View Full Version : Celebrate drummers
Skinner April 24, 2008, 02:33 PM There are some greatly talented and entertaining drummers out there who I believe are do more credit and spot light than they get. I love drums and drummers and I wanted a thread to celebrate the people who keep the beat and so much more. Post pics, stories, articles or whatever you like of some of your favorite drummers.
I'll start...

Skinner April 24, 2008, 02:42 PM ^^
Thats and excellent pic! What's the story behind it?
nugz April 24, 2008, 02:45 PM I once dated a drummer. for two weeks. back in the summer of 03. fact.

Renia April 24, 2008, 02:45 PM Agreed, Spencer is a delight
What scares you about him??
:)
The We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful video.
*shrugs* I just have unnatural fear of him. I still think he's awesome though.
^^

LOL @ your fear. That video is ridiculous. I think Gary scares me in that video. He looks like he is ready to cut someone.
And this pic of Spence and the dog is adorable!
nugz April 24, 2008, 02:48 PM I also like John Bohham (RIP) ...his skillz on "Since I've Been Loving You" blow me away every time.
http://www.tim-brooks.co.uk/images/drummer/john_bonham.jpg
and, whoever that chick was with the fro, that played drums in the Lenny Kravitz vid for "Are You Gonna Go My Way." yeah. she's cool.
Renia April 24, 2008, 02:49 PM he was still a good drummer.
He was indeed a good drummer, and I give credit for that.
(He is a bit of a douchebag though, but I'm not gonna pretend he wasn't part of The Smiths.)
but please, for the love of god, no pictures of Joyce. He scares me more then Spencer does. Even though I have a couple of pictures of him on my Smiths wall. One of which doesn't even LOOK like him.

Gary does look like he's gonna cut someone. He scares me a bit too. :( He reminds me of Gollum for some reason. I mean, he's a sweetheart, (at least that's what I've heard), but he does scare me a bit too.
Nonetheless, I wanna give all of them (Boz, Alain, Gary, even Spencer) big hugs. :D

Moz can be a bit of a douchebag too, but we still love him! :p:D
Renia April 24, 2008, 02:52 PM Moz can be a bit of a douchebag too, but we still love him! :p:D
I think every Moz fan has to realize how much a douchebag the man can be. The people who don't are living in a pretty little fantasy land. :p
it's what makes him ~Morrissey~.

Yes Bonham was the shit as well. He and Moon died way too young.
Also, I dated a drummer too. For 3 years. It was filled with dramz but I learned a shit ton about music and gained a huge respect for the art of drumming.
Josh Freese has probably played drums on a large percentage of music released in the past 15 years, fact...

Imbrie April 24, 2008, 02:58 PM well, bonham's the best really. what a right foot that man had. i can only dream of being able to do anything like him. so i keep on trying ... anyway.
my current favourite drummer is bryan from 'the national'. he's pretty amazing.

modrevolve April 24, 2008, 03:11 PM being a drummer myself, I'll chime in with a few of my favs most people wouldn't mention
Reni - Stone Roses
Loz - Ride
Mitch Mitchell - Hendrix
Greg Lyons - Laguardia / Eastern Conference Champions
Pete De Freitas - Echo and the Bunnymen
PS - I have no probs admitting Mike Joyce is my favorite drummer to ever play with Moz :guitar:

I was waiting for you to join in. :) I'll have to check out some of these I am not as familiar with the likes of Greg Lyons.
And I think Mike Joyce did progress quite a bit over the course of the Smith's career. Right at the begining you can tell he wasn't that experienced but I will give him credit for improving a lot. But he is not my favorite Moz drummer.

I found a much better appreciation for MJ once I started collecting bootleg Smiths DVDs..
Laguardia was from Southampton, PA so I went to see them live 40/50 times easily..He was my favorite drummer from the Philly area ever..They got signed to Universal and put out a record but have now split. ECC is a couple members from that band are signed and touring the world..Not as good as Laguardia in my opinion but Greg is so damn creative..he is a total drum hero and a friend..Once former member of ECC is now in Kasabian funny enough.
Oh yeah, I neglected to mention Stephen Perkins of Janes Addiction..of course Moon the Loon and Bonham top my list as well.
modrevolve April 24, 2008, 03:45 PM I would have put money on this thread being moved to "off topic" and not "other music". :)
Kewpie April 24, 2008, 04:08 PM No one hasn't mentioned My Bloody Valentine's drummer Colm O'Ciosoig!!
I saw MBV for the first time in June 1988 at a small venue in Shepherds Bush that was sensational.
He's undoubtedly the best drummer in his generations.
I admit Mike Joyce is as good as Colm.

