View Full Version : Has any stage invaders ever been arrested?

I've found plenty of posts of invaders who are flung out of the gig - even those who are allowed to go back to their seat - but was wondering if anyone actually got huckled by the polis?
Would like to know so as to decide whether to brave it at Edinburgh?
Also; at who's discretion would it be to call the cops? The security - Rocksteady most likely - or the venues?

I don't think anyone has been arrested.
In September 1991 at Tokyo Budokan gig a guy managed got up to the stage and hugged Morrissey.
The next gig in Yokohama the security didn't allow him to get in the venue which was the most outrageous thing happened in Morrissey gig.
Remembering this incident still breaks my heart. :(

Just thinking that, well, it IS me...so if it's ever going to happen to someone it would be me... would not like to get a record for attempting something that thousands have done before and got away with...
but then I may just do it anyway!

At the Atlantic City gig over the summer, announcements were made that if anyone invaded the stage they would be arrested on site..there were a few stage invaders but I'm not sure anything like that actually happened.

Here are my top five worst experiences that I can think of:
5) A failed attempt at Marley park was well reported and looked worse than it was. The worst thing about that was one of the security was gabbing me by one of my nipples to pull me out. I told him to let go of my nipple but he refused, so I started to punch the offending arm. He highlighted how the guarda were watching. So, I started shouting, 'Stop assaulting me!' He let go and I ran back into the festival then suddenly he ran after me again and ripped my wristband off to prevent me from getting back into the area in front of the stage. I gave him the finger then leaped the fence into that area. The watching guarda were laughing and the security guy looked like a dick. Hehe.
4) In Cork in 1999 security were on my case before the gig began! Three of them tried to intimidate me by crowding round me and getting right in my face. I refused to hand them my ticket, only allowing to look at it. They didn't believe the seat was mine. During the support band Sack, they stood in front of me for nearly the whole time trying to prevent my view to the stage. They moved their attentions to those who wanted to stand and not sit. Bizarre night!
3) At a concert in Liverpool, 2004, early into the gig after a failed attempt, I was dragged to the foyer and was given a few kicks and punches out of sight of the audience before being thrown into the street. A police car outside drove up and called me over. They didn't care about the assault on me that they saw and did see me booting out at one of the thugs at the end. They just made it clear if I went near the venue, I'd spend the night in the cells. One of Morrissey crew came out to make sure I was all right. He gave me a crew sweater and told me I was not to wear it until the tour was over. I kept my promise.
2) At the Royal concert hall in Glasgow, I jumped onto the on stage speakers from the balcony. Security on the stage put their arms together and told me to jump into them. As I did they withdrew their arms and I crashed onto the stage nearly breaking my legs and wrists. I was then picked up by my belt and given a swift beating all the way to the exit.
1) The worst thing that has happened to me was at Hultsfred. After getting to the stage and reaching up to shake Mozzer hand. Security took me behind the stage and with plastic cable ties around my wrists, they attached me to a metal trolley and held a knife to my throat. They said the police would arrest me but in the end they let me go.
The tours in '91, '92 and '95 were much more chaotic than more recent years but less violent.
A point to note is that the a-holes have always been the venue hired security and not Morrissey's own guys. Even then it is only a small number that are truly out of their depth and result to neanderthal violence.
If you plan on going on stage. I do suggest you read my previous post on the subject linked at the beginning of this post.

A possibly stupid question, but when something really terrible happens to you like for example at Hultsfred, do you not have the right to have the police investigate an assault charge against them, it sounds horrific.

in wom mag(free german music mag) from 2004
morrissey mentioned an incident on an american tour (dont remember the city/state have to look into the mag for it..will do that) where someone climbed up on stage and had a gun with him and morrissey expected to be shot but the guy "just" showing off his gun without pointing it to anyone and then jumped back into the audience i wonder if this guy was arrested after?
the guy who interviewed him is an british journalist(nme?) so i guess this interview is lurking around in some british mag..and this article in wom is a translated one cause i read that the only german mag who got an interview with moz in 2004 was the rolling stone...

To be honest. My only concern was getting back into the festival and retrieving my bag (flight ticket etc).
I remembered at least one of the bouncers who was ultra violent with me in Liverpool and about a month later, he remembered me. :)
Never involve the police in matters that do not concern them. Pay a 400llb man £40 to deal with it for you.
I want to highlight that the security are there to protect the audience, Morrissey, the lads and the equipment. If you go onto the stage. You take the risk of the consequences. Almost all of them are really nice and gentle, even when they don't need to be. They are doing a job that Morrissey is paying them to. Show them the respect the deserve.
Also, if GlasgowChivas plans to get on the Playhouse stage. I'd be more concerned about other people than the polis. ;)

