I have as well. 2004. Beautiful. :) http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showpost.php?p=330883&postcount=24

I posted about it in 2006, in response to a concern that zom had:

For zom and all the others feeling this way, let me assure you - it's a completely unfounded fear.
I don't have insight into a great many things, but this I do, so I'll share.

I was rewarded with the opportunity to meet Morrissey at the end of the 2004 tour, as were about 10 other fans, after the show in Dublin.

This man couldn't have been more gracious, kind, and generous to us.
For example: I distinctly remember towards the end of our meeting, an LA fan handed Morrissey a letter from his friend and said to Moz, "this is from Linda(?), she's sorry she couldn't be here but she wanted you to have this." Moz took the letter from him, looked him in the eye, earnestly said "thank you" and nodded his head, and then he gave the fan a great big hug. Such warmth, respect and empathy were just flowing from the man.

I don't really want to go into my experience because it was just so wonderful and personal, but I guarantee you this - if you're ever lucky enough to meet him (in a respectful manner, not by crashing his party or whatever), you will not be disappointed.

As one of the members of his entourage told me - if you love the man, he knows it. And he treats you with all the gentleness, respect, and appreciation in the world.

He saves his snippy comments for all his celebrity "it's-fashionable-at-the-moment-to-like-Morrissey" pseudo-fans. :)

So close, yet so far away. Only in that I've stood in front of him and heard him sing, and taken his hand and thanked him for singing. But that's a lot, isn't it? It seems to matter a lot to him, and it did to me.

i met Moz in 92 at tower records signing in NY. I was thrilled but couldn't get it together, just ended up asking if I could hug him (he said yes and we hugged) and thank you.

i remember walking home and realizing this ridiculous smile was plastered all over my face - I think it stayed there for a few days.

Clearly you let those blue eyes fool you into thinking that Moz is female.

I think Jake is shorter than Moz, but I'm pretty sure that is him...someone correct me if I'm wrong. I know Jake was with Moz at the Tower signing in Philly in '94. He looked just like that guy in the picture. Hmm. About the "wedding" ring...Moz usually wears some kind of ring, but I don't think it's a band. He was wearing a mans class ring for a while too.

Please don't quote me but... Jake is "supposedly" one of Morrissey's only relationships...no one is really sure if it's true. Jake was "supposedly" addicted to heroine(?). Ok, that's all I'm going to say...

Jake has said of his relationship with Morrissey that they have shared a house and were "best mates".

I was in line for that signing in Boston but didn't make it. My heart broke. I was there for like 9 or 10 hours and couldn't get to the door before the signing ended, and yet behind me the line went on and on for about 1/4 mile. It was really a sight to see.

I'm soo sorry so you! I know how you feel, Duran Duran did a instore signing there in 1989 and I didn't meet them. I standing inline for hours in the rain. I was standing before the subway entrance and i still didn't meet them:( I did go up in the store during the signing and managed to get some pics. The whole thing was mess. People cutting inline. the people who met them were dry. If you were inline you should have been wet for standing in the cold rain for hours.

This is why I don't attempt these record signings normally. I only did once kind of on impulse to see Ringo Starr and by some very odd twist of fate, we got there about an hour before it was due to be over, my coworker and I who went with me didn't get one of those wristbands, but I guess Ringo was in a good mood that night or something because he was willing to see a few more people after they got through the wristbanded folks, and then they cut the line off about 5 people behind us.

Unfortunately since we did go on a spur of the moment, I didn't bring my camera or have one on me to get a pic of or with him. But I got a pic of my signed CD on my MySpace and he was the greatest. Very chatty and genuine which I honestly didn't expect.

I would love to try and attempt to meet Morrissey at such an event one day but considering the sheer size of his fan base I don't think it would work out like that. i can see more of a chance meeting happening then at a organized event.

Just been chatting to a guy, and Morrissey came up.

He works in a bookshop in London (I think, he lives near me, so it can't be much further than that) and guess who came in and skimmed a copy of 'Morrissey & Marr'?

Glad to see our man likes to get wound up still, every now and again :p

He's like the virgin mary...I would have to touch him somehow..someway...
and that's weird..I'll be the first to admit...:)

When I met Dave Gahan I was able to control myself, get an autograph an keep the line moving and he's been my fantasy for way longer than Morrissey, but it's different with Morrissey..can't explain it..but you know what I mean :)

I was 15 the first time, in 1992 at Sam Goody on Hollywood Blvd(where the Knitting factory now is), and he was absolutely the kindest, genuine man to me, even though I was sobbing like a little bitch. I will never forget about how those few minutes made such a massive impact on my life... And I got it all recorded on video, thank you Michelle, wherever the hell you are!!:(

I noticed it straight away- tis beguiling...

