I'd like to know because I am vegetarian.

No, it makes you a better person, because you've chosen to avoid needless killing of animals on your behalf. *ducking and hiding, debate is sure to follow*

Oh, and you likely smell better. :D

No.
I think the same applies here.

I think it does in the sense that you are closer to something that obviously means something very fundamental to Moz. It probably makes you a more aware person too.

But i'm not sure it makes you a better person.

No, actually it isn't. I've found that not only does meat stink like something dead, my family members who eat meat smell more strongly than they seemed to before.

I'm glad you asked, I was afraid to.

Not very long. I became vegetarian after seeing a film about bad treatment of animals on google video. I am not a vegan because I eat a lot of cereal and I like to pour milk on my cereals.

Me either, that's another big adjustment to make and my family still eats meat, so it's enough of a struggle keeping it out of the house as much as possible. I can't stand the smell at all.

But i'm not sure it makes you a better person.

I tried being a vegetarian after the New Year, so in January - my conclusion: veggie food is gross.
And bare in mind I'm saying that as someone who WANTED to like it.

I was born and raised eating meat and frankly I think it's delicious. Try as I might, I just can't square it morally.
Unfortunately, much as I'd like to say that I'm going to be a strong moral person and NOT eat meat I can't.
I like my food too much, and meat is delicious.

I'm practically perfect in every other way though! ;)

As for it making you a better fan: much like the Bible, Morrissey says a lot of sensible things but a lot of very dumb things too (nothing quite as awful as the Bible, mind).
If you're a veggie just 'coz Morrissey says so, that's quite odd.

I don't think Morrissey would either. But I get the impression, other than my deep and true connection to his MUSIC (for let's not forget he's a singer, not a Saint) we wouldn't get along in any way.

No, you're right, it didn't.
I tried it for a month and while I felt very smug about it I soon realised that I was just back to eating chocolate and crisps because salads (which aren't cheap in this part of London) and veggie-alternative foods just don't taste nice to me.
And that is a lot to give up: enjoying meals forever more.

I think there are slightly more important things to worry about in this world, don't you? Though this is neither the time or place to discuss them.

I think Morrissey is a wonderful lyricist and singer (the best), a kind and compassionate soul, an extremely intelligent man.

I agree whole-heartedly. We shouldn't be judged a 'bad person' for eating meat! What the heck it that about! It's more cruel to let a lump of steak be thrown away in the bin to rot amongst condoms and bog roll on a land fill site. Thus, vegetarians should eat all the left-over meat to stop it from rotting a horrible death :-D

And yea, maybe it does make us closer to Morrissey if we were vegetarian, but certainly not a BETTER fan

If you think carnivores are the most evil thing in the world then there is obviously no reasoning with you.

I have stated my case:

- a veggie lifestyle is not for me, and while it left me morally quite smug (which is an area you seem comfortable inhabiting;)) it also left me starving hungry and miserable.
- I did not try to become a veggie for Moz. I stand by that being odd.

Meat is not murder.

What is murder is the commodification of creatures' lives, and the complete lack of respect for their feelings- and even their dignity. Factory farming is a low in human civilization.

I dont believe killing an animal is murder, becuase, again, as a Christian, i believe God put animals on the earth to feed and clothe us. They are there to give us part of our diet and nutrition. There are vegetarian alternatives for a human diet, but NOTHING in vegetarian food gives us what meat gives us, i can't remmber the vitamin or chemical, but there is one element of it that is really important for us as humans to have.

Anyone who tries to argue that Morrissey wouldn't like or respect you just because you eat meat is an idiot.

There are vegetarian alternatives for a human diet, but NOTHING in vegetarian food gives us what meat gives us, i can't remmber the vitamin or chemical, but there is one element of it that is really important for us as humans to have.

I thought God put Mommies on the earth to feed and clothe us.

Religious people only pretend to be nice so that they will be rewarded in heaven. They only do it to impress god.

You're jumping from controversy to controversy.

I think people are religious, in part, out of fear. Psychologically, it's a way of being taken care of- parented, almost. It's a deep-seated need most people have. I don't.

The best decision for everyone is to stop eating meat.

Not for me due health reasons. I have tried going veggie and the severe reactive hypoglycemia always comes back with a vengeance. I ate healthy whole foods, not the junk foods by the way. I'm not living with spiking blood sugar, migraine headaches, mood swings, serious depression and a myriad of other problems. Before you go off on me, I have studied nutrition, and worked with two PhD. dietitians while in college. People with severe reactive hypoglycemia, like me, need more protein, very few carbohydrates and a sufficient amount of healthy fats.

Like I said, each person should gather all information available, weed out the propaganda, listen to their own bodies and use that as a means of making an informed decision.

You have just generalised an entire group of people, including myself. You havent even bothered to ask ME how i believe in God or about being nice. I do not PRETEND to be nice, i try and be as nice as everybody else. I make mistakes like everybody else. I love and hurt like everybody else. @ dizzywhore_1804 - Thank you.

Meat is Murder came out in 1985 and i didn't give up until 1993 and i think it's important to take on board what others say but it's more important not to be a follower and decide what to do after you've thought it through. Independence of mind is very important these days.

I'll keep the bacon roll for my death bed along with Two sisters, (not MY sisters) a shemale, a dead budgie that died from natural causes and a concoction of drugs that would make Pete Docherty faint at the mere suggestion!

I like cheese. I didn't realize that male calves were killed so I could have a quesadilla.

But the other day I was out of cheese, and I grilled a tortilla and put avacado instead of cheese, and it was great. I also put some sprouts and salsa.

