View Full Version : Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - 12" extended version
Stephane
February 8, 2008, 12:45 AM
A fellow fan has just pointed out to me that his 12" copy of the "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" single has a longer version than the 7" , "Hatful Of Hollow" and "Louder Than Bombs". The difference is found at the end where there's an additional repeat of the "In my life..." verse. In total this version is 3:55 instead of 3:34.
Now this is a surprise to me because, not only have I never noticed this myself (but then I haven't listened to my vinyl in 20 years), but also nobody else has ever mentioned this. Even Godard doesn't seem to be aware.
The question now is: is this on every 12" copy of this single? I can't check my own copies because a few years ago my turntable left me for a better world and I never felt the need to buy a new one.
Could any of you check their copies and let me know what they have, and what edition of the 12" they're checking?
thanks!
Stephane

I just checked mine, UK RTT 156:
http://www.songsthatmadeyousmile.com/smiths/images/1984_heaven12_1.jpghttp://www.songsthatmadeyousmile.com/smiths/images/1984_heaven12_2.jpg
It's the same version as my cd RTT 156CD and 7" RT 156.
They are all 3:34 here.

i'll check mine in a bit. i have the UK 12".... RTT 156. i think mine is the normal, but hopefully i'm wrong.
i do remember hearing about the extended version on a test presing a while back over in the Collector's Corner forum. i'll let you know my findings.
did this person say which edition of the 12" they got it from? also, do they happen to be have it ripped to mp3?! :):):)
EDIT: Unfortunately, it seems I only have the normal edition :( it seems i'll be buying more copies of the 12" :)

By the way you'll have to play the record to find out. Either way the label says 3:34.

Yeah, I played mine.... I played the 12" and the 7". Both 3:34.
The thing is, the labels on my 12" and 7" don't say how long the track is. Neither the labels nor the sleeves.
The label on the 12" say how long Girl Afraid and Suffer Little Children are, but there is nothing on side A.

Flavio,
The timing should be on the right side of the label, under 'Side A' and '45 RPM'.
Meanwhile in an archive of information I'm saving for possible future use on "Passions Just Like Mine" I have found the existence of a 7" test pressing with a longer version of "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now". The tp has a full center (not a push-out one) and is marked RT 156 A-1U-1-1
I'm guessing this might be the same longer version.

Unfortunately I can't check my copy since it's three thousand miles away right now but I believe I had a vinyl version of the "long" mix. I can't say for sure though. I know I've heard the long version somewhere or other. It's not that exciting, really, other than the "holy shit" moment when the familiar veers into the unfamiliar.
What was exciting was my Rough Trade 12" of "Heaven", which seemed to be a louder, sharper, more vivid mix of the song. Again, I wouldn't claim this with my hand on the Koran, but I could swear it was a slightly different mix, almost as if it were remastered. Don't quote me on that.

Yes, you're right... I just got home from a trip and checked the label. It says 3:34... and as I said, I played it and it is in fact 3:34.
That's the only Heaven 12" I have... Did you figure out where the long version is?

That's because the subject is not about morrissey using and old photo on the cover or how the tracklist isn't that great.
Let's change the title to "Viv's picture on Heaven 12-inch is too old" or "Heaven 12-inch tracklist sucks" :)

I've dug out 3 copies of RTT156 each of them say 3.43.
They are all etched RTT 156 A 2.
So is there a point to me getting me stop watch out & playing them?
Stephane is it a white label only pressing that plays the extra bit?

BlueCityBoy sold one on eBay for over £1000. The dozy sod didn't have chance to record it before it went though - I know him and could have done it, but I didn't see the posts until it had gone :(
So, please, copy it and let us all hear.
PS: Just realised that your copy has the matrix number RT 156 A-1U-1-1 whereas BCB's was RT 156 A1U-1-1-1 (with an extra "1") he thought his was a one-off. Please, if you can, copy it and post it :)

BUMP - to keep this thread alive.
Not sure who else might have this very rare single in their collection - please look - but is there any chance that Stephane (or your mate) could copy it and share?
From the previous thread a lot of regulars on this forum wanted copies - it could be a very special find.
I don't expect it right now (knowing how precise you are you probably want to get the edit just right), but at least let us know whether you are planning to do it or not - not sure if that will affect the price of such an item or not - presumably BCB got £1000+ for his copy because no one thought another copy existed.

I've just got around to checking my copy of HKIMN 12", and Not Right in the Head is pretty much correct. The extended version is on RTT 156 A1. I know because that is the version I've got. Everything else is exactly the same compared with Passions.
I've calmed down a little bit after finding it! :) :) :) :) (But still feel like jumping for joy! I don't think my Dad quite understood as he had the misfortune of calling me just as I found out!)
I would upload it, but I don't have any means of ripping a record - apologies, I would if I could!

Sorry I've been away from an internet connection for over 2 days now. I do have a mp3 of the extended version, I will put it up in the download section in a few days after I've caught up with other stuff I need to do.
As for something else someone asked in this thread, this version is only commercially available on 12"s. And since I started the thread we've pretty much confirmed that the version is only available on the very first pressing of the 12", numbered RTT156 A1 between side A's run out grooves. The label will still say the timing is 3:34 because this is *not* an extended version. It is longer than the version we're all familiar with, but never meant to be a 12" version, and apparently not meant to be released. Its pressing was accidental. The version was first pressed on a 7" test pressing but plans were changed and the 3:34 version was finally adopted for release, except on this accidental first batch of 12"s.

I've had this file since '99, downloaded from the original Napster, though I've updated the ID tag with lyrics and art.
The hiss and hicups on the track verify a vinyl source, the running time is 4:44. That's all I knew of this file for almost a decade... until I came about this lovely thread ;)

I guess we still don't know anything about the track you've uploaded, because the longer version Stephane was talking about is something completely different. Or did I miss anything?
His version is longer in the end, yours has a longer intro and a longer middle part and seems to be mixed differently. Very strange ...

There are tons of those on the internet. Not so much for the Smiths or Morrissey, but if you collected Depeche Mode, New Order or the Pet Shop Boys or I guess artists such as Madonna and all the dance stuff, it would be difficult to stay informed on what's official and what's not. With all the software available today you can go much further than just cut and paste like it used to be.

I'm still not entirely convinced that it's fake. It sounds perfectly edited to me, could some amateur have done this ten years ago? And why would he have used a vinyl sourced version of that song? It would have made much more sense to rip it from a CD, since the sound would have been much better. Or was it to pretend that it's some lost vinyl promo version? Maybe it is? Nobody knew about the extended version that Stephane has discovered, so why shouldn't there be another rare item that got lost somehow?
