diets alone never work, sport + diet, that works

Very true. And not eating is not a diet, it does more harm than good really. When you don't eat your metabolism changes and your body tries to conserve energy as much as possible and eventually starts using your muscels for fuel. And when you do start eating properly again, your body stores the excess energy more efficiently and you gain more weight than you originally lost. The yo-yo effect...

just to clear the air, we're not stupid we know exercise + healthy diet works... but anytime i'm awful sick with the flu or a stomach bug its hilarious how quick that weight goes off... hence 'not eating works the best' not necessarily the healthiest! :p

This is true. You'd think being mostly horizontal when you are ill and not burning any calories off you'd not loose much.

I think a few days just having really light soups and smoothies would do trick. My downfall is hoovering up the children's leftovers....i mean you just can't let them waste that last Jaffa cake.Or try the chips to see if they're cooked properly.Oh and hot chocolate.I always make my daughters too hot and have to drink half just to make room for the cold milk.:o

It does fall off fast, but in the long run not eating doesn't work best. It completely fucks up your metabolism. I have a friend who is a good 20 to 30 kilos overweight and she barely eats anything. She has had he worst appetite for years - no breakfast, no lunch, picks at a tiny bit of dinner, repeat. Or she'll go several days not eating. And the weight just keeps slowly creepin on because she's screwed up her metabolism. What she needs to do, is eat MORE. She'll actually end up losing weight.

I'm sure you already know this, of course. Just saying. :)

Last time I had the flu, I literally lost about a stone in 3 days. I woke up one day and my face was literally a skull and my boobs had almost disappeared! My flatmate almost fell over when she saw me.

I'm done with crash diets...Atkins has always workded for me, but it never stays off. I go up and down 30 pounds a year.

I've decided to get some work done. In May, I'm getting a tummy tuck w/ abs definition and lipo on thighs and hips.

It's majoy surgery, yeah, but I deserve to have a smoking hot body finally.
:D
I go to the gym everyday and eat healthy so it's not like I'm doing this as a substition.

The price was right too. It's only $10,000. At first glance it seems like a lot of money, but really, for all I'm getting done it's not. This doctor re-did my chin a few months ago so I know his work is good.

I love how I rationalize this....lol

i took an "Eating:Normal and Abnormal" course when I was a psych major, and it told how during WW2 the US gov't used conscientious objectors for starvation experiments. They found out eventually that when normal people eat, their body wastes some calories, but when you're anorexic, your metabolism kicks into overdrive, squeezing every calorie for what its worth, so that you waste almost zero calories/energy. which is why some recovering anorexics have such issues with 'eating normally'... when they do eat normally, they tend to gain more than a person with a regular metabolism... and then their mind games start up all over again... poor anorexics.

So if someone, like the friend I told you about, began to train themselves to eat regularly and healthily (say, 5-6 small meals per day), they would actually continue gaining weight rather than helping to correct their metabolism and lose weight?

Yes, this my problem, too. I cook for five, have a habit of "grazing" the ingredients while I cook, and hate to see good food go to waste. I have to keep drilling it into my head that leftover food is just as much wasted in a body that doesn't require it, as it is shoved straight in the bin. I also just eat "because it's there", or if I feel restless, bored or upset. :(

I've got a stone and half to lose. It starts today. Celery, anyone....?

Anyways...I have 3 months to get my ass in shape and it sucks. LOL
I have the FDNY physical exam coming up in April or so. After that, they said that the first class that goes to the academy could be as soon as July and that it is 200% more brutal than the physical!!
I've let myself go for the past year or so. I can barely run to the bathroom without getting winded and I smoke too much. So I've decided that I have to eat whole grains and lean meat (so, veggos ;):p:D) only and no more eating MickeyD's or brownies at midnight and then going to bed 15 minutes later. LOL
I am also gonna have to get into better physical shape...I ran for 1 mile yesterday and Saturday and was in serious pain. But I'm sure if I stick with it, I'll build up to where I used to be.
It just sucks though, because there are like a million and one things that I would rather do than exert myself to the point of exhaustion...but I really want the job...so I guess I have no choice.
Plus...I'd look really hot in the uniform.:D

