View Full Version : 2nd favourite band?

Don't try and be 'cool'! Who do you really like after them Smiths people? I adore The Divine Comedy. Hannon is 2nd only to Mozz on stage presence terms, in my opinion. Oh, and like our boy, he can make you both laugh and cry within seconds of each other too.

Bauhaus

Once I got over my Prince phase :p, the big three for me growing up were Bauhaus, The Smiths, and The Cure. In terms of all time favorite music Morrissey/The Smiths has now taken first place, Bauhaus is a firm second, and The Cure have dropped off the list completely. I think they've been replaced in the #3 spot by Joy Division..

ETA: Oooo this is my #666 post, saying that Bauhaus is my 2nd favorite band. How goth!

Yesterday and Today, which was a 1966 US-only compilation of tracks that had been pulled from Help, Rubber Soul, and Revolver. All of the Beatles' UK albums through 1966 (except A Hard Day's Night) had 14 songs, while their American counterparts usually had just 11. Capitol, their US label, had done a similar butchering with Beatles VI a year earlier.

More than you ever wanted to know about it (http://www.eskimo.com/~bpentium/whobutch.html). Maybe that already was!

Oh my Goth! That was my list from the first half of the '80s. Really, throw in Siouxsie and it's done.

The Cure lost me sometime around '85, when they got way too twee for me. Those early albums, though, "Boys Don't Cry/Three Imaginary Boys," "Faith," "Seventeen Seconds" and "Pornography" are good enough to keep them in my top ten (maybe even top five) forever. I lost Bauhaus somewhere along the way...

I used to go goo-goo-ga-ga for Suede and Gene but since they disbanded, I've lost about all interest. I've got all their recordings but I rarely listen to them anymore. I hate to admit it but Radiohead have piqued my interest lately and I used to not really care for them.

i love 'New Wave', and I think it's stupid that everyone craps on them now. sure, reinventing axl rose was/is classic, and there are a few kinda weak tracks on new wave, but overall, i think it's great, tom's songwriting is still totally there, the music is just a little different.

what do you want them to do, make the same record 10 times for the rest of their lives? you gotta evolve..

and as for me, i hate claiming favorite band, the smiths would make the top 10, but the primary contenders for the top spot would be dylan, social distortion, the replacements, bright eyes, bad religion.. those are probably the top five.

no don't worry! i'm happy to see that someone has interest enough in them to mention my post. i think that if they could choose, they wouldn't be touring with the foo. it's likely something done by sire to open them up to a broader fan base. which with the new album, seems to be their goal. they've toured in stadiums in support of 'searching for' and have played with bands like green day before so i guess it's not exactly something new.

but i am dissapointed with new wave completely. although i support them all of the way and the lyrics and the topics they sing about still reflect the mentality they had 10 years ago, the music just doesn't anymore. and i realize that bands change and their sound changes but i never thought when i first started listening to them i would hear the clean production and guitar solos within their songs. i know that they want to bring intelligence back into the punk scene and they seem to be doing just that based on the critical acclaim of the album, but they aren't the same band. i miss the time when they sang 'our arenas are just basements and bookstores across an underground america' and it still reflected their mentality. but of all the bands that deserve to make a living doing this, it's definitely them. maybe i'm just being too picky :p

I think, PIL were great in the 80ies - totally exploring new grounds - songs as poptones were pure brilliance

this interview is hilarious, reminds me of moz, but in a more cynical tone

The Libertines are probably on par with the Smiths, which isn't very cool, I suspect :p

to my credit, i've not listened to SP since 2007..

I've seen Morrissey, Enrique, Interpol, Snow Patrol live from my list, aswell..

i'd say my 2nd favourite band was Interpol, though

I love the brazilian band called Legião Urbana....
Their songs sound like The Smiths and Renato Russo (voice) loved Moz....

It's Legião song called Feedback song for a dying friend
Soothe young man sweating forehead
Touch the naked stem held hidden there
Safe in such dark hayseed
Wired nest

Then, his light brown eyes are quick
Once touch is what he thought was grip

This is not his hands
Those there but mine
And safe my hands
Do seek to gain
All knowledge of
My master's manly rain

The scented taste
That stills my tongue
Is wrong that set
But not undone

His fiery eyes
Can slash my savage skin
And force all seriousness away

He wades in close waters
Deep sleeps alter his senses
I must obey my only rival
He will command our twin revival

The same,
Insane
Sustain
Again

The two of us so close to our own hearts
I silenced and wrote this awe
Of the coincidence

Morrissey and The Smiths will always be "the" band I think it's safe to say for me, but R.E.M. are the band which run them second. I think in a similar way to The Smiths, they were a great four peice (now three),and each band member contributes equally which is a rare commodity it seems. I love Stipe's vocals and lyrics, Mike Mills is a great bass player while Peter Buck has a great style of simplicity in his guitar lines, yet they are so memorable.
