I thought it was about time us Mozzy-Mummy's and Daddy's had a little place to meet...to share our little parenting triumphs...and disasters!...to seek advise and support from other parents when the chips are down...and to gloat a bit on the odd occasion when we actually get things right!

Good idea darling! You are the Mummy when it comes to solo!

Your wise words after my "I'm a shit Mum" day yesterday have really helped. Though the image of my Noah throwing that Newborn around like an old dolly is still haunting me!!! Next week he is not leaving my side mate I can assure you!!!

Perhaps I should start a thread for any style dilemmas being the Wardrobe Mistress! I think I'm more suited to couture issues than childcare! ;)

My latest Mummy-related dilemma....

My six year old son has been cast as a reindeer in the school Christmas play. The problem is I can't get him to wear the costume...well he will wear MOST of the costume...but is refusing to don a pair of tights which his teacher is insisting on on the grounds that tights "are for girls!" and they are just not "cool!"....

"But Spiderman wears tights and he is REALLY cool!"

"Yeah...but Spiderman doesn't have to wear them with a pair of antlers!"

I guess he does have a point!

Guess I'll just have to employ that good old Mummy staple...good old fashioned BRIBERY!

My son was horrid at 3...the spawn of the devil himself!....I would be pushing him around the supermarket in the trolly whilst he screamed blue murder for no reason WHATSOEVER and seriously thought many times about just bloody leaving him there!

Glad I didn't though...he's six now and a great little boy...just take a deep breath and remember...it really is just a phase (I have hated people that have told me over the years that my childcare concerns were "just a phase"...but they were usually right!)

I am lucky that my boy is pretty good most of the time, we did have tantrums at 2 but they passed. I recall one time when he was about that age, maybe younger and his dad and I were looking at a book on the floor, the cat jumped up at the kitchen door startling Dylan who yelled fu***** fright! it was then that we decided to stop swearing, well as much as possible anyway.
He is at the moment sulking cause I am not taking him to see Morrissey.

Welcome to the wonderful world of PASTA! ;)

You'd think my kids were Italian instead of mostly Irish. That's all the little lifesucking bastards will eat. One must have marinara, one will only eat it plain.

Last night I didn't make them anything separate from what we were eating, because I am DONE cooking two separate meals. So I put before them a plate containing a delicious garlic pan-roasted brussels sprout, a slice of grilled polenta, and one mushroom tart. You would have thought I was ripping their fingernails off. I poured another glass of wine and let Daddy sort it out.

They just started a great new thing at their school. It has a significant percentage of low-income kids, and the school just got a grant that lets them provide free breakfast to all children. So I don't have to feed them in the morning, I just drop them off and they eat first thing while the teachers read to them and do attendance. The breakfasts are decent, various whole grain cereal, milk, juice, and a piece of fruit. I'm going to save so much money on Cheerios it's not even funny.

I have one who will only eat chicken, and one who will only eat red meat. Somebody's always whining.

...and only cuz I don't know where else to post this...

We keep seeing commercials for the new Alvin (chipmunks) movie -p.s. Did Jason Lee REALLY have to do this film?! dude. Anyway... My 7 yr old daughter likes the part where the one is singing "don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me" (I think he's singing it while bathing in the dishwasher?) and so she was singing that all night, inserting other words for 'Girlfriend' and 'Me' getting some laughs from her parents. Then she sings to me "Don't you wish Daddy was hot like Morrissey"... ROTFLMAO :D (um, yes child)

p.s. I'm just glad she doesn't know the actual Pussycat Doll song.

My kids tell me they hate casseroles...so now I cook the casserole and put the sauce in a jug on the table seperately...then it becomes gravy!...which they do like...and they devour it without complaint....a dirty rotten trick I know....but "where there's a will there's a way!" ;)

That describes ours pretty well, at least the twins (our eldest's tastes are now influenced by school lunches and, worse, her best friend down the street). You wouldn't believe our fresh fruits & veggies bill every week. On the upside, it's done wonders for their growth and development--the docs can't believe that they were preemies; they've always told us to expect the twins to be runts with learning problems.

