Do you really love Morrissey?
Do you actually have feelings for him and why?

I love his music...his lyrics..., but do I love him? No. I love my friends, family, my wife, and my son. It's always great to admire and look up to an icon, but to LOVE someone you will never know, and more than likely never even hold a conversation with, is a bit bizarre for me to wrap my arms around (Paris).

I love the music. Stops there. As Flaubert said, "One must not touch one's idols. The gilt always comes off on one's fingers". On this point Morrissey would no doubt agree, having once as an adolescent taken great pains to be in the same room as Patti Smith only to witness her farting with reckless abandon.

not in a romantic or sexual way... but other than that, i definitely love him. he's given me so much and helped me through so many seemingly unbearable situations in life, just through his music and his words, and in some ways he has given me more than a lot of people i, obviously unlike moz, actually know personally... even if that's not meant to belittle my relationships to those people.

I don't think I would go that far. I wouldn't say he's influenced my life. Has he made it richer and happier? He definitely has. And thanks to him, I've "met" some extremely nice and interesting people, even though only virtually. Do I care for him? Of course. But I couldn't mention one thing I've changed or would change about my life because of him. (Okay, if he asked my hand, I would seriously consider the offer.... :o)

this is a difficult one. for me, morrissey's music is something which touches the deepest recesses of my soul. it expresses those things which i cannot. it makes me wail with saddness and scream with joy. it's true life but also my wildest dreams all rolled into one. and i think because of that, the man who created such wonderful, amazing, mind-blowingly beautiful music holds a sacred place in my heart. whether that's love i don't know, but it might be the nearest thing to it.

I do have feelings for him. It's those kind of desperate feelings where I would just want to meet him, where I think of him all the time, and where I would want him to notice me! You know, like a crush. I admire the way he thinks so differently! I love people like that, who dont conform. anddd I also think he's so very handsome. so yes, I do love Morrissey.

I love him. It's the greatest love I've known, and I don't think love for any "real" person could even compare. When I say real I mean reachable, here, at hand. Nothing could even come close, so why settling for less?
Once you've known this much love you can't settle for less.

I get you, but I'm not sure that's a very obvious feeling. Why would you depreciate yourself so much? Don't you feel worthy of loving? Or is it only his loving you're not worthy of? Sorry for putting these questions, you don't have to answer them if you don't want to, they just popped into my mind.
I just want him to be happy, with whoever it is. (If it is with me, I really don't mind. ;))

Don't worry, since I stopped having a problem talking about it I've felt relieved. I feel it's my right to love and I love Morrissey. Nobody is to say it's not love just because I don't know the man.
But being loved? I wouldn't believe it or understand it.
People who've met me have been curious and in a couple of cases, obsessed, but those people are always people I wouldn't pay any attention to.

Absolutely not. The notion is quite nonsensical, actually. He's someone that I've never met, probably never will meet, and I certainly won't have the opportunity even to befriend, let alone be close enough friends to consider him someone whom I love. How can anyone love something, or someone, in circumstances like that?

I don't know. I don't think I actually know him. Maybe I do know him. Maybe the words are all true and that is who he is. And maybe he is entirely different than his words would lead you to believe. The mystery is fun to contemplate.
I would like to meet him. I don't think I'd be starstruck and tongue tied, I'm not like that. He could be really wonderful, or he could be a massive asshole. But only after finding out for myself would I be able to say how I actually felt about Morrissey the guy, rather than Morrissey the body of lyrics.
So, do I love him? No, certainly not. I'm very fond of the idea of him, though.

This is probably the most interesting thread in months and I've got to read some really beautiful statements, especially resolveme's...
It's difficult to make the difference because he inspires so many feelings in me. But I can definitively say that ever since he came into my life, he changed it totally and positively... I cannot live a single day without listening to his music and not a single day passes by without thinking of him, imagining the day he comes back to a show in Santiago and wondering somethimes where he is or what a man like him could be doing right now, like in playful way.
He's definitively a huge crush, my biggest one... He's the most attractive man on Earth to me.
But I think I'd feel nothing of the above if he hadn't the marvelous velvety voice he has or if he wasn't a master of lyrics and poetry... I usually wonder how does he come up with such wonderful and true lines... I feel identified with his feelings and his wiew of life and this world... I would love to become his friend and, puting aside the desire for physical contact, what I would love the most it would be having a honest and sincere heartfelt conversation with him at the most unexpected time or place... Spend a whole evening talking with him, that would be heaven... Yes... After all this, I love him... Definitively...

I thought I loved him because of the deep impact he's had on my life and the formation of my personality... and because when I was a teenager trying to cope with abuse and abandonment, his music was there for me.
I wasn't certain that I loved him until I (loosely) followed his last tour and had several chances to interact with him personally (without actually getting to speak with him). It's amazing how quickly he established a relationship with me. I realize he does this with all the front row types, not just me... but it's still really impressive. His large personality could be felt even at this distance. He even managed to be an ass to me at one point, then he felt bad about it and made it up to me later on.
When it was all over and I was back home, I realized that my love for him is very real. Unconditional, even. His influence on my life has been enormous. I just care for him like he's family.
Even as I type this I have a warm feeling in my heart.