As far as I know since late 1980s MBV kept steady line-up (Kevin, Belinda, Debbie and Colm).
Also did people realize many drummers had fairly short lives?
Billy Murcia (NYD)
Pete De Fraitas (Echo & The Bunnymen)
Ruzzle (Hanoi Rocks)
Cozzy Powell (White Snakes)
Apart from Murcia all three were killed road accident.
RIP.

Yes Rick Allen! I commend him for redesigning his kit to have lots of pedals etc so he could still play. What an amazing story of determination.

ALLIE WALLS April 24, 2008, 10:03 PM I loved the story relating to Fleetwoodmacs album Tusk. It was assumed by reviewers at the time that the title tusk referred to the ongoing problems with poachers in Africa but it turned out that it was an in joke referring to Mick Fleetwoods tusklike member lol

i've never been impressed much by drummers...but i can tell you two things that annoy the shit out of me:
1. drummers who are also lead singers
sorry, you can't do both
2. drummers who drum standing up
don't drum kits come with a stool? use it!
modrevolve April 25, 2008, 03:05 AM I always thought Boris Williams, former drummer of The Cure, was an excellent drummer.

Skinner April 30, 2008, 02:43 PM 1. drummers who are also lead singers
sorry, you can't do both
What about Francis Mark?
http://www.vater.com/artists/images/franmark.jpg
He started out as the drummer for From Autumn to Ashes who did backing vocals.
Then while writing their 3rd album the lead singer Ben suffered from intense writers block and only had about 3 songs on the album that he wrote, so Francis primarily sang lead vocals on the whole album.
Then Ben left the band, so Francis took over as lead singer and gave the drumming position to their new drummer Jeff Gretz who also now sings back up but is sadly not as great a drummer as Francis. Its funny how these things happen.
Anyway, if you are intreged but this, check them out www.fromautumntoashes.org

A failed drummer (Rainn Wilson) is given a second chance at fame. Robert "Fish" Fishman is the extremely dedicated and astoundingly passionate drummer for the eighties hair band Vesuvius, who is living the rock n' roll dream until he is unceremoniously kicked out of the band. Twenty years after his rock star fantasies are destroyed, just when Fish has finally given up all hope, he hears that his nephew's high school rock band A.D.D. is looking for a new drummer. They reluctantly make him the newest member of the band, giving him a chance to reclaim the rock God throne he's always thought he deserved, and taking the young band along for the ride of their lives.
Will Arnett is in it too –and Pete Best makes a cameo!

modrevolve May 14, 2009, 01:39 PM Being a drummer myself, I've not into guys for their technical prowess. Its more about the parts they bring to the songs like what Bryan Devendorf from The National or Sam Fogarino from Interpol are doing these days.
I'm not gonna lie, I saw Rush on the Roll the Bones, Counterparts, Test For Echo, Greatest Hits and Vapour Trails tours and back in the day when I was in High School I thought Neil was the shit. But by the end I was bored out of my mind and not feeling the music at all. Nowadays I'd rather listen to Mike Joyce's groove on Interesting Drug then Neil Peart's drum fills on Tom Sawyer. But that's just me :thumb:

Very true, but in saying that I dont think Rush would be the same without Peart,So the parts he brings, makes their sound,he actually writes the lyrics too.The band and their music are very technical, hell Lifeson and Lee are some of the most technical guitarists around and that's probably why it all fits nicely as RUSH,sometimes it's nice to hear technical perfection if only for the confirmation that it can be done,it also helps for future learning.
For me when I feel like listening to some heavy rock i will often throw on moving pictures ahead of anything else, but I admit it's been a while.

Claude Coleman
Absolute unknown drumming god. He's Ween's drummer, watched him do a 30min solo as part of a 3hr set they did last year. Just for some drumming awesomeness check out youtube clips of songs like "Man and Woman" and "Johnny on the spot" .. the guy is insane, switching between drumming while juggling his drumsticks, drumming with 3-4 sticks in each hand to going bare handed. I've read reports of a gig where he wouldn't stop during a drum solo so the rest of the band dismantled his kit during the show to stop him haha