Edward worries us because he eats so little and is small for his age (10). All we can really do, is pack plenty of goodness into what he can manage and make sure he gets his vitamin supplement. Tom, on the other hand, is 16, 6ft tall and an eating machine!

It was my grandfather's name, although that's not really why I chose it. His middle name is Frederick, after a good (and sadly childless) friend of ours. I had a fancy to call him Wolfgang but Stig vetoed that.:( He gets "Eddie-Freddy", but he also calls himself "E-war" because he has notions of a world without the letter "d", "Wereward", after his speech-impaired cousin's early attempts at his name, and simply "Small Boy." At school, to his friends, he's "Eddie", which has a classic cool to it, I think.

It was my grandfather's name, and both of the grandfathers on the other side. Edward Frederick was one of those. Also assorted uncles. I love it because it is definitely classic cool, and has so many nicknames.

When he was tiny I called him "Edbug," he's been "Squidward," and he's mostly Eddie. But when he meets new people he gets a little formal and introduces himself as Edward. It suits him so well.

I think that there are only about 5 different first names between all the girls in my eldest's school. In her class alone there are two others, and both of her teachers have daughters with the same name. They all look the same, too. I should petition the City Council to rename our town "Stepford."

Beat you to it! Actually we don't have the proper tree up yet, but I've bought a couple of Christmassy plant pots from Morrisons, we have some starry twinkly lights up and a poinsietta. The advent calendars have already been opened, Jamie opened up number 16 by mistake, hope this doesn't mean a month of bad luck?

Jamie was being a total shithead yesterday. I'd bought him tickets for Hearts -v- Celtic today, but he'd planned for his wee friend to come around, and I was the bitch-mother-from-hell who'd caused him this inconvenience. No amount of reasonining would get through his obstinate head and he went away to Cubs with a scowl upon his face.

However, upon returning, he said to me "I think I owe you an apology" and we had a cuddle and everything was alright again!

I remember when I was a little girl advent calenders didn't have chocolate in...my Dad would get me one from church with little religious pictures behind each little door...and on Christmas Eve you always had a much larger door with the nativity scene inside...it was VERY exciting!....now if if ain't a chocolate treat they don't want to now....where oh where did all the magic go!

My 6 year old has been agitating for the tree for like 2 weeks, but I refuse to put it up before the first weekend in December. Lucky him it' s 1 DEC today, so I struggled with the fake tree (which branches go where? Oh, wait, now it's hourglass shaped!) for over an hour, and the boys spent about 4 minutes hanging all the ornaments in one big clump at bottom center. Ah, well. . .it's pretty and Christmasy in here now and I do enjoy it.

At my house we take in a lot of stray animals. Well, my puppy has this problem where she tries to eat the cat's food all the time (she loves it for some reason!). So I kept her off the porch while the cats ate so that she couldn't eat their food. While they ate, I gave her some dog food, but the chickens ate it. So I fed her again after the chickens left, but then one of the cats (a wild one) started eating her food. She tried to make the cat leave, but it got pissed and scratched her across the face.:( Needless to say, the cat quickly fled in order to avoid my wrath and having a shoe thrown at it.

Had a very Christmassy day with my little two. We put the Christmas tree up this morning and some tinsel on the gum tree in the backyard. Our advent calender chocolate is also getting eaten before breakfast!

And after lunch we went to the 'Magic Cave', although my kids don't like to sit on Santa's knee (which I'm fine with)....i think they just like the free helium balloon. As we came down our street on the way home, we saw Santa driving a convertible!!! My daughters mouth was wide open!

