View Full Version : I Am Kloot.
CharlieFairhead March 11, 2008, 04:08 AM Any fans?
Great band and Mr Bramwell is a very gifted songwriter indeed.
Some of you more mature Moz fans in Manchester may have seen him in his early guise as Johnny Dangerously in the 80's/early 90's. He did a mini album which my brother had called 'You, me and the alarm clock' which is pretty impossible to find now..i remember it having some great songs too.
Here's an IAK track with a cameo from Christopher Eccleston.

Emotional Guide Dog March 11, 2008, 08:24 PM Now you're talking! I Am Kloot really are one of the best bands of the last ten years. Real quality songwriting & musicianship, good lyrics & they're a good laugh live too. Johnny Bramwell has a fine voice although he's sporting quite a dodgy haircut of late!
That Proof video is very good. Though it doesn't hurt that Proof is my favourite song of theirs.
If you get the chance, download (that's pay for then download) or get any of their four albums & you'll get the other three before too long.
Failing that, go & see them live.
snowfallsoon March 12, 2008, 12:03 PM I like 'To You' on Natural History alot, most of what I've heard I like...
prisoner77 March 12, 2008, 12:06 PM I see they are on tour too.
Jukebox Jury March 12, 2008, 12:12 PM Very underated, I saw them support Doves at Blackpool in 2004.
My favourite Johnny Dangerously track is 'Subway Life', even if it does take a swipe at Morrissey!
There is a line
And I look to your principles, you vote for the Queen, tell me what the hell is that supposed to mean?
The second time it is
And I look to your principles, you vote for James Dean, tell me what the hell is that supposed to mean.
Jukebox Jury
Shipwrecked Escapologist March 12, 2008, 01:08 PM Best band in the country simple as that really.
Been into them since Natural History. Seen them, plenty of times lastly at Sankey's in December.
The new album has got a very ' live ' feel to it.
Probably THE most laid band you will ever see live !!
Got tickets for the forthcoming Liverpool gig.
nickfd March 12, 2008, 01:13 PM I periodically post about looking up IAK, as I think there is a natural match between their music/lyrics and Moz. Lines like "You're like the clouds from my home town, just grew fat and hung around..." are genius. Agree that any one of the albums are great but would recommend either I Am Kloot (2nd album) or Moolah Rouge (5th album), latter is available from Townsend Records (advert on www.iamkloot.com from page). Get along to one of the gigs in April, they are truely unforgettable experiences, all three band members are very charismatic and now they are being joined by 2 or 3 others. **mops brow** that is all

Good to see some fans here.

P.S Any Johnny Dangerously mp3's kicking about?
Shipwrecked Escapologist March 12, 2008, 05:24 PM I went to a free gig in Manchester City Centre couple of summers ago - it was sponsored and broadcast by Channel M - it was available to view on their website. Not sure if it still is.
CharlieFairhead March 12, 2008, 06:11 PM Here's an old johnny dangerously song re-worked for an i am kloot b-side,

I was there too. It was in Cathedral Gardens. There was another band on called Answering Machine who were absolutely rotten. All I did was say, 'it's nice when they let kids out to play from the special school isn't it?'. How was I supposed to know it was the keyboard player's Mum?!
I don't get on with Channel M. That same summer there was a mini festival in Platt Fields too (which IAK also played at) but Channel M decided they were going to go along the front row interviewing crowd members all the way through Elbow's set. Channel M: 'Have you had a good time today? Who are your favourite band from today?' Me: 'Well it would be Elbow if you got out of the way & let me watch.'
That day also featured DJ sets from Andy Rourke (what a fraud, he just plugs his IMac into the decks!) during which an obsessive spent the whole time screaming, 'I love you!' at him. Everyone who DJ'd that day played '24 Hour Party People'. Badly Drawn Boy headlined: he came on, I went home.
The Cat's Mother March 27, 2008, 03:04 PM Well, I'd never heard of I Am Kloot before I read this thread. But I've had a listen and they seem rather good, so I've booked tickets to see them in Leeds. Thanks for the heads-up.

MadameChaos March 28, 2008, 03:17 PM I do like them. I was going to see them recently but forgot about it. DOH!
Cowshed March 30, 2008, 03:51 PM I do like them. I was going to see them recently but forgot about it. DOH!
I saw an ad in this month's Mojo saying they are playing Koko on the 22nd April, so you have no excuse from your Whitechapel home!
I actually went to get tickets myself and then realised I'm going to see Bjork help raise awareness about Cornish independence in Plymouth that night.
Truly Truly Truly March 30, 2008, 04:30 PM I love this band, they're great live too.
Same Deep Water As Me is one of those songs that deserves to be heard by absolutely everyone in the entire universe - animals, humans and idiots alike.
Michelle March 30, 2008, 04:50 PM I haven't seen Johnny in years, but remember his (very) early band Ignition playing in Manchester. I interviewed him / them for a fanzine once in 1985! Must try to get to see I Am Kloot soon.

About 5 years ago when I saw an ISP ad on TV which used a theme song of Les Vacances de Monsierur Hulot I had mixed feeling.
Good to see someone who had a very good taste, but found impossible to appreciate it. :(

John was taking requests (some of which he cheerfully refused), but there were a clutch of songs from the new album, plus a goodly batch of crowd-pleasers such as Twist, Proof, Favourite Sky, etc. He was also complaining about the lack of heckling so have your insults at the ready. It was a great gig; really laid-back like he'd just popped in to your house to give you a few songs. :)
CharlieFairhead April 18, 2009, 12:04 PM Sounds great Kate, any Johnny Dangerously popping up? Unlikely i know.