I met Morrissey's mother Elizabeth Dwyerback in 1989. I went round his house see if he wanted to play out, and his mum answered the door, and very sweetly and politely told me to basically sling me 'ook!

I can understand it- at the time, she must have got bothered by fans almost every day of the week.

i saw this last year mozmal, and reading it again once again now had me just as moved and awestruck.

i read the annotations you helpfully provided to accompany moz's postcards/letter, but didn't see what prompted him to mention his birthdate on the second postcard...had you asked him anything about it or did he just unexpectedly say that?

also, the dates present in his letters are all shown american style (mm/dd) -- four of dates total -- one date ("August 24th") shown in the first letter and three being in the last postcard. sorry if this question is naive or ignorant, but do you think that was an intentional "americanization" on his part due to heavy influence by american pop stars/music at the time? [i reviewed the discussion about your submission at the time on the main page, but didn't see anything about the date style that he used]

You're absolutely right on the subject of his birthday - I did indeed ask him when it was. I don't think the dates were 'Americanised', I think most people would say July 12th rather than 12 July, but then again, I could be wrong. Thanks so much for your nice reply and a merry Christmas to you. Cheers.

likewise to you!
and just another thought on the dates --- since i don't have much experience with hearing ukers/europeans/etc. naturally speak or informally write dates in that way --- would you not typically say like: "...on the 12th of july..." since dates usually get written dd/mm?

I'm Australian and we use the european way of writing dates. I'd never write 12/16/07, for example. For us, it is 16/12/07. But when it comes to writing out dates as you have outlined above, I'd use either - whatever I felt like at the time - eg, 16th of December, or, December 16th.

I have....twice! Both times @ his former residence in Hollywood. Once w/Chris from the old "Ambitious-Outsiders" site, and once w/Palare(Abrahan). Both times, we were there all of about 5-10 minutes dropping off gifts for him, and he showed up. We weren't stalking him, sleeping on his porch or anything, just there for a few minutes, and he came out(first time) and drove up(second time). Even remembered me the second time: "You're that BIG JEFF guy! How are you?", to which I immediately almost crapped my pants. I was nervous and overwhelmed(we both were), but he was extremely nice, and thanked us repeatedly for coming by. A sweetheart of a guy IMHO. He even told us to to "stay and talk to him" when we said "We're taking up too much of your time". I hugged him, asked if I could bring a letter up that I had written to him, but forgot in the truck(the first time), and he said "of course you can".

All 3 of us(Abrahan, Chris, and Myself) have spoken about it on here repeatedly, and given pictures.

What's weird is...a few days later, a girl(here) met him @ Amoeba Records in L.A., and asked him if "he had met/seen anyone important lately"? & mentioned our story about meeting him, and he said something to the effect of "Oh yes, they're very nice guys, it was by chance". A few months later, my friend Tom met him, mentioned that he knew me, and Morrissey nodded and said "I know him, yes".

This probably doesn’t count, but here goes anyway…

I stood right next to him as we were both going into a club (The Roxy) here in Los Angeles back in 2004. As I stood right next to him I simply COULD NOT believe my own eyes, I was in complete shock and amazement!! Anyway, I had access to the tiny VIP section that night which is where Moz was hanging out too. I had so many different scenarios running through my mind. So what did I end up doing? Nothing much really. I wrote "Thank You" on the back of one of my business cards, walked over, handed him the card and simply walked away without saying a single word – perhaps he thought I was mute

I decided that as an adoring fan, the biggest "gift" I could give to him was to the gift of privacy, so I just left him alone to enjoy an evening with his mates. Pretty lame of me, huh? In retrospect, I probably could have at least said “Hello” or something.

I decided that as an adoring fan, the biggest "gift" I could give to him was to the gift of privacy, so I just left him alone to enjoy an evening with his mates. Pretty lame of me, huh? In retrospect, I probably could have at least said “Hello” or something.

I think would have probably remembered an odd act like that, i bet he cherishes that business card! :)

I haven't. But my English teacher at school Mr Treacey knew him. He (Mr Treacey) was from Stretford too (I would assume)

In my lunchbreak I had purchased Morrissey's new single, Sing Your Life, and was using the cassette box (yes cassette single!!!!) as a ruler when Mr Treacey said "thats that Morrissey isn't it?"

Me: Um yeh. (Got all flustered)

Treacey: I knew him

Me: Really?