Last night was super cool at the museum. I went on the Millennium Falcon (5 minute cockpit show/simulation) and took my time thru the Star Wars exhibit. 'twas pretty cool seeing all the models and clothes -everything had tags about what episodes they were in -and interactive stuff. All the adults there were like kids in a candy shop.

oh what a mess! the day was going so well..until...

picking children up from Thursday Football, Jamie was in a huff because his side were losing and his mood didn't improve while we were walking home. I playfully squirted some water over him - he then grabbed the bottle and took the top off before drenching me in what was left of the water. He then turned to me, eyes full of hate, said slowly "b-i-t-c-h" then stormed off in another huffy puff. He stomped off in the direction of home, past the bus stop which me and Shaun weere waiting at. Despite me calling him til I was hoarse, he just ignored me and kept walking.

Me and Shaun went to Morrisons for a slap-up-tea, then meandered home.
Jamie was waiting for us at the front door. I asked for an apology, never got one, so I swung my handbag to hit him over the head, calling him a little shit-bag. Off upstairs in an even bigger huff, then comes downstairs and walks out the front door, saying he's going to live with his dad (who is a piss-head who can't take care of himself, never mind a 10 year old).

I grab the dog's lead and go out to try and find him, he has no idea where his dad lives, some of the neighbourhood kids shout at me that they've found him. So we come back home, and I've had to lock the door so he can't get out again. He still isn't speaking to either of us.

He's now swearing in the toilet (I'm in the fuckin toilet) banging his head on the doorway saying he doesn't want to live here anymore and generally just snivelling.

I can't deal with him anymore! Take him away!!

Edit: he;s beginning to apologise now!

That's truly disgusting. Even more disgusting than the apparatus designed by some guy my DH knows. It's a small fabric backpack, and a set of tubing. You put your baby's bottle in the backpack, and connect the tubing to a nipple. Baby drinks his formula and parents barely have to touch him.

The guy actually sent around a set for me. Me, the quasi-militant breastfeeder. I did not send him a thank you note.

What does that mean? I never heard that before.

On a local talk show, I once heard the co-host mention that one of his young children was sick with a cold and had a case of the snots, and he said he saw the nanny/caretaker put her mouth over the child's nose and suck out the snots. He said it nearly made him sick to see her suck the gunk out of his child's nose, but on the other hand was elated that this woman cared so much for his child that she would do that.

As gross as it sounds, it makes perfect sense to do. The child can't clear out their nose so the easiest way to do it is to suck it out. We do it with mini suck bulb things when they are tiny infants, but when the get to one or more, we just let it drip and flow and rub their little face raw with tissues.

Green 11- look at child's upper lip. See the 11? And it's green.

I don't buy antibacterial soaps and don't stress about germs. I make them wash their hands often with regular soap. They get one or two minor colds per year, and between the two of them, there has been only one ear infection. My cleanfreak friends' kids seem to catch every bug that goes through.

I'm not taking full responsibility, though, we might just be lucky.

I also don't really medicate them when they are sick. It's almost impossible to get them to take so much as kids' Tylenol. I just give them lots of cozy baths and use saline to keep their noses drained.

icky parent talk.

Good for you not getting all that anti-bacterial crap... good ol soap and water is best -and 'friction' is the key (but you know this) That anti-bacterial stuff is the beginning of the end (anti-biotic resistant infections) People tend to overmedicate their kids too. I don't. Just myself. :D

I'd say that luck is a big part of it. We didn't medicate our oldest very often; she'd get ear infections, and many times we'd let the infection take its course. With the twins, though, the idea of leaving the infections alone was torturous--they'd keep each other awake, they'd pass the infections back and forth so that there were cycles where one or the other (or both) would be sick continuously for two or three months. Nightmarish.

The twins' preschool is militantly germophobic--they have the kids wash their hands seemingly every couple of minutes. The other day, the insisted that the kids re-wash their hands (re-wash because everyone's required to wash their hands before they leave the house to go to school) before they would be allowed to cut shapes in biscuits. I tried to point out that baking the dough at 350 would kill just about anything that the kids may have dragged in, but the looks of horror that I got quickly silenced me. Ridiculous.

Hello out there all you parents! I am not a parent (which is a good thing in many ways - both for me and the world) - but I am an aunt... and I absolutely love being an aunt and spending time with the kids...