:o Eh, I gained maybe 10 pounds since then...so I have a little more cushion around the stomach...(what can I say? I've got a weakness for sweets)...but the main thing is my muscle tone and lack of cardiovascular ability. Both of which, I will improve in a few weeks.
I assure you, I'll be better than that pic by April and will post a new one to prove it. ;)

I'd like to drop about 5 pounds and have been working on it for a while, but my belly has gotten a bit flabby in my 40s. Sigh. Physically my resting heart rate and blood pressure are where I want them - low! Almost to the point when I was running marathons so that's cool. I'd just like to fit into my size 4s again although I can't complain about being a size 6.

used to do it every day before school, get uo walk to the pool (bout mile from house) swim for an hour, then walk home, do my paperround then walk the mile and 1/2 to school!!! EVERY DAY!! from about 12-16 years old...
makes me feel tired just thinking about it.

I eat healthily and exercise quite a lot, but I'm still sort of chubby. I hope when I get older it's going to sort of go when i get older, because hopefully it's sort of puppy fat. My mum was the same when she was my age and then she suddenly got really skinny when she was 17, and didn't change anything...fingers crossed.

I think it was swimming that really gave me my kick last time I went 3 to 4 times a week for an hour, just took my time with it and it really did help, I found it quite "easy" to lose wait last time I got into my healthier living, it was the maintaining that was the hard part for me, this time I need to mentally get myself into doing a little bit of exercise each day, I feel the wii fit is giving me the push I need as just now I find it fun. I know its only been a couple of days and it might be my imagination but I think my jeans are a tiny bit looser.

I've started biking everywhere I possibly can, mainly b/c I don't feel like filling my car up more than twice a month, but getting fit is obviously one of the major side effects. ;) I've started using it to do almost all grocery shopping, which means that I can only buy what I can carry in my panniers and messenger bag. This cuts down on the amount I spend and keeps me from picking up needless junk food. Since I've started doing this, my DH and I have realized that we're both eating better than before.

As far as how much it's actually helping me loose weight.... I feel better than I have in ages. My clothes fit more loosely and I can tell I'm getting smaller in strategic areas. I'm a size 10 or 12 in pants depending on the style, and I'm not going down any whole sizes yet or anything. I'd have to hit the gym or spend at least an hour 4 days a week doing hills on the bike to see that much difference. For now though, just feeling my muscles get stronger and feeling better, and seeing even the tiniest positive changes in the way I look is a great thing. Biking is fun, I don't look at it as a chore, and I want to keep it that way as much as possible and just see what happens.

no I can see that this would be a problem. Are you having some medical advice on it?

my sister is very thin, not dangerous thin but very thin and we were talking about BMI and mine is WAYYY over but hers is rather low so I was saying maybe she needs to gain a couple of pounds but she eats well, does not snack too much and does work out with her husband so I guess she is happy with how she is.

Fat cell numbers 'set for life' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7378349.stm)

"No amount of dieting will alter the number of fat-hoarding cells in our bodies, research has suggested.

Scientists at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden say that the number is set during adolescence and stays the same, regardless of obesity later in life. "

I know its not so much a diet, and more of a fast or cleanse but friends of mine are on it now and I just read up on it. It seems like the benefits might we worth it.

Anyone have any thing to add on this?

I think those things are more for your psyche than for your body. It wont hurt you to drink lemon juice or do one of those 'cleanses' for a day or two. But anything after that is detrimental. fasting is not really all that swell for the body.

You could avoid colon clogging foods for a week; eat lots of vegetables and fiber (but be sure to get some protein and iron from somewhere), get your guy working overtime, hee hee. colon blow!