T: Yeh, he used to go to the shop by me.

Me: When?

T: Oh before he became famous.

Have to say in cold blood it sounds like a load of balls but the tone of his voice was true. And not attempting to be impressionable at all.
Funny thing was Mr Treacey had a very soft Mancunian accent too. And we all thought he was a bit of a ponce to boot!

When you're 15/16 these things allegedly matter!!!

here is an interesting thread http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showthread.php?t=70385&highlight=moz+fans What "Moz" thinks of fans
and i just copy one post of kudo in it in here cause i find it quite interesting he must have really liked you kudo...

so kudo what did you answer him? about your favourite, least fave song and if the smiths would make it in the US?

Re: What "Moz" thinks of fans
Here is was I can tell you from my own experience as a fan meeting Morrissey. Enough time has passed so I feel I share it.

I grew up in Los Angeles, and I first meet him at his hotel on the Meat is Murder tour. I was 16 he was in his early 20s. He was just sitting in the lobby of the hotel. He jokingly said he was waiting for other fans to stop by but I was the only one, so he would have to make due with me. He was very nice, he asked me tons of questions, what was my favorite Smiths song, what was my least favorite, do you think the Smiths will be big in America, etc. He signed everything I brought with me, about 6 records and a poster, tour book. Then after about 15 min. Someone came in a car to pick him up.

I met him 2 more times in L.A. in the 80s Similar experience, always asked lots of questions. I met him for a 4th time in 1991, when he was shooting the November Spawned a Monster video. He seemed to have loads of time then, he previously went shopping with other 2 fans, and when he got back he was signing tons of stuff for them and I joking asked if he wanted to go get something to eat. He said he had plans but asked if I wanted to meet him at a pub later that night, I said I couldn't because I was still 20yrs at the time. But I came back the next day, and again he seemed to have plenty of time on his hands and wanted to go to a punk collectible shop in Orange County and asked if I could take him. I said sure. This was probally the best meeting I have had with him. At this time he was still hung up on the Smiths breakup, and asked lots and lots of questions. I also noticed he was kinda cheap, very price sensitive. I asked him about it, and he said "I don't know how long this will last without Johnny"

After this is where I consider Morrissey died for me.

The next 4 times I met him was in Los Vegas, San Francisco and in 2x LA during the Kill Uncle tour.

In LA there were about 15 people waiting for him, he signed for them all, didn't talk much, posed for a few pictures and refused to sign any Smiths stuff.

In S.F. there were about 5 people waiting for him, he didn't sign for anyof them, and didn't say a peep to any of them, just got on the bus and headed for Sac.

In Vegas he signed for about 20 people, but again didn't say much didn't sign any Smiths stuff.

Back in L.A. I caught him at the Hotel alone, he signed a few Morrissey solo items for me, I already had all my Smiths stuff signed, but asked why he stopped signing, he said "don't ever mention the Smiths to me again"
He wasn't mean when he said it, but he was changed. This did not seem like the same man who asked me a million questions about the Smiths just a couple years ago.

Later on around the time Your Arsenal came out he was on MTV with his band and said that he liked his new band much better than the Smiths. With that my heart sunk. I was very bitter about it for awhile, I didn't bother going to the Your Arsenal Tour, I felt his new band where the "hired help" and substandard and thought that Morrissey was self-diluted at the time. I later warmed up.

Needless to say this was the last time I was able to meet Morrissey, security became tighter at shows, I tried a few times to meet him at his house in LA but I always seemed to miss him, I caught his gardner once, and he told me that he doesn't meet fans at the house anymore, I guess he was in a hurry one day and didn't have time for a fan at his house and the fan kicked his car and dented it. I saw the car the story was true. I tried a few more times with no luck. I also seen interviews where he complained about fans trying to meet him at his home. So I gave up on the idea.

Now he is living in Italy, it may actually be eaiser to meet him in LA, It's less intrusive meeting someone at a Hotel then at their home... He may be more receptive.

Hope you found it interesting...

I don't even remember all the details. Check out the thread if you want, a few of us lit into a couple of his assertions.

Basically it was obvious Kumo was here to stir trouble. (Actually I think Kumo periodically reappears under new names.) He may well have met Morrissey on a few occasions. Can't say for sure he didn't. He had some memoribilia. It was just obvious in reading his many replies that for whatever reason he had soured on Morrissey and was casually saying malicious things. The one you posted sums it up: 'Years later he was a bitter man' etc. IIRC there were also nasty comments about how his fanbase in southern California had changed for the worse since the days of The Smiths.

