That bloody vista OS, nowt but bad blood, sorry Dave, have you thought about flogging your 2 x 250gb hardies for a single 500gb drive?
Good Luck

First see if the HD in question is in the BIOS. If not, it's either a bad connection or it's going dead on you.
Does it give you an OS choice menu similar to this when you start up?

If it's going to the wrong one, right click My Computer and click properties. The go to the Advanced tab and click Settings on Startup and Recovery. You'll see a dropdown on Default operating system. Choose the other one that it gives you, you can also set the timer to a lower number.

That will at least get you to boot without having to choose each time.
If the drive does show up as good and you can't see it in Windows, try booting to an Ubuntu disk and look at the files from that. You should be able to copy them to a USB drive from there.
What the hell am I doing? I'm about to go do this for 9 hours, and I'm on here "working". I'm supposed to be reading about Paris! And Fairmount!
:)
Hope that helps some.

Dave, that is quite a problem you have there. That easily trumps any and all of my previous Windows troubles.
I think you ought to try joey's suggestion since he sounds pretty knowledgeable but I'll add this-- when I had problems with my OS and bad hard drives I bought a new one on which I did a fresh install of XP, then I installed the old one as a slave and was able to move the data on the old drive to the new one. Then I trashed the old drive and bought a new #2 drive.
Of course, the old drive showed up in My Computer, which maybe yours doesn't.
Possibly a wasteful and inelegant solution, but usually I think the Gordian knot solutions are easiest with PCs.

Tha master slave thing is dopwn to which of the two cables you are using - Sounds like you have SATA drives from your description. Should not make too much diference what is installed where but you need to set up as per instructions from Joey.
I would be tempted to put the drives back in the order they were origonally in. See what loads and what does not. Swapping them probably upset windows.
If youget them working again......... For £50 or less you can get an external hard drive - USB - coppy all your stuff to that then reformat - you don't have a faulty drive, just faulty software!
Let us know how far you get.

If you connect an external harddrive to your computer and run it under that computer... what happens if you merely detatch it and plug it into a different computer using the latest operating system?

i'm glad somebody bumped this thread. i looked for it a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't remember what it was called.
my washing machine isn't working properly (at least, i don't think it is). it's going, okay, but the washing powder and fabric conditioner don't seem to be going through to the drum. effectively, it's just rinsing the clothes with water. it's a problem that seems to recur every time i try to use the tumble dryer. can anybody offer some technical advice?

Have you checked your filter? It may be broken. That happened to my mom's once.

You'll break the Internet.