I was thinking about maybe trying to stage invade at Edinburgh as well (because i'm going alone and my dad can't stop me!) but after reading a few posts about it i'm a bit scared now. Rocksteady are really rough, one time i was at a gig and i passed out (for some werid reason i always pass out when i go to the barras in Glasgow). Anyway one of the rocksteady guys draged me out and pushed me on the floor. I woke up and i couldn't even bloody walk and he grabed my arm (it was really painful) i keapt on falling down and when i got to the backstage bit he just pushed me roughly to the first aid bit. Now i'm really small, not strong at all and i had just fainted i thought it was REALLY unnecessary to be so rough with me. I couldn't even walk, i could hardly run backstage could I! Although an other time i fainted (and i was down the front again) and no one done a thing- which pissed me off because i banged my head and i needed some medical attention.
To be fair most of the time they are nice and they are just doing their job after all!:)

Wow you've have really bad experiences. It's usually the venue's security people who are the worst form any show I've been to Moz and others. I've never tried to make it onstage maybe one day I will. I got to shake his hand a few times, that's enough for me.

I remember seeing you taking a hammering at Marley Park.
I think it affected Morrissey because if I remember correctly it was during Ganglord and Morrissey kept saying to to the security "EASY BOYS,EASY" but they just kept on hauling you off. Then Morrissey stopped the song and started it again. He idn't seem to talk or enjoy himself much after that.
I got beaten up in Killarney by the security after my attempt to get on stage.During How soon is now i made a good leap but one of the security caught one of my legs in mid air and i hit the stage face first, then before I knew it four or five of them were on top of me they were very rough.
I was thrown out with blood pouring from my mouth and my back and arm were bruised too.
They wouldn't let me back in but I got back in for the last 3 songs by sneaking in through the hotel entrance.
I was a very quiet boy at the Olympia in Dublin a few day's later.

One of the guys I work with used to be part of venue security at the Kings Lynn Corn Exchange. Before the Morrissey show in 2006, the head of security showed the team 'Everyday is Like Sunday' on 'Morrissey Live in Dallas' and told them that is what they should expect.
Anyone who has seen the dvd (or vhs) will know what I mean.

I think if you rush the stage whatever happens you get what you deserve. They make it clear that stage invading is not welcome. How far away is Morrissey from being considered an Axl Rose where he incites the crowd. All it will take is someone to be seriously hurt and you are going to see a stop to it.
Morrissey invites it but then you can tell that he does not like being groped and touched in the way that many of the stage invaders come into contact with him grope and touch him. I believe that it is in the "Will Never Marry" video that he jabs the guy in the neck with the microphone. It would not surprise me to learn that Morrissey plays "good cop bad cop" with the security and audience members so that he appears as if he welcomes it but truly does not want to be groped like that.

the s thing with stage invaders is its a great sight to see some of them get their luck with hugging the man but i saw and read that a lot of concerts where abandoned like at the boxers tour where he played shoplifters as a encore which was the first time solo he played smiths songs so many people want to hear that but of course the crowd reaction was to storm the stage at a big amount so they didnt see and hear the song and in 2004 it was abandóned during there is a light so yes its a great sight if one goes on stage but if the audience happens to appear in large amounts on stage it ruins the show for those who long for certain songs to be played and he often sings for the best songs during the last half and a lot of people who did pay and travel a long time and not coming from the same city where the concert take place are of course angry then..so i like seeing stage invaders in small amounts/(meaning one at time) and not being abusive but it seems when they are up on stage and they go off the rails and dont react in the same polite way as when they encounter them in the street.. well im not sure maybe some fans are jumping on him and wrap their legs around his body too. whren they see him on t a street..:D
but the energy he gives us while singing that songs has to arouse some repressed feellings obviously...i love that sight of these tough/hard looking characters going crazy while trying to shake his hand. or even hugging him..amazing scenes
i have to say i did see that only on tape never live ..these 3 concerts i attended which were my first ..nobody enters the stage there...
is there any other male artist who gets kissed by another man on a "rock"concert...i dont know any...

I don't see that inviting people to run onstage is the equivalent to inviting people to grope you. One does not have to follow the other. People should have a bit of self control and a bit of respect.

I tried to invade last May at the Auditorium theater. I was one step away from making it on and some old, mean, fat ass security guard nabbed me and literally threw me out the front doors of the venue by a gigantic grundy :p (he had a hold of my back belt loop which was twisted up into my right side - he left a big bruise on my ribs among the other war wounds of the attempt) He kept screaming in my face "YOU'RE GOING TO JAIL!!!!!" and I'm like "FOR WHAT?! and LET GO OF ME, FUCKER!!" (cuz you know, I look so threatening and tough) I never got an answer as to why I'd go to jail tho I know now it must be for 'trespassing'? I honestly found it (actual jail time---as if) so amusing...I can just imagine myself sitting in the clink, arrested for trying to get onstage at a Morrissey concert. I'm so bad ass. :D

