The odds were well and truly in favour of Rangers tonight. They were desperate to join city rivals Celtic in the knockout stage.

Before the game, Rangers held the upper hand. All they had to do was avoid defeat.

To further boost their hopes, the SPL gave Rangers last weekend off, in an unprecedented move to help their chances of advancing in the Champions League. The pressure was all on Lyon because they had to come and win in front of a capacity home crowd but Rangers failed when they were beaten 3 - 0 at home, resulting in Rangers once again being knocked out of the competition before the knock out stages.

Well rested Rangers have now not won any of their last eight home encounters with French opposition, drawing three and losing five of them. The last time the Glasgow club beat a visiting French side was in September 1971 when they overcame Stade Rennais FC 1-0 in a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first-round tie.

The line-up for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League was completed tonight as Olympique Lyonnais and Fenerbahçe SK claimed the final two berths in the knockout rounds at the expense of Rangers FC and PSV Eindhoven.

The French and Turkish champions join six other runners-up and eight group winners in the Friday 21 December (12.00CET) draw for the next stage at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.

PLEASE, DON'T EVER COME BACK AGAIN

Dear Rangers supporters- never come back to Barcelona again. And not because your players themselves aren't a legitimate team. No, it's not because of that- the Nou Camp frequently hosts teams who are lazy, boring, who only defend, who run and kick their opponents, and who shouldn't be in elite competition. On top of this, Rangers merely defend, run at the opposition and play dirty. Their defenders are butchers, their midfielders, heavy-footed; and their strikers just stand there like the furniture.

But even apart from the footballing aspect, the best thing would be for Rangers never to return to Barcelona, because every time they do, they make a mess of the place. 35 years ago, you (the Rangers supporters) destroyed the seats at the Nou Camp. This time we have enjoyed no less than 48 hours of brawls, provocation, rackets, fights and common drunk women throughout the whole city, which you have fouled however you pleased.

Stay at home and vomit in your own living-room, urinate in your sitting-room corners, fight with your neighbours, the Celtic supporters (who deserve a prize just for putting up with you) and foul the streets of Glasgow instead. Don't come back here again, because it is not a laughing matter. And, by extension, don't play in the Champions' League either. You are not at that level neither in a sporting nor human sense.

There are noisy groups of supporters who, although they drink vast amounts of beer, make friends at the same time. But you? Not you, because everywhere you go, you turn into a rubbish tip. You are undesirables. And so are those who fraudulently sell, or "rent out" their tickets. These people screw Barca over, because they trade their season tickets illegally. And in doing this they cause massive annoyance for other members of the club. A true Barcelona fan would not re-sell their ticket for the match. If you are not going to the match, give it to a family member, or you could even use the 'Seient Lliure' service (an automated ticket service used by some Spanish clubs including Barcelona).

From now on, the responsibility lies with UEFA and the club itself to ensure who the ticket is sold to. The best thing for all of us would be that you as a supporter, in a moment of lucidity, decide not to travel if you do not have tickets. As that is never going to happen, those who sell the tickets illegally must be brought to justice. But the best thing would be if we never had to play Rangers again.

PLEASE, DON'T EVER COME BACK AGAIN

Dear Rangers supporters- never come back to Barcelona again. And not because your players themselves aren't a legitimate team. No, it's not because of that- the Nou Camp frequently hosts teams who are lazy, boring, who only defend, who run and kick their opponents, and who shouldn't be in elite competition. On top of this, Rangers merely defend, run at the opposition and play dirty. Their defenders are butchers, their midfielders, heavy-footed; and their strikers just stand there like the furniture.

But even apart from the footballing aspect, the best thing would be for Rangers never to return to Barcelona, because every time they do, they make a mess of the place. 35 years ago, you (the Rangers supporters) destroyed the seats at the Nou Camp. This time we have enjoyed no less than 48 hours of brawls, provocation, rackets, fights and common drunk women throughout the whole city, which you have fouled however you pleased.

Stay at home and vomit in your own living-room, urinate in your sitting-room corners, fight with your neighbours, the Celtic supporters (who deserve a prize just for putting up with you) and foul the streets of Glasgow instead. Don't come back here again, because it is not a laughing matter. And, by extension, don't play in the Champions' League either. You are not at that level neither in a sporting nor human sense.

There are noisy groups of supporters who, although they drink vast amounts of beer, make friends at the same time. But you? Not you, because everywhere you go, you turn into a rubbish tip. You are undesirables. And so are those who fraudulently sell, or "rent out" their tickets. These people screw Barca over, because they trade their season tickets illegally. And in doing this they cause massive annoyance for other members of the club. A true Barcelona fan would not re-sell their ticket for the match. If you are not going to the match, give it to a family member, or you could even use the 'Seient Lliure' service (an automated ticket service used by some Spanish clubs including Barcelona).

From now on, the responsibility lies with UEFA and the club itself to ensure who the ticket is sold to. The best thing for all of us would be that you as a supporter, in a moment of lucidity, decide not to travel if you do not have tickets. As that is never going to happen, those who sell the tickets illegally must be brought to justice. But the best thing would be if we never had to play Rangers again.