Definitively...
yeah i agreee

No and Yes
No: I feel great affection, infinite respect, gratitude and, yes, lust for The Man, but love, real love, is an entirely different thing.
Yes: As far as artistic love goes, which is one of the most important and sacred kinds of love there is to me. I love him the way I love Oscar Wilde, or Jock Soto, or Charlotte Bronte, or Edward Gorey, or Jean Tinguely, or W. G. Sebald, or David Lynch, or any number of glorious eccentrics who have changed and enhanced the way I see the world.
Morrissey is different, however, because he gave me back something that I had lost. He is also seductive, and his physical presence is pleasurable in an almost overwealming way (although seeing Jock Soto dance over the years has been one of life's great joys).
Morrissey's voice is essential to me, and I use him as a touchstone, but that is as far as it goes (which is far enough for me).

A lot of people are responding that they aren't "in love" with Morrissey. That wasn't the question, was it? I mean, no... I'm not "in love" with him, but I do love him.
There are so many ways one can love another that it shocks me that more of the responses here aren't affirmative.
I love people based on what they mean to me and what kind of impact they've had on my life. I have family members who are horrible people and I am supposed to love them anyway simply because we are related. Well, I don't. It's considered silly to love a pop star, but what if the pop star has given you reason to love him time and time again?

the words to "Lighten Up, Morrissey" sum it all up for me...! I was speechless with delight when I heard that song. Morrissey's on a pedastal that nobody else will be able to reach. He's done more for me than anyone else. I feel like I can't repay him enough with my adoration and I think this is why he ignites such love and passion in people. Because this man who you've never met cares about you in such an intense way. How many lives have his words saved? And how can you possibly repay that. Ahhhhhh Morrissey.
So in an entirely selfish way, yes, I do love him.

He's prompted me to truly be aware of the finer things in life (not wealth) poets, authors, MUSIC, I could go on and on. He *spoke* to me in 1984 and it has not stopped yet. I think, like most of us here, he speaks to us in a way others will never be able to understand. And I love him for it. And he could be a total bastard in his private life, but he's only human.

Of course he's not like anybody else; everyone's unique etc etc etc. But you can't justify an irrational love for someone just because they're "unique".
And, if you think about it objectively, did he really "save you from a life of normality"...? I mean, they're just songs at the end of the day (albeit very good ones).

That's right. I love Morrissey. Truly. Is it the same love I feel for my husband or daughter? No. It's for entirely different reasons. There are WAY more kinds of love than just romantic love and the love of friends and family. Morrissey has done so much for me that I'd be an asshole if I didn't love him. No, he didn't mean to help me, but he did. Art is important. Morrissey's art reaches out to people. Out of his brain and heart comes this very important thing. I love him for it.

It's more common sense. People are far too easily controlled by emotions. I simply have no such disabilities. I recognize that 'love', is not a concrete term, and one that is drastically overused to describe anything from a preference in ice cream flavour to a sports team. It has no real concrete meaning and so I refuse to use it to describe my feelings towards another person. I simply enjoy Morrissey's writings and songs a great deal, and that is that.

Lame semantics.

Lame semantics.
I don't think so at all. The word is highly overused, meaning anything from a feeling of support for a local (or international) sports team, to preference for mustard, ice cream, car manufacturer, or even preference for items in one's house. I fail to see the meaning of the word due to how society (over)uses it. When one says "I love you", it is supposed to be "special", yet the word is used to describe a car, a coffee brand, a watch, a cat, a dog, a carpet, or a a feeling you get from skiing, driving, walking ("I love my daily walks!"), etc.
I cannot determine the meaning of the word when it's basically used to describe everything under the sun. Therefore, I do not 'love', Morrissey, I simply enjoy his artwork. I don't see how that is 'lame', it makes perfect sense to me.

There are lots of words that have several different meanings. Why would you choose to define your own feelings of love by the meanings that others give it? Real love is a very sacred thing. You don't have that feeling inside of you? Did you ever?
When I say that I love lima beans it's a very different thing from when I say I love Morrissey or my mom or even my cat. You don't feel that difference?

That is exactly my point. There are hundreds, if not thousands of meanings for the word. It is used to describe anything from tooth paste brand to a feeling you may get while jogging. How can I define it when it has thousands of usages, each different? That is far too broad for me.
[QUOTE=Scarlet Ibis;908774]Real love is a very sacred thing. You don't have that feeling inside of you? Did you ever?
And what exactly is 'real love'? Do you really 'love' that brand of ice cream yo always eat? Do you really 'love' your bed? Do you really 'love' that park bench that gives you a great view? Again, the word is used for everything and anything, so how exactly are we to tell which of these situations are 'true?'
And no, I do not to the best of my knowledge have 'that feeling inside me'. The word is simply a formality used for thousands of different descriptions in our society and a formality (and a over-used one at that) is all it is to me.
When I say that I love lima beans it's a very different thing from when I say I love Morrissey or my mom or even my cat. You don't feel that difference?
No, I don't see a difference, and again, that is exactly my point. You love lima beans, your mom and Morrissey. How can we possibly compare these three things? We cannot. Which only makes the usage of the word all the more confusing.
That makes me feel sad inside.
Looking at a situation objectively instead of with only blind emotion saddens you? I'm sorry to hear that.
