maybe I'm blocking out my teens better than I thought I can't believe I never Youtubed The Sundays in all this time.
Aw, I remember Hayfever...
Hidden By Rags June 2, 2008, 04:30 AM I love the The Trashcan Sinatras, and you're in luck, they are close to completing their new album. This band has had such a bad run, in terms of promotion and label woes, that they were forced into bankruptcy many moons ago. That they still preservere and continue to make music despite lack of mainstream success makes me love them more.
I enjoy reading this part of their website: studio recording update (http://www.trashcansinatras.com/gigs-pastrecording.php)
Where's Charlie, whose siggy has one of the best lines written by TCS. I'm sure he can add more about them. ;)
Long live jingle jangle pop!
still I cling June 2, 2008, 01:19 PM ooohhhh....nice taste! I found both groups a little late, but love them both. I only discovered the Trashcan Sinatras after their "Weightlifting" album got some airplay on the local college station. Good stuff...thanks for posting!
oye terence June 2, 2008, 03:25 PM perhaps I should have just titled this the jingle jangle music thread.

CharlieFairhead June 2, 2008, 03:48 PM Cheers HBR, Oh i love the TCS too.
For some reason they don't have a record deal again...as yet anyway. Sign of the times i guess. The new album sounds like it will be amazing..still finishing it off though.
Nice thread!
P.S Terence did you ever check out this band? If not i reckon you'll love them.

Yes, Weightlifting was really good, as was their debut, Cake.
Looking forward to the new one.
Has anyone heard their 1993 record I've Seen Everything? Been looking for it, but with no luck as of yet.

I have to agree - Weightlifting is fantastic. What a great band. I saw them in Dublin on the last tour and it was as good as always. Such an underrated band - and total gentlemen. Also think that A Happy Pocket is up there.

Hidden By Rags June 3, 2008, 03:28 AM I guess I'm jumping the gun assuming TCS will have the record laid out for all to buy upon release!
Oye Terrence, my favorite Ocean Blue song is 'Ticket to Wyoming'. Hm, will have to see if there's a vid for it...
edit: no, but I've forgotten about 'Between Something and Nothing'!
SNS22 June 3, 2008, 03:54 AM Love both bands. Think Harriet Wheeler is the most talented female voice ever created. I am looking forward to her return whenever she choses to come back from mother-hood. Does anyone happen to have a recording of The Sundays performing Reel Around The Fountain?

boy_afraid_Liverpool June 4, 2008, 06:08 PM I have got "Ive seen everything", "Cake", "A happy pocket" and "Weightlifting" on CD.
I also have "Zebra of the family" which is a cd from the trashcan sinatra's website that just says its "Demos and debris!" and I also have the "Weightlifting" EP which features 3 tracks from the album follwed by a live recording from Paris in 96.
I also have about 26 non album tracks (including a cover of "I know its over") some of these may be on Zebra of the family I have never really looked that closely!
I also have the three Sundays studio albums, and a couple of singles

Zebra of the Family has some amazing stuff, one of my favorites is
'To Sir, With Love' the alternate version. I was indifferent to it at first, but it became one of my favorites over time.
Amazingly, TCS have a lot of downloads to offer on their site.
SNS22, glad you put 'I've Seen Everything' up for some of you, I somehow missed that post. I actually rate that better than Cake, but then, it was the first TCS album I bought.
I haven't seen 2 pages devoted to (mostly) TCS anywhere in cyberspace on a general music forum! :) And I have to admit I know very few songs by the Sundays.

Now I've heard everything (by the Trash Cans).
Kewpie June 5, 2008, 12:18 PM I'm a fan since their debut in 1990.
Haven't seen their live for a while, but they always play some songs from I've Seen Everything.
Shame I was unable to see them when they're supporting Prefab Sprout UK tour in 1992.
Really look forward to listening their new album.
SNS22 June 5, 2008, 06:27 PM If anyone has anything live, especially from 1989-1990, it would be most appreciated if you could upload it.
I think it's been said that the hero from Thrupenny Tears is Morrissey.

I wonder if the music will reflect the cover of the new album, which I haven't decided if I like or not yet. I love the red though. To read the title is hard on the (well my) eyes. Actually I remember reading that the cover art was in contrast to the music, I think.

Long-time lurker on the board but I've, rather shamefacedly, been lured out of hiding to beg for this to be re-upped, if at all possible please!
The new album really is wonderful. It slowly but surely unfurls its charms, in a similar way to how I found 'I've Seen Everything' took a little while to click.
I finally bought the 'Troubadour' DVD the other week and it arrived today. Really good sound for what is clearly a low-budget release.