Since I switched from coffee to tea I don't use much milk, because I don't like tea with milk. But I don't know what to put on my cheerios. One day I was out of milk and I just ate cheerios dry with my tea, but they were a little rough going down.

I've never tried soy milk. But then I read that they are clearing the rainforest to grow soy. Where does it stop?

I put honey in my tea and I wonder if bees are exploited. It seems like it would be hard to exploit a bee, but I don't know.

I still find things tough, and i still make mistakes. I haven't grown a new body or grown wings. I'm just me, and i always TRY an be a nice person. A lie is a lie is a lie...

well, I was just playing about fairytales. I think that religion is a way to understand our place in the universe and it's different for different people. I don't consider it a fairytale though. I think there is a greater truth in a lot of mythology, but that very complex ideas are simplified so that we can grasp them.

I think religion is used to tell lies, but I don't think being religious means believing a lie.

the idea of caring about animals is a religious idea, but that's just my opinion. I think ethics and morality are connected to religion or spiritual beliefs. otherwise, who cares if something or someone else suffers? we care because we are all part of something greater. in my opinion.

I keep seeing all these "faux-meat" products. I just bought some non-meat meatballs at Trader Joe's, I figured once they are slathered in marinara, my kids won't know the difference. But I'm a little conflicted about buying products meant to imitate meat. Why would I want to pretend I'm eating meat?

THAT i can never agree with. A human is worth a MILLION times more than any animal. Yea, we should protect our animals, and if i was asked to nurse a poorly one, i would do so in an instant, but if i were to hear of a dying child at the same time, i'm over to the dying child in a second. Why? Animals aren't destroying the earth and killing each other over nothing but stupid grudges. Animals only kill what they actually need to survive. The earth would be so much better off without us... and the thing is, we should know better. I can't tell you how many people I know who, when I tell them I'm vegetarian, say things like, "I know I shouldn't eat meat, but... I just try not to think about the animals." I thought that way for a long time myself, until I realized that if I had a belief, I needed to stand up for it. People just draw this imaginary, completely arbitrary line between themselves and non-human animals, and call it murder on one side and food on the other.

Yea, we should protect our animals, and if i was asked to nurse a poorly one, i would do so in an instant, but if i were to hear of a dying child at the same time, i'm over to the dying child in a second. Not cos i'm a great person particularly, but cos it's a human, and so am i.

It's a troll, pet.

I like animals more than humans.

OK, question for the vegetarians...

Do you eat these "fakes?" What do you think of them?

They can be a good substitute for people who may get those old cravings for something with the texture or taste of meat and are good for many people who just became vegetarian/vegan. I have a few vegan restaurants near me which have excellent faux meat products like chicken fingers with ranch dressing, theyre soo tasty! But I've been vegan for a few years now and I've strayed away from those products - too much wheat and soy protein. I'll have it sometimes when I go out to eat. However, many meat eaters who Ive taken to these restaurants are weirded out by the fact that these products are sometimes called meat, even though they may be labelled as "chicken" or "beef" with the apostrophes like that. But i think its ok because it just gives you an idea of what its kind of "supposed" to be you know?

But its kind of funny because Ive taken a few meat eating friends to these places and a few of them didn't know it was an all vegan place and ordered orange chicken and they didnt believe me when i said its not real chicken!

PS: how did the kids react to the "meat balls"? :D

Why do you look down on animals as if they are inferior. They are not. I like animals more than humans.

They are inferior, cos they dont have a soul. But here we go again on the whole religious thing. It's my belief, and that's just it. I beleive we have a soul that goes to heaven. i believe animals have a 'spirit' which is what animates them, but not a soul. I believe we were made by God in his image, and animals aren't. Is just my belief.

A friend of mine cant eat meat cos she used to have a form of guillem barrie. She cant digest meat. She likes these products cos she misses meat, but for vegetarians who are vegetarians out of choice, yea, a bit wierd i'd say to PRETEND to be eating meat. Really good point. Hadn't thought of that.

Yeah, it's just really strange to see fake bacon on the store shelves. I don't want to eat bacon, and I don't want to eat fake bacon. Veggie burgers and black bean burgers are good, though. They're actually tastier than beef.

dom
February 7, 2008, 01:22 AM

As far as i know, a child (which was the type of human i was refering to helping) has never destroyed the earth or killed someone. lol ;-) A choice between a sick animal or a sick child is not a hard decision for me to make at all. The child, every time, every second.

Well just because youre vegetarian or vegan doesnt mean you are because you dont like meat. I know many veggies/vegans who love the taste of meat (of course, after its been seasoned and all the good stuff) but dont eat if for sake of the animals and other beliefs. So i think the substitutes are great for those who want them. Plus, it makes it easier when asked "So what do you eat??":confused: :p

same as you. I do like veggie burgers a lot and they were introduced to me as a "substitute". I don't really pretend I'm having a hamburger when I have one though. It's just a good tasty spicy sandwich.

But products that imitate meat, like those weird crab
legs and things like tofurkey, I think are really strange and I don't eat them. If your kids like it I think it's fine though. It adds flavor and texture to your meal. I just eat spaghetti with different types of veggie sauces, and I eat it quite a bit, and like it, so I know the faux-meatballs aren't necessary but I don't see any harm, especially since it's keeping your kids happy.

So anyway, I've had a child die, and I've had pets die, and if I were faced with Sophie's choice, I'd choose my child. But that's as it should be, and that would never happen anyway. That's it, that's the story. There are more details, but I'm not going into them.

Moz is cool and sings great songs. His vegetarianism makes no difference in his quality of song writing, only in the content.