The above extracts are just a sample of the debate in the Catalonian media following Rangers visit in November, after which, Stuttgart fans, who have an exemplary international reputation, were on the receiving end of a backlash from police and a local authority keen to take effective action.

To make matters worse, local elections are being held in Catalonia the week Celtic play there, giving the authorities every incentive to show their mettle.

The experiences from recent visits with Celtic to Barcelona will be very different next month, as the policing and security procedures will be very different.

Celtic and FC Barcelona are making an effort to assure the authorities that Celtic fans are a different proposition to Rangers fans.

Pretty much every visiting team to Barcelona are a different proposition to Rangers fans, however, this did not help lower the state of alert for the visit of Stuttgart.

Celtic fans are unsure of how to prepare to follow Rangers fans into Barcelona, as they expect many potentially contentious actions will be taken after participating in judgement-altering libations, but being forewarned of the likely reception is as good a place to start as any.

Although a lot of ordinary citizens in Barcelona are drawing distinctions between Celtic and Rangers. This will have no bearing on how the officials treat the Celtic fans.

The number of Stuttgart fans fined on the spot for "public order offences" (mostly of the drinking and bladder-relieving variety) was in the three figures, even though there was absolutely no bother.

The number of Celtic fans thought to be travelling without a ticket has dropped massivley due to a the fear of a backlash from over zealous police. It is now thought that only 8,000 will travel. Too many people scared they wont be able to find a toilet and end up finding a fine.

On the funny side. I've heard of Celtic fans suggesting blue bags are brought over from Scotland to put rubbish created in to.

I've decided I'm not going. I'm going to wait until the final.

Normally it’s just when Barça has to play against a Scottish team when people, press, police, etc. are scared because their supporters are apparently more problematic than any others. I suppose it’s because they travel en masse and many of them without tickets for the match and they finish with all the beer stock of Barcelona every time they come here :D

CELTIC Football Club have thanked the people of Barcelona for once again playing host to the club and its supporters when they meet FC Barcelona on March 4 in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Celtic and Barcelona have met twice in recent years – in March 2004 in the UEFA Cup and then in November of the same year in the UEFA Champions League.

And both of those occasions, the people of Barcelona have been the perfect hosts, welcoming Celtic supporters to their city. The games also strengthened the bonds between both clubs.

BARCELONA will invite 5000 Celtic fans to a sunshine street party when they arrive for a Champions League match next month.
Civic officials have set up a special Fan Zone at the Plaza De Espana, near the city's Olympic stadium, for the clash on March 4.

It is understood Barcelona decided to introduce the Fan Zone after locals were angered by the behaviour of a visiting Rangers fans last year.

Fearing fans of their city rivals may behave similarly, Officials have also taken the unusual step of taking out an advert in the Scottish press.

It reads: "During your stay in Barcelona, remember that the action is on the pitch and not in the street. Please help us keep the host city as clean and tidy as you find it.

"Whoever wins on the pitch, we can't let the city lose."

But last night, doubts were cast on how many fans of the Scottish club would turn up.

The Fan Zone will be on the edge of the city, far from the bars and restaurants of the famed Las Ramblas.

One fan said: "It looks as if the authorities are trying to keep the fans out of the city. But you can't force supporters to spend time on the outskirts of Barcelona if they don't want to."

Locals were angry when Rangers fans turned up in vast numbers in November for a Champions League match. City papers were full of reports of drunken antics and public urinating.

Barcelona Mayor Jordi Hereu wrote to Britain's Consul General in the city, deploring the conduct of the Rangers fans.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "There was a meeting this week, involving Celtic, Barcelona, Strathclyde Police, the Foreign Office and the Spanish authorities.

"It is unusual for the Spanish to see football supporters taking their tops off and drinking large quantities of alcohol.

"All parties are now looking at ways fans can enjoy themselves without causing offence to the locals."

I'm very proud of Celtic. To make it to the last 16 in the CL. A Barcelona player costs more than the entire Celtic team. Our back four cost £500,000. It was a pleasure to watch such a great team and to meet such great fans.

On the way from the stadium to my car I passed the last Barça fans leaving Celtic Park. Both sets of fans were mixing in a mutual appreciation society type way. It was fun to sing songs with them and hear the Spanish accent in Celtic songs. That included Celtic fans singing 'Celteek!', mimicking our newly aquatinted Catalan friends.

This was meant to be a photo but after a couple of failed attempts, I switched to video. I took some more but regret not thinking to do that earlier.

On the way from the stadium to my car I passed the last Barça fans leaving Celtic Park. Both sets of fans were mixing in a mutual appreciation society type way. It was fun to sing songs with them and hear the Spanish accent in Celtic songs. That included Celtic fans singing 'Celteek!', mimicking our newly aquatinted Catalan friends.

For example, Celtic with Benfica. Benfica have lost out in the Champions League to Celtic two seasons in a row but have earned more coefficient points in each season.