Nicely put, welcome in. It's really grown on me, I've been playing it non-stop. Nice that your first post is on this thread, assuming you're already a Smiths/Moz fan. Can't help with the Weightlifting e.p. tracks though.
Marblehead Johnson May 16, 2009, 01:16 PM The Trashcan's are an amazing band. Been a fan through thick and thin for 20 years, and first saw them live in May 1990 at The Borderline in London.
In a strange kinda way, I've always enjoyed the fact that they never really 'made it', and remained my little secret !
In all those years it's just me and one other mate who seemed to get them, no one else I knew jumped on board. Frank is a genius lyricist, his wordplay is simply brilliant. I'm listening to 'Cake' as I write and "you came into my life like a brick through a window, and I cracked a smile" springs to mind as one that always makes me smile.
The new album is of course marvellous, and I love the fact that you get a download instantly when you pre order the special edition not out until August. AND I get my name in the liner notes !
Bad_Ambassador, I can help you out with those live tracks if you're still looking, let me know.
In fact, I can help fill in any blanks for anyone who's looking, happy to help.
One thing I've never been able to get hold of is 'Spooktime'. Can anyone here help ? I went to the GO Discs premier screening of it in London in what must have been about 1996 and haven't seen it since. You can see clips of it on YouTube with various videos like 'To Sir With Love' but I've never found the whole film anywhere.

If I seem harsh, I am sorry, but Charlie is not lousy. But, I am glad you saw the mistake, and I am sorry if I was harsh.
boy_afraid_Liverpool May 18, 2009, 07:20 PM Well now we have both apologised shall we drop the word moron and hug?
Seriously sorry for any offence caused it was meant in the best spirit because of what I mistakenly thought I was seeing.

I am sorry, I think I am a bit bitchy today, no harm done.Yes I understand, it was meant well. simply mistakes.
The more important question is, have you heard it, I think its rather good, myself.
Kewpie May 18, 2009, 07:26 PM Charlie never posts the download links of hard working bands' latest album or singles.

I think it's very honourable you stuck up for the band, no worries for the confusion.

DAVIE August 7, 2009, 08:47 PM You have to love The Sundays if you like The Smiths because they are very similar!
"What Do You Think?" "24 Hours" "Blood on My Hands", "A Certain Someone", "I Kicked a Boy", "My Finest Hour" and "Here's Where the Story Ends"
They are the best songs!!! I suggest you listen!

I still remember the first time heard 'Can't Be Sure' in January 1989 from John Peel.
Many people in here still love The Sundays.
DAVIE August 7, 2009, 08:53 PM That's good because they only released 3 albums and they could get together...but they obviously can't be bothered haha
CharlieFairhead September 15, 2009, 05:37 PM The new Trashcan Sinatras album 'In The Music' is out today in the UK, just a reminder..they don't get much press.
They're too busy worrying about non celebrity Jordan gorging herself to death on hob nobs.
Anyway stop me getting started, as that ginger misery Mick Hucknall once crooned... well something similar.

Really excited and relieved that I didn't buy 19th Nov Decemberists ticket. :)

What Joe said, except from the north of England.
Marblehead Johnson October 20, 2009, 06:39 PM Got my Trashcan's tickets booked for London, looks like a great venue.
It seems the 6 UK dates announced so far are all there's going to be now. Although they are planning a more extensive tour for early next year apparently.

Oh, I hope you do get to see them next time around.
My perception is that they just get more exposure here in the States (tour-wise, certainly not airplay) than back in their own turf. I never quite understood that.
Poor you, I'm going to see them on Thursday.
Have a good time Kewpie, report back okay?
Kewpie November 16, 2009, 10:01 AM Have a good time Kewpie, report back okay?
Sure, I'll post it. :)
Got a newsletter this morning, they added some shows in Scotland:
nov 22 - radio clyde, billy sloan (between 7:00-10:00) *rescheduled*
nov 23 - glasgow, brel (acoustic show) *new*
nov 25 - glasgow, brel (acoustic show) *new*
nov 28 - kilmarnock, pedestrian precinct (free show, outdoor stage as a part of homecoming scotland celebration) *new*
Kewpie November 20, 2009, 01:19 AM Awww...simply divine gig!
The venue isn't built for hosting concerts, the stage is very small.
Good to see three guitarists (Paul, John and Frank), they played beautifully.
I'm really lucky, they never let me down.
Really relieved that it didn't crash with The Decemberists and other gigs.
So happy to see extreamly enjoyable gigs in two days. :)