Years ago I was friends with another pop star who is at least as well known as Moz. Someone did something very similar to him and he ended up keeping that little card in his wallet forever. It meant a lot to him. So, things like that can really mean a lot even though they seem small.

Too lazy to type up full details but, for years I lived two blocks (3mn walk) from from Morrisseys house in WeHo. I found out about 2yrs before he moved to Italy. Met him first in 1993 outside the BookSoup instore signing with Johnny Rogan, Moz was with Jake. Saw him around town a few times. Met him at a Zutons gig a few years back. Saw him at a Coral gig at the Troubadour. Saw him at Bristol Farms twice and thats when it hit me, yeah yeah Morrissey Moz, Mozzer, he's just like me. He was dressed regular, and wasnt on stage. I wanna say that at that moment he was "Clark Kent".

Great anecdotes Jill!
I especially loved the Bristol Farms (a gourmet grocery store) part.
At one of the Pasadena shows last year, he mentioned Bristol Farms, and I thought to myself, "I can't imagine he's ever been inside one!"

Only once, outside the stage door at the Liverpool Royal Court Theatre in March '85 as the band got off the tour bus to go in and soundcheck.

I asked him to sign my Smiths records and he said, "Of course!", and signed them.

they'll always let you down,
they're just as shallow as you or me,
or worse than that they're clowns"

So spoke The Bluetones on their superb B-Side "Though You'd Be Taller".

I feel this would apply to Mozzer - if i had a chance to meet him, i'd have to think twice, as i think i'd hate him afterwards & the entire CD collection would be charity shop-bound.

Agree, and has anyone met him & what was your experience?

It always seems to me to be incredibly arrogant to not want to meet your heroes because they will let you down. Also a bit intolerant.

What makes people think they are so qualified to be the judge of another person on just a short meeting?

Seems to me that sort of sense of entitlement is rife in a lot of fans of famous people. If they are not what we think they should be then we have the right to condemn them for not measuring up to our standards.

How about just meeting someone and accepting them as they are?

On a different but related topic, about meeting band people,
Mrs Seeker and I were in Las Vegas to see Depeche Mode some years ago, and she wanted to meet Fletch. We were staying at the same hotel that they were playing at and staying at. We saw him by the pool but he was with his family so she didn't want to bother him in that setting, so when she saw him in the casino she approached and asked for an autograph. He just ignored her and "his people" told her to bugger off that he was relaxing.
She didn't take it well. Fletch should have been happy that anyone was actually interested in him at all. We met Martin Gore later in a club and he was the coolest guy. Mrs. Seeker was apprehensive to approach him, but he noticed her and invited her over to him.

Awww, Seeker, glad to hear meeting Martin Gore was a good experience for tha missus. Martin is my fave lad of DM.

As for Mozzer, I've met him in random spots besides planned appearances. He's always been very kind, interested, and generous with his time. I would love to meet him more often, but I won't go where I'm not invited. I won't stalk him even though he is too nice to the rude fux who invade his privacy.

I bumped into an old friend today who in 1992 sold my then tutor/boyfriend two tickets to see Morrissey at the Pacific Amphitheater. He was a ticket man in addition to a ton of other awesome not so wholesome professions that involve the exchange of money and odds. At any rate, the topic of Morrissey somehow came up and he said, "Oh yeah, I remember selling Evan those tickets. He came back from the concert and said he had a good time. He said that 'Morrissey had command of the audience, he sure knew how to work a crowd.' I'll never forget that."

Anyway, thought I'd share.

This is weird -- why was this post moved to a "meeting Morrissey" thread? She never met Moz, nor did this story talk about anyone else meeting Moz. I didn't think going to a concert means the same thing as meeting Moz. If going to his concert counts as meeting Moz, then most of us have met Moz at least once.

I agree. That post is totally irrelevant. I wouldn't count going to a concert of Moz (or anyone for that matter) as "meeting them". "Seeing them in person", yes, but not actually meeting. If that were the case, then I've met many of the famous musicians I've been dying to meet ;)

morrisseys comment on the occasions meeting his fans and what they mostly say to him

What's the most important thing a fan's ever said to you?
"People always say to me, 'You changed my life'. And most commonly they say to me, 'When I was a teenager, you really helped me through the death of my hamster' or things like that (laughs) and I just feel a flush of pride. Because I think it's quite something to help people through their darkest hours."

You must have changed a lot of lives over the years.
"For the better, I hope. (Laughs) I could have destroyed a few dozen lives along the way - I don't know."