Here is a song that I discovered the children love to listen to:

The Teddy Bear's Picnic by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman:

The kids know every word and sing it often - I have seen this happen with several kids I have introduced it to... perhaps you and your kids will enjoy it as much as we did.

This is all pretty sound.I`ve a friend who`s a clean freak and her kids are always ill.It makes sense-the more germs they come into contact with (I`m not talking about salmonella etc...)the better. You can`t build an immunity to anything if its all dust free and sterilised.I think with food you`ve got to be really careful - but as toddlers mine regularly chewed on a worm or two.:o

I`ve got a really annoying relative whoi haven`t seen in ages and she won`t bring my kids cousins around because we have dogs and they are asthmatic. What rubbish! A friends daughter is severley asthmatic and her doctor father bought her a dog!!You cannot sheild your children from everything.

I'm convinced that many people just say that they're allergic (is that what you meant?) to something or other in order to get out social obligations. Hell, I would, too, if I thought that I could keep the ruse up.

I hope that's what Hellie was implying. I have an 8 yr old nephew who is very allergic to dogs, in fact they had to give their golden retriever (their 1st born! :p) to my other brother to take care of. I've seen first hand his reactions and it's pretty scary. His 2 bros and parents are fine, seems HE got all the allergies, poor thing.

I believe peeps when they say they have animal allergies...and with my 2 cats, well that's less company prep-housework I have to do

No rudeness or disrespect intended here, but what does "DH" stand for?
Drunk Husband? Designated Hitter? Domestic Helpmate? or something simple like his initials?
Or if it's private, never mind.

If that's the case, then don't underestimate the power of barf-bag puppets. Seriously. Kept my kids (at the time, 4, 1, and 1) quite entertained. But don't break out the puppets until absolutely necessary--like during the last hour of the flight.

The barf-bag puppet trick worked! We were on the flight home & the little one did not want his seatbelt on....so I got out the bag, did a bit of puppet action & he was so entertained that he forgot all about his seatbelt! Thanks for the tip....they then both slept for the rest of the flight.

What a great thread....can't believe I just saw it for the first time!

My three kids, ages 11,10, and 10, all received a few extra Christmas presents this year....they knew the way to my heart by asking, "please Mommy would you put lots of Morrissey songs on our ipods?"

I told them they were the best kids ever! It's not so easy finding people who will allow me to indulge in my passion for Morrissey!

Perhaps I should have more children!

Oh, I'm glad that he was OK. Our twins were 6 weeks early, which is about 3 weeks earlier than twins in general. We were told to expect a long stay in the incubator, and lots of subsequent developmental issues. But they were sent home with us about 44 hours after they were born, perfectly healthy. Yay for them, sucked for us!

I almost gave up on ever training my son. Finally, a few weeks before he turned three, I told him I'd buy him a bike if he started using the toilet...
he was using the potty by the end of the next day....

If you're 35, is that too old to start having kids?

Are you asking for a biology lesson? The answer is no.

Has anyone here ever tried adoption?

"Tried," as in adopted a kid and then changed your mind? That's probably frowned on in most quarters.

def not. My aunt had her first at 40ish and I know others who had children later than that.
Adoption well I think that is something that has to be really looked into, ie what area you are in so on.

vicarinatutugal
January 10, 2008, 05:33 PM
No,
I'm being totally serious. Has anyone here been through the process/paperwork for starting an adoption?

As for a biology lesson, there's always a way for women too, to go to a sperm bank for artificial insemination. Martha Stewart's daughter, Alexis is supposed to be doing that b/c she's older too, but, wants a child.

I just hope before I die, I have a child, either naturally or by adoption b/c, I want a large family. I hope to have 4 sons, laugh all you want.... oh well, I care.

Why would people laugh! I mean ok maybe heart on the sleeve stuff is a bit much for some people on a forum but I think its good you want to have a family.
I think it is something you would have to really look into of course, check out all your options and see what suits you best, of course it would not be a decision to take lightly. I say, check out all the options, and see where you go from there.