I've never got to hear any Johnny Dangerously, despite scouring the web for "You, Me and the Alarm Clock", so I'd probably not know it if it hit me. :(

Thanks. That's really kind of you. :) I'll check back for them after I get back from my parents' house - they're having a barbeque and my 79-year-old father is already a bit tipsy and is tap-dancing while belting out George Gershwin songs. He has a dicky heart so I'd better go and make sure he doesn't get out of hand.
Cosey Mo April 18, 2009, 02:01 PM Never heard of them, but i'll be the first customer in the record store on Monday; I just HAVE to know what they sound like. That band name is namely irresistably funny for a Dutch-speaking person. :lbf:

Hey, I should mention the first support at the IAK Solo gig at York. Young fellow-me-lad called Tom Reeve. Most engaging. And living proof that you can write entertaining songs about Napoleonic seige warfare and the immortal souls of dogs. Check him out on his MySpace:

The Cat's Mother April 20, 2009, 08:56 PM Just booked tix for the May 8th Solo gig in Derby. :)
EDIT: Btw, I registered on the IAK forums a few days ago, but I'm never yet been able to log in. Is anyone here already on that forum? I need to get in contact with a mod to get it sorted out, but the only mod with an email address on his/her profile hasn't answered my email. :(

The Cat's Mother May 9, 2009, 11:02 AM I'm seeing him on Saturday, let us know how it went..
It was a blast!
First time I've heard "Gods and Monsters" live. Lots of old faves and some new songs, but the great thing is, John's currently so request-friendly (bar those songs he can't perform without the band) that the set-list is pretty much fluid.
Lots of audience banter; John seems to really enjoy friendly heckling. :D
"Proof" was an all-out sing-a-long, and if you're (un)lucky on Saturday you might get treated to a curse-laden account of how John has just lost his driving licence.
I told John to get himself over to Hull. We'll see if he takes me up on it. :)
prisoner77 May 9, 2009, 11:28 AM Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the info..
klootfan June 17, 2009, 03:31 PM I've been looking for this for years, but the link seems to have expired. Is there any chance you'd be able to post this again ? I'd be forever in your debt.

The Cat's Mother September 18, 2009, 08:31 AM Stig, V and I saw them at the Deaf Institute in Manchester last night. Excellent gig in a tiny, intimate venue. Tonight and Saturday are sold out, but there's an extra date on Sunday if you can chase down a ticket. I bought their b-sides album while I was there.:thumb:

I had my eye on that too on Thursday. Asked about it on Monday at the Cherry Ghost gig they said it had disappeared !!
The Cat's Mother September 24, 2009, 12:20 PM You mean the one on the wall behind the bar? I asked after that, too, but they said they couldn't let it go until after the last gig and that the posters were for sale out on the stairs anyway. I prefer to snag these things for free, but it wasn't bad for a fiver, especially as it's signed by all the Kloots.
I'm listening to the B-sides album while I'm cleaning and it's a lovely distraction. That ethereal demo of Ferris Wheels is yummy. :)

Yes the one off the wall, I wrongly assumed you had claimed it !
I didnt see any for sale, damn ! I would have well paid for one. They only had a few of the new CD's out when I looked.
The B sides CD is a bit of a mixed bag to say the least , good value for £10 though.

"Pad"? You need a beret and a goatee, Charlie. ;)
I think the album is officially released the first week of next month.
Btw, I stumbled on some early stuff of John B's, when he was in a band called the deBuchias ( apologies if I've loused up the spelling of that). I can upload it if anyone's interested.

The merchandising was poorly advertised and positioned so people were hustled past it on the narrow stairs.
Some people were bitching about the sound quality on the IAK forum, but yes, I think there's a lot of interesting stuff there for a tenner. "Fat Kids in Photographs" is a good 'un and I like/dislike the Two Lone Swordsmen remix of "Gods and Monsters". The demo of "Proof" is dire; Bramwell sounds sloshed, although that's par for the course at some gigs. I prefer to see him start near-sober and then slowly marinate as the gig progesses. :D

'A beret and a goatee'..how dare you? Ha I'd rather lick Noel Edmonds's fanny beard.
Johnny Dangerously with deBuchias - Introducing Jane - 12" three track single (Village Records, 1990)
Johnny Dangerously solo - You, Me and the Alarm Clock 12? vinyl only six-track mini album (1988?)
The Mouth - Bang/Never On Time 7" (1995)
That's the one i want, have you got it tucked away in your bra?

Ach, no! I don't have that one. Indeed, if I had my cups might runneth over....
Have you asked on the IAK forum? One of the hardcore Klootheads might have it in their unmentionables.
@ Shipwrecked Escapologist: I was the brunette on the balcony sitting with the teenage blonde girl and the bloke with the beard. You're not the lady with the revealing neckline or the dancing bald bloke with the specs are you? Those two were giving it loads! :D

Well definately not a lady ! Bloke but thankfully not bald ( yet ) either, currently sporting a short spike ! Fairly near front centre I was with my fiance singing along enthusiastically for sure but not sure would be in the ' giving it loads' category ! IAK have been my fav band for a good number of years now , remains a mystery to me why they are not more succesful but at least we get to see them in such intimate surroundings.