I thought I would make this thread the place to tell everyone about my weight loss endeavours...
I went to Weight Watchers tonight (which I've been going to for 14wks now) and I lost 2lbs this week :D
Which puts me at 29lbs altogether so far

oo well done :)

I am really trying hard, but people just keep tempting me! I said no to the danish pasty I was offered at lunch time, but there was a lovely spread of crisps, cheese pastry twists, dips and chocolate torte. I know I should say no, but I really struggle to :( I didn't totally gorge myself, but I did indulge.

It seems impolite to say no when people have gone to an effort, but sometimes you've just got to explain you're on strict calorie control and hope they care enough to offer support rather than temptation.

I know. I need more willpower! I am getting there, slowly but surely. I don't want to go on a crash diet, I want to keep it off for good this time, so more exercise and cutting out most of the crap I've been eating is the way to go for me.

As with the knitting and the writing, I have to become obsessed to get things rolling, so half-measures aren't much use at this stage. My workout was truncated by a neighbour popping in, so I'll have to do some more of that later.

Resisting the bread I've just baked is going to be a challenge - maybe I'll go for a spin on the bike while the family demolish it.

The extra water really does help reduce appetite. :)

I've noticed that about the water, too! I'm really trying to limit myself to 2 bits of bread a day. I had toast and homemade lentil pate for lunch, was lovely! I agree about the obsessed thing: I'm exactly the same.

I've even joined SparkPeople. Pity the team leader on the 80's music group is a Smiths hater.... maybe I'd better link her up with the shbf. Actually, it's all a bit wholesome on Spark - I really have to watch myself around the religious types of whom there seem to be a considerable number. Maybe next time I'm tipsy, I'll let slip about my hobbies...

Just got back from another 10 mile bike ride - left it a bit late and it was insect hell down past the hedgerows. I'm off to shower the gnats out of my hair.

There was a slice of eggy bread left over from the boys' after-school snack and I'm afraid I scoffed it. I'm betting it came to about 400 cals. I'll be on me bike.....

On the other hand, I weighed in (yes, Karin, I knew I said I wouldn't but....) at a gnat's cock under 10 stone this morning. It's starting to shift at last!

Back when I was about 20, I went down to seven and half stone due to a (disastrous) relationship falling apart. I looked gaunt and awful. There's nothing glam or sexy about being thin because you're unhappy, as I'm sure we both can testify.

But a bike doesn't go off like cheese in the fridge; with a modicum of maintenance, it'll still be there, ready to go when you next get the urge to jump on.

My new bike has a rear suspension post. I'll have a bouncy bottom. BOINGGG! :D

Oh, in that case, I'll have a moan, too ( :D) .This weather keeps disrupting my cycling and once my routine goes to pot, I find it much harder to stick to my goals.

Nine stone five!

I hadn't lost anything for yonks and then two pounds came off overnight. Must have been that bottle of wine - I knew this tee-total thing wasn't good for me. ;)

Btw, "A pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter.", just in case you forget to weigh yourselves before your first pot of tea on a morning.

Okay, back on the bike. Probably to get blown into a haystack. *tuts*

I've run 1.5 miles on the treadie 5 (or 6?) times in the past 3 weeks, and I think I'm down a pound or so but my clothes are still super-tight. But I'll go again Sunday.

My goodness, it's windy out there! A bee got blown into my face and then got tangled in my hair. I'm lucky I didn't get stung.

Ah, it's starting to come off at last, then? It can seem frustratingly slow at times. But I bet your heart is thanking you. :)

No exercise for me til my arm is better. I'm a bit annoyed about it, to be honest, because I was into a routine, and now it's going to be about Sunday before I can do anythin except walk

Oh dear! It was my great-niece's first birthday party today. I ate naughty snacks and too much cake and drank a fair bit of wine. :o

Got drenched on the bike tonight but having being naughty, I thought I'd better not skip it.

Happy birthday.
Incidentally it's also my friend's daughter's third birthday. :)

I'm having vegetable soup for detox.

She hadn't a clue was all the fuss was about, bless her.