I know that you were being serious. I have friends who have gone through the adoption process, including some who backed out before any adoption took place. It's grueling, and expensive. You have to prove your fitness as a parent in a way that biological parents never have to. It's very invasive, and takes quite a while (months, even years).

No, I mean a biology lesson as to the maximum age at which most women can get pregnant. After 35, the risks of certain birth defects and complications go up considerably.

No to question 1, Yes to question 2.

My DH and i were in the process of learning about domestic open adoptions and put it on hold to research having a child via surrogacy...and by the grace of God, it worked. So, I had my first daughter at 34 and my second at 38 -> well, my 33 yr old 'sister' did for me :sweet:.

My 7 yr old is going on a Brownie/Girl Scout camping trip today thru Sunday in WisCONsin -2 hours from here. It's the first time she's ever been gone without it being a family member that she's with.

I wasn't worried until two of my friends -one kid is going, the other is not- got me thinking about the weather, the bus trip, the handful of adults and senior girls going... One friend isn't going if Mother's cannot come. "7 is too young to be without Mom" I'm like... I don't think so, does that make me a neglectful, uncaring Mom?! (no)

I thought you were already going ahead with an adoption, didn't you have the names picked out and everything? (something religious like Jesus or Abraham I seem to remember) But then again, that was a previous user name, and perhaps things have changed since then.

35 isn't too old for a natural birth, but you'd have to take into account your own general health, bloodpressure etc. Speak to your GP about it?

This baby is teething, and he is driving me up the wall!
He just yells at me, and I don't know how to help him! He's had tylenol and orajel. He won't eat right, his naps are short, and my edges are FRAYED!!! He's so cute, bless his baby heart. I'm going to take him to the doctor and see if they can't give him something for his suffering.
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Good luck!

Oh I would recommend a whistle wholeheartedly...the children at school FREEZE when I blow it...it's fabulous! :D

Can't quite get used to being called "Miss" though!

:tears: so I dropped my son off at school there, I had walked him right near the gate, normally I take him to the end of the road and watch him run up to the crossing but he has a bit of a rotten cold so I did not want him running. I went to give him a hug as normal but NO! clearly he is too old for a hug near school, I get it, I really do, friends about and stuff but oh my god, talk about lump in the throat upset.. :tears: :tears: poor mummy, feeling sorry for herself.

Awww!...poor you...Dan (who is six) is exactly the same!

Take last night...Mr Reallymatters was working the night-shift at the local constabulary...at 1am Dan sneaked into my bed and wrapped his little arms and legs around me and feel asleep sucking his thumb and stroking my cheek (not the most comfortable of nights for me but hard to resist the little scamp!) Then this morning at school in front of his mates...no BLOODY kiss...not even a peck! Thank goodness for little girls though as Rachel (who is two years older) gave me a right old smacker and didn't care who was watching! :D

My 7 yr old said to me this morning “You know what I was singing while getting dressed? “So I sit and I smile and I say well-done to the girl….” Attagirl!! :D

For black history month, her class is doing reports on famous/influential African Americans. I helped her chose Stevie Wonder from a list. Of the handful of songs I have, she’s decided that ‘Golden Lady’ is her favorite. I have to chuckle as the directions say each child will ‘have a chance to present their reports WHILE ‘dressing the part’. Hmm…keyboard, tie-dye shirt, dark shades and a perma-smile =o) If anyone has a really unique piece of Stevie trivia for the paper, I’ll take it. She gets to research on the internet…hmmpf! In MY day we went to the library!!!....

Totally. It looks like something out a Tim Burton film. I half expect to see some zombies in Victorian dress walk into the view.

My nearly two year old moved into his single bed last night - he only fell out once!

I took the cot out of the room...it was kind of sad. And I never got around to taking a picture of him sleeping in his cot.

Awww, such a big step! We just sold our twins' cribs on Saturday--made all the harder because the model name is the same as our eldest's name, if that makes sense. :tears:

Now we have to sell the other two pairs of cribs from the grandparents' houses...
