Does anyone else think that The Courteeners are really rather average?

All this fuss somehow reminds me of when our Moz was going about describing the Ordinary Boys as "fantastic".

Thanks for this. Their sound is good and so are the lyrics. Miles better than say the Cribs.

Personally though I just don't like the lead singers voice its not clear enough its the same thing for me listening to the artic monkeys or pete Doherty.

Their voices sound garbled and drunken. And no its not a northern thing!

Nahh it wasn't Morrissey's fault they didn't really do too well
it was the fact they were a terrible band. I think, Morrissey took a shine too them mainly because Preston is a copy of his dear self ... but a naf copy.

The Courteeners seem quite good though so I'm wishing them the best of luck :)

This bands prety cool. Theres a few "new indie" bands out but, Courteeners seem prety solid. I mean, half the songs on the new lp sound like Moz' "Sing Your Life/Rock-a-billy" phase, which is great. The singer, Liams' vox is prety fresh. Definitely worth a listen.
Got any of the Bsides?

The new single 'Not Nineteen Forever' is just indie by numbers, sound a good enough band though....anyone remember Northern Uproar?
To be honest as much as i love Morrissey he will champion bands if they happen to name him as an influence or use one of his song titles as a name perhaps...nobody can deny this surely?
Sons And Daughters are probably the best band he's had support him in recent years...they always mention the smiths as a big influence and covered 'pregnant for the last time'. Lot of ego massaging going on...always has been.

I first checked them out because there were a lot of comparisons to Oasis, but I think that was more about the attitude (and being from Manchester) rather then the tunes; I think they sound a bit like Kings of Leon. I think they're ok, I really like the song "What Took You So Long?"- I guess that's the one I know the best.
Thank you for those download links, I had been wanting to hear more by them!

Oh, they're on the cover of NME this week too if anyone cares:

I completely agree. I picked up both St. Jude and This Gift this week and Sons & Daughters are far and away the better band. This isn't to say that I don't like The Courteeners but they do sound to me like Liam Gallagher pretending to be him out of the Arctic Monkeys. I do like them! Honest!

I like Courteeners, and maybe it is a "manchesta" thing but, LF does tend to act very "Ladish" in the same way Liam Gallagher did when they first started out.
"Sons & Daughters" where they from? Any links to their stuff?

Sons & Daughters are an awesome band from sunny Glasgow and supported Morrissey in 2006, I believe.

Have been listening to this album all this week - I absolutely love it. Despite some weaker songs, on the whole it's a great album: definately above the accepted standard of NuIndie...

Loved his interview in NME this week too.

According to their myspace they've been added to the Hyde Park bill for the 4th. Been listening to their, largely excellent, album alot recently. In addition saw them at Leeds the other night and would recommend.

Just heard a few songs by 'The Courteeners', don't really think they're worthy of the hype. The singer has compared himself to Moz () and Moz likes them but...ugh. Not for me. I suppose Moz is keen because they have a song called "Smiths Disco" and they're from Manchester :guitar:

Hmm I do quite like The Couteeners, I saw them live recently and actually thought they were rather good; edgey Mancunians an' all.

BUT

I do think they're trying to be the new Libertines, the riffs are quite similar as are a few of their lyrics, in realtion to "real" issues with "real" people.

ALSO

In What took you so long the lyric; Do you know who I am, I'm like a Morrissey with some strings actually made me wince!

All said i rather like them, doubt they will have staying power though.

I think St. Jude is a really good album and I love The Courteeners and normally it takes me ages to find bands that I really like.

I'm going to see them at the Manchester Apollo next month and I've not seen them live before but I've heard they're pretty good.

You should get yourself over to Snorting & Cavorting (http://www.snortingandcavorting.com), it's my baby!!

I started the forum late 2007 after finding nothing about The Courteeners on the internet. Since then we have become the place to go for all things about the band - even the band are supporting us now :)

Quite a bit to download and loads of very friendly members who will help out if you can't find something.

I've just released artwork to house all the B-Sides from the singles released off St. Jude and I know a 'member' will be finding somewhere to host the tracks for it (we do try to keep official stuff away from the forum).

Sorry for the shameless plug but I'd love more US fans to join up :flowers:

Ive joined up a coupla weeks ago. Great forum. Easy to nav. Courteeners need to get plugged in the States more. With Indie 103.1 off the FM air in LA, that might be difficult. Only hope is Rod the Mod over at KROQ, however his show goes on I believe at 12midnight. This tour w/Moz will get them exposure with Smiths/moz fans, so when they set out for their own US tour all them fans will turn up.... I'm affeaid if Fry &Co. Want to make a dent in the US THEY NEED to whore it up and do tons of press. St Jude is excellent however it's "old" they need a new album or Ep.

that's my feeling too. saw them back in 2006, and that was my impression then as well.

I like Courteeners, and maybe it is a "manchesta" thing but, LF does tend to act very "Ladish" in the same way Liam Gallagher did when they first started out.

i think he sounds a bit laddish actually, both in terms of his voice and lyrically in a way; there is a directness and commoness in the lyrics that sort of point to that. i personally find it a little unimaginative. in that sense he's sort of the antithesis of morrissey's style.

You know what, I saw their performance at Morrissey's show in Houston and they are not half bad. I usually have a perception in my mind that the support acts are never really good, but these guys I do like.