Back on the path of virtue tomorrow. Might have a last naughty snack and write today off as a blip. :)

We have a tradition to have a big celebration of a baby's first birthday.
Neighbours get a cake and we give some money.
All of us have some pictures of our first birthday.
I and brother didn't have a group photo with relatives, but my sister's photo with relatives looks hilarious. :D

This is interesting. I was actually reading someone's blog regarding abnormal tomatoes and this popped up in the comments (regarding an earlier post I coudn't find):

"...you didn't mention the main physiologic reason why most dieters reach a weight loss plateau. in your defence, lots of doctors are unaware of this as well. when the body stores fat it only leaves a small portion with a good blood supply. as we get fatter the body takes away blood flow to allow the fat to act as insulation. you can see this in the o.r. during the primary incision... the first two inches of a three inch fat layer don't bleed at all. only the last inch (closest to the core) has a blood supply. so, after your body breaks down this close fat layer (everything happens through the blood stream) you have to wait while your body grows new blood vessels to access the remaining stored fat. this takes time, how long varies among patients, so you have to be patient."

I am 43 and the best thing I have found for the subject matter is running. I only started running this year for the first time ever in January and I am amazed at the difference it has wrought.

I'm the most ungainly creature you ever saw on two legs, so running is a non-starter for reasons of self-consciousness alone. Cycling gets you away from the eyes of other people much faster.

I've gained two pounds! I know I was a bit naughty over the weekend, but that's just unfair.

I'm having my hair cut short tonight - wonder if that'll show up on the scales in the morning. *clutches at straws*

You're not the only one.

One of my best friends' hubby is addicted to running, even he's unwell he went running which made his condition worse.
I suggested my frined to give him penalty if he would do it again because she has to do all the housework and childcare.

Ok so I'm hoping on this bandwagon too. And its about f-ing time. I think I put on something like 30 lbs in the past 3 years and I would like to reverse all of that and then some. So I'm now in week 2 of what will surely be a very difficult uphill battle. And advice or pointers anyone feels like sharing would be much appriciated.

In particular I am looking for good ab and oblique exercises for toning etc. Any suggestions?

If you have room, a swiss ball is good. The most painful (but some of the best exercises) are special sits ups for the lower abdominals (reverse trunk curls)

Cycling is hard when your thighs ache anyway. :(

But I did it. :)

I ate badly yesterday, but well today.

I have three weeks to lose 6 more pounds, but I've become stuck at 9 stone 6. Bah!

Ooh, we all know he works out sekritly....

I wouldn't mind a purty mouth like that, but otherwise I'm not sure there are too many bits of Morrissey I covet. I already have a big, manly chin.

Size ten jeans! I have just bought (UK) size 10 jeans and am wearing them!

I need to lose weight, mainly because I've been having issues with one knee and all the extra weight I'm carrying is not good for it, I'm sure. I've always been heavy and I don't want to lose a lot of weight, just 30-40 lbs. I will still be overweight if I lost that, I don't think I would look right if I was any thinner than that. Anyhow, I got a Wii Fit from Brian for our anniversary and I've been using it sporadically. Used it for about 12 minutes this morning, hehe. And it says I lost two lbs since last time, so that is good. I also want to start shopping mainly at farmers markets and eating more locally grown fruits and veggies and better quality meat, when I eat meat.

Dude, it really sucks to be a grown up and take care of yourself. It's too hard. :p

Can anyone recomend a good online calorie counter? I'm looking for the caloric value of different salads without having to break it down by each individual veg.

Anyone know of any websites that might have this? Thanks.

Do you mean pre-made, shop-bought salads? That's the only way I can see you'll get an all-in calorie count.

I've been quite bad recently, still eating very well, but I havn't got back into the swing of exercise after having the stich out of my arm *hangs head in shame* I did weights on Monday, and was doing tums, bums and thighs last night when someone rang. I really WILL get back into it at the weekend!

well, it's easier in the week, but I try to stay away from the supermarket at the weekends, and I make a point of getting up and doing my workout as soon as I wake up on a Saturday and a Sunday. Hard, but it does work for me :)

In the last 24 hours, 3 (yes 3!) people have all commented on how much weight I've lost! Woooooohoooooooooo!
