As I already admitted in the other thread. At a Warehouse record store, with my own money. I was five or six, I think.

:o I liked NKOTB, but I was in Jr High. I went to a bunch of their concerts too

I already said this in the other thread; my first musical purchase that didn't involve Charlie Brown was the Karate Kid soundtrack. My excuse is that I was 6!

Good god! I have a horror story about the NKOTB...

My firsts:
CD (1986): Beatles' Please Please Me
album/cassette (1983?): Men at Work, the one with "Land Down Under"
7" single (1984): Prince's "When Doves Cry", but when did the "Axel F Theme" come out? Maybe that was earlier.
12" single (1984): not sure; prolly Prince's "I Would Die 4 U"/"Another Lonely Christmas"
first paid download: can't remember; probably Moz's AOL live set

actually me mum bought it, to annoy me, on familybirthdays, cause my
real name is theo

she always makes jokes about it, that Vicky was my fav. , she knew
I got upset

I can smile about it now, but at that time it was terrible

i never was really a single buyer, me brother was....but I remeber buying
'needles and pins'from Smokie for my Nephew's birtday

I can't remember something else buying when i was childhood class
[we have a very different schoolsystem than the USA]
WHEN i WAS 13, and in my 1 or 2nd class bought lust for life -Iggy pop
it was a giant hit during carnaval, punk was totally cool

I stop, cause it takes at least 6 years when I bought Hatful of Hollow
x-mass time 1984 on a trip to London, knowing the Smiths already a year

The first single I ever bought was Long Tall Glasses by Leo Sayer.
I must have been about 5 years old I think, somewhere in the early '70s. and Leo Sayer sang this song on a tv-show called Toppop (Dutch version of Top of the Pops).
The lyrics included some lines going: you know I can't dance, you know I can't dance. And he did this silly dance. Being the innocent child that I was, I imitated this dance in front of the television.
My parents wanted to buy the single for me and took me to the recordshop where I performed my silly dance for the man behind the counter and he immediately recognized it and laughed and handed me my first ever single! :D Ah... the good old days...

I was so impressed by the crowd's reaction that I bought all the records (3) I could find in a shop in Budapest.
I just checked and the price is still on them: 110 Forint.

Aw, fuck, I hoped that you'd forgotten. I wish I could. OK, here goes.

Freshman year of college (1990), I worked at a drugstore. One of my coworkers, whom I'll call Rita (for "irritating"), was a senior in high school and had a disturbingly public crush on me--she bragged about it to our coworkers and her friends, and even paraded her family through the store to meet me. She was the WORLD'S BIGGEST NKOTB FAN, bar none--it's all she listened to or talked about. She was more of an annoyance than anything else, so I just shrugged her off most of the time. One night, though, she invited me to hang out with her at her high school's football game. I'd already rebuffed about a dozen of similar requests, so I figured that just one couldn't hurt, right? Wrong. Fast forward to the end of the football game. It just so happened that the rest of her family was out of town that night, so she invited me to spend the night at her place. So far, so bad. But nothing could have prepared me for the shock of seeing her bedroom--literally every square inch of walls, ceilings, floor, and furniture was covered with pics of the New Kids on the Block--thousands of photos. Let's fast forward some more, shall we? There is NOTHING more horrifying than waking up and being surrounded by thousands of NKOTB photos in a confined space. I got out of there as soon as I could, and pretty much had nothing to do with her after that.

And that's the story. There's an epilogue, but I'll save for another time.

Well, that's kinda the epilogue. I quit the drugstore job soon afterwards and didn't hear from her for about 5 months. She sent me a very long letter that pleaded with me to explain what went wrong. She said that she'd totally thrown out all of her NKOTB (and Vanilla Ice!) stuff and had started listening to the bands that I liked at the time (guess which ones), had replaced her 80s hairspray 'do with something more "alternative", and pretty much tried to be like me (or someone that I'd like). It was so sad. Sadder than if she'd just stayed true to herself, as horrifying as that self was to me. :o

How can people remember what their first record was? I cannot remember and it must've been only 12 years ago but I just don't have a clue. My taste in music was very random when I was younger.

You would be surprised what you remember with a little thinking.

Well, I was about 7 when I discovered that all of the current songs that appeared on Top Of The Pops were actually available to buy in the shops... As the house was full of stuff like Glen Campbell, Matt Munro and Frank Sinatra... it was quite a surprise to me. To prove a point, me Mam went straight out and got David Soul's 'Silver Lady' for me. (I think it was for her too).
I played the absolute balls off my first vinyls... that's how I remember 'em! ;)

My room was plastered with Kylie and Jason. I even had Kylie and Jason patches on my dayglo bermuda shorts. Nice!
I DID get the perm... it was a bad mistake.

hahahahahahaha! :D I had that too, but I'm sure I bought Jason's first. I spent most of the late 80s begging my mother for a perm like Kylie's, and when this was (repeatedly) refused, I spent hours trying to curl my hair like hers :o these days I spend a fortune and hours trying to get my hair as straight as possible! Oh how times change :D

I spent all my birthday money on a bunch of Elvis single vinyls at a flea market when I was 9ish and I had to visit relatives I hated to use a record player. I'll never give those singles away.

I had loads of Elvis and Beatles records that were given to me, but this was my first record I bought at Music Plus in 84'ish. I was about 7 or 8. It was my neighbor Kathy's fault I turned out such a bad child.

It's a friggin' masterpiece. I never bought it on CD, so I haven't heard it for years.

As I already admitted in the other thread. At a Warehouse record store, with my own money. I was five or six, I think.

My very first album was, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" at the Tower Records in San Diego. I remember being captivated by the sleeve and trying to understand what, "All The Young Girls Loved Alice" meant

That was the first album I ever bought too!!:D
And I think the All The Young Girls Love Alice may be my favourite Elton John song. Though, when I was 13 I was obsessed with Bennie and The Jets.

What a nerd I am/was!
