Vegetarian!

:D

I've decided to commit to becoming a vegetarian, and living a meat-free life. (I haven't got anything against those that eat meat, though. :) )

So do, you guys have any tips/suggestions to help me ease the transition?

Yep. :) It's only as hard as you make it. If you eat a lot of fast food, there's no reason to stop (yet!). Hit the bean burritoes at Taco Smell (though I suspect there's lard...unconfirmed on that one), veggie burgers at Burger King.
An easy dish to make is to get some stir-fry veggies from the freezer section and already cubed tofu from the produce fridge section. Throw those into a skillet with some garlic and soy sauce and serve over minute brown rice. Another easy one for home is bean & cheese tacos (fat free refried beans are your friend).
I'm sure others have a million and one ideas. Going veggie doesn't have to be difficult. good for you!

Best of luck to you. I haven't the stones to make such a radical change; if i had to go even a week without bacon, well, i don't want to know what i might do! :D

Go slowly, maybe just slowly ween yourself off of meat, eat less and less over the span of a couple weeks. The change will be so gradual that you will barely even notice!

Taco Bell doesn't use lard. You can also try their 7-layer burritos, but the guacamole is repulsive.

Hey Cassius,
good decision, you'll NEVER regret it.

have a good root around in PETA's GO VEG site, lots of good tips and recipes etc, people make out that its hard to live without meat, when in fact its actually easier, there are so many 'alternative' products out there. and as long as you arent just eating pasta/cheese then you'll do fine (if you are on this type of diet, then you were probaly just on a burgers/chips diet anyway)
http://www.goveg.com/index.aspx

oh and beware the sweet shop, lots of sweets/desserts have gelatine etc in them.

you may want to check out other, less militant groups than PETA for your information as well, I know 'runner's world' sometimes has articles on their website for veggie meals for runners which would definitely meet the nutritional requirements of normal people as well.

Ouuuuhh!! you should order PETA's free vegatarian starter kit, it's free if you are in the US or in Europe.

Cheese
A LOT! and i also recommend buying lots of condiments (soy sauce, chillies, basil, etc) so as to keep you dishes variated, tofu can become boring if you don't mix it with different stuff. Also, don't be afraid of trying new vegetables and fruits you have never tried before, just close you eyes and rememeber that at least you are NOT eating an animal.

Welcome!

Thanks guys. :)

I just ate a veggie burger, it was really good. I really didn't eat very much meat before, so it's not giving up too much now.

I'll only miss Wendy's chicken nuggets. BTW, what sweets have gellatin in them?

Many yogurt flavors do. I was pissed when I found that out... Frosted Mini Wheats have gelatin in the icing. You have to read labels. I don't eat many sweets anyway. I shop at Trader Joe's for most things, the good thing there is they don't have lots of filler ingredients. If something would logically not contain meat type products then it doesn't, and they clearly label soups and things if they have any meat stock in them.

But their version of Frosted Mini-Wheats contains gelatin, too. :(

I read that in India, there is a simple system for food labeling. It would be really nice if we could get a similar system going in the US- a green logo if an item is vegan, orange if it's vegetarian but not vegan. Something like that. They do it for Kosher foods.

That's another thing you can look for- if a food contains dairy and is designated Kosher, then it won't have any meat in it. But by the time you work that out you could just read the label.

I cook most things from scratch, so it's actually quite easy.

Congratulations!

Many candies have gelatin in them...I believe that PETA's website has a list of vegan candies on it that you can check out.

A good resource for you would be Vegetarian Times magazine (I believe that their website is just "vegetariantimes.com"). I have gotten several good recipes from them.

You will have to become a good label reader. As has been said before, stay away from gelatin. Some types of cheese are made with rennet, which is derived from animal stomach lining.

I love Vegetarian Times... great recipes, some vegan, some not. The articles and philosophy come from a perspective that acknowledges that people choose not to eat meat or animal products for a variety of reasons. So it's an easier approach than PETA sometimes takes. They also publish great cookbooks...

oh, and they seem to be going through a rebranding- I've seen the same magazine sold as "Greens" and "Vegetarian Times."

I would love to write for them... hmmm.... must write some queries.

Good for you!!

You will never regret it.....there is a million and one alternatives to meat and they don`t even have to include nuts or lettuce!!

Veggie Bolognese (have mushrooms/cougettes/peppers instead)

Veggie chilli

Veggie pie

Omeletes

Veggie curries

Quorn is good for protein as is Tofu. Its what you add to it that makes it taste nice.

Good luck.

Cheese..cheese..cheeeese...i bet they have great vegetarian cheese in the US (they even do some decent stuff over here in bratwurst country).

Also Tofu can be good when it's prepared nicely (by me).