For some reason I remember the time my grandmother went to the hospital on a Friday night complaining of chest pains. While waiting there was a guy explaining to the doctor how he was all cut up because he somehow accidentally fell into barbed wire that came out of nowhere. Moments later the cops found where he escaped to.

ive tried making it on stage the past 12 shows, if not more. i got on 3 times, 2 of the times i got to hug him the other time i got chased off an just dove. all the other times i only made it to the huge moat in between the barricade and the stage usually ill get a hand shake. the one gmex show i got thrown on the ground and the security just started punching me in the chest then another security person seen this and kinda stepped and stopped him then help me get up an walk me back into the crowd. in all these attempts ive never been arrested. even that ac nj show at the borgata they were cool and just smiled if though they said you would be arrested if you attempted to get on. actually arturo came up to me after and asked if i was ok and shook my hand then he said ill see you later. haha. the point to all this boring rambling is.... i say go for it!!!!!! just be nice to the people around you, dont be rude. wait for the last song or encore that way if you do get kicked out you wont miss the whole show and more importantly you wont ruin the show for anyone else. just be courteous to everyone around you. good luck! :)

WRONG yourself. It is a prediction of what may happen based on past events of a similar nature in other venues. Now that comment that you made was simply being spiteful. There are numerous fan videos and it has been further well documented of Morrissey running off the stage when a "mob mentality" aroused too many people to rush the stage creating a situation that he felt he no longer wanted to be a part of. (I would say he felt endangered but that is unverified).
Case in Point "Live in Dallas" VHS
If he did not want to promote it they would not show it to glorify those that do it. I do not know what they do during the UK Football (Soccer to me) but in baseball and American football when someone rushes the field the cameras turn away so not to give the person the exposure they desire nor to glorify it.
Morrissey glorifies these people. One day there is a real possibility that it may get out of hand and someone will get hurt.

If you mean my comment about shaking his hand. I was being serious and I ask everybody to think about it. Sure, shake his hand but don't then hold onto to him or pull at him. Night after night of that results in a sore arm and if you respect him, you wouldn't want to cause him discomfort.

i missed my chance in Omaha i was up against the stage with no one around and Morrissey actually motioned for people to come up. Security was very nice about it unless you overstayed you're welcome.

I must have misconstrued what you were referring to. However what Morrissey wants in this case is irrelevant. He has a responsibility to his fans not to incite what could be a physical risk to his fans and concert goers. I know of a LOT of high profile acts that reach out to their fans for the interaction of the audience. Morrissey does it, Bono does it... hell I watched Billy Joel hand his microphone to a group and had them sing along with him.
However it seems to me that Morrissey has always played good cop bad cop with the security and actually condones and glorifies it for the above reasons I mentioned.
I am remembering the threads a while ago on whether or not it is safe to bring my __ year old child with me. I mentioned the same things.

Mission accomplished.

When I went to the Moz gig in Indiana back in 10/20/07, I ran up to get a good glimpse of him then I wanted to give him this drawing I did but this security guard dude (bastard!) wouldn't let me and gave me this gesture that means I should go back to my seat. I was pissed and was about to give him "the finger," but couldn't 'cuz then I'd be kicked out of the whole arena. But, still had a great time!

1The tours in '91, '92 and '95 were much more chaotic than more recent years but less violent.
.
was that you i remember in 91 someone jumping from the balcony onto the speaker stacks then onto the stage ... i remember thinking the guys an idiot (obviously now i know you)
95 was the best for stage diving - the boxers tour was a riot from start to finish , most of all motherwell which ended with most of the audiance on the stage and the gig endiing during shoplifters

It was in all the papers and music papers including a letter to NME (I must take my hat of to the brave young fan jumped from the balcony to the on-stage speakers and danced precariously) but I've never managed to source a bootleg or even a photo.

Marlay Park gig was August 2006.
I listened to the live recording online when it was on in September or October, really shocked that the security guy was too rough, made Morrissey upset.
It could have been one of the best gigs in 2006, but one selfish act ruined it. :(

I was at that gig & yep Moz was so concerned that he stopped singing & told the security "easy boys, easy boys" he then thanked M23 for the attempt before starting the song again!

I do suggest you read my previous post on the subject linked at the beginning of this post.
without reading the whole thread, why are you such a marked man?? You dont look like Mike Joyce do you?

I saw this and was shouting to security that there was no need to assault you. Arturo came over to me and asked what was happening and after I told him he went over to you. It was stage left on the first night.
i know this is a really late response but thank you! i actually dont remember arturo coming up after but i was still all high off the exper. all i remember is oh man im goin to be kicked out in the freezing cold while my friend is still inside for the rest of the show. how the f am i goin to find him, how the f am i goin to get back to bolton. etc etc etc. then i realized he wasnt throwin me out an i went back around an tried to get over again haha.