If it has to be the fast food option I go for falafel, a veggie burger or veggie kebabs with loads of garlic sauce (or plain chips w/ketchup and a garden salad, or onion rings).

Getting hungry now....

Cassius, that is very commendable that you are becoming a vegetarian! I want to do it but, I am afraid that I would slip up to much!

Cassius
November 7, 2007, 04:45 PM
Why ?

Many reasons. It's easier to keep kosher, for one. (Something I haven't been very good at keeping and really need to work on.)

I could go on about cruelty to animals, but I don't want to seem self-righteous, and no one really wants to hear it.

Who do you think won: the developers of sophisticated, violent first-person shooters ("Halo" I was in the works at the time), or the artists & trivia nerds who came up with the zany comedy of "You Don't Know Jack"?

Hint: the loser sold out to Micro$oft a year or two later.

Hi all

I am considering turning vegie, temporarily as an experiment. I need some advice and knowledge on a number of things. In order to get the best advise and answers from you all i think i need to give you this info:

1) I am a student, and have very little money. My budget for food is barely a tenner a week at times.

2) The shops nearby are

- Farmers Market
- SPAR
- Iceland
- Newsagents

3) I WILL NOT be doing vegan.

So, info i need from you. Cheap, easy, tasty dishes that would compensate for my meat cravings (which i guarantee you i will get. I am craving meat even talking about it now, that is how much i love meat)

I stress that i do not know if i will do this yet, but even if i don't do it now i may in later stages of life. so your imput would be appretiated.

Many thanks

I've been vegetarian for about 8 months now which isn't very long compared to most here. I find that Vegetarianism doesn't really cost much more and I really don't crave meat what so ever anymore. I find myself eating a lot of different ethnic foods. I know you're on a budget so you'll probably be cooking yourself, but when you eat out it's pretty easy to get dishes that are enjoyable without the meat or with something in meats place(ie: beans instead of meat on a taco). All I can say really is go for it. I know some people on here will probably have some more profound things to add.

I don't mean this to be in any way disrespectful, but you're thinking WAY too hard about this! :D

"Going veggie" or however you want to say it is really not hard at all. It's not worth anywhere near the amount of discussion that a few people were putting into it on the other thread trying to convince you to do it. I think some proselytizing vegetarians make everyone else think it's SUCH A BIG DEAL TO STOP EATING MEAT OMG!!! that no wonder more people don't do it b/c they get totally turned off by the people trying to convince them. It's not like you have to join some cult or change your entire way of life.

Assuming you didn't live on steak 3x a day, you just have what you had before but leave the meat out. For example, if you ate pizza, just order pizza with no meat. Leave the meat sauce off the pasta and have marinara or pesto. Leave the meat off sandwiches - veggies and cheese only. If you love burgers, try veggie burgers. They do taste good depending on how they are prepared, but they are usually pretty expensive, unfortunately. As long as you stick to simple stuff there's no reason why it would cost more, and I found it cost much much less than a diet with lots of meat in it. Where I live it's always easy to find good fruits and veggies but that may not be the case where you are. The main concern is to make sure you're not living off junk food. ;)

Good luck! :)

EDIT: Oh, and btw I lived off meat... I probably did have it 3x a day until around 2 years ago. I thought I loved it, but honestly it was a huge relief when I started the process of removing it from my diet, b/c I didn't have to feel pangs of guilt when I looked at my dogs, cats, horse, etc. anymore. I didn't have to worry as much about how my food was cooked (you know how there's nothing more gross in the world than meat that isn't cooked properly). I almost never had cravings, but I didn't think about it in terms of "quitting" in the same sense you'd quit smoking. Your body isn't literally addicted to it. If you smell a burger or a steak and it makes you hungry, then eat a veggie burger with chips. I swear if it's a decent veggie burger and you put the same things on it you'd put on a meat burger, you will hardly notice the difference. It's not like you're starving yourself, you're just not eating exactly the same things you did before.

I went veg in November, saw the film "Fast Food Nation" and gave up meat that very afternoon. Finding stuff with those little hidden ingredients (ie gelatin) has been the hardest, although the transition has really been pretty easy in general. Not as difficult as I thought it would be.

My dilemma is, though, what about medications that contain gelatin? I take a prescribed med (9 capsules a day) that has gelatin as an ingredient. I guess I shouldn't feel bad, it's my health after all, but still, it's a little weird.

Quorn is still around. They sell loads of it at the Tesco here and we had some last week(the chicken pieces) in some pasta and it was very good. And Tesco has tons of other veg products now whether it be soy, tofu, gluten, etc. I prefer some of the stuff at Waitrose a bit better, but it's often a bit more expensive.
