Here's mine: "In This Heart" by Sinéad O'Connor.

Great song. That was one of the best songs (energy level) in concert when I saw them at a small venue in Oct '06. I really like Sam's Town -I've been trying to get into Sawdust but it's not really hooking me yet...

Speaking of energy and obsessions, I was listening to Big Audio Dynamite's Megatop Phoenix yesterday and I'm re-hooked up with a favorite. Love this album.

Duran Duran

“Box full o’honey”

Simon: “It’s my best lyric on the album. I can see the person I’m writing about, my ‘queen of tumbledown.’ No, I won’t say who she is. People seem to be able to really relate to this song. It touches them in an emotional way.”

“Tempted”

Nick: “It was instant smiles as soon as we gave in to our disco temptation. Which is always a good sign. It’s like a song inside a mirror ball.”

For my whole life I've been obsessed with the same two songs. There was a weird jukebox at this restaurant where my parents used to go, and these were the only two good songs on it. They'd stay there for hours talking and drinking and to get me out from under the table I was given pocket money to amuse myself, which today is called "bad parenting." One time I played the first song five times in a row, and they unplugged the jukebox and took away my quarters.

I really like the song 'Gloomy Sunday' and I've been collecting various versions of it for a while. I have a framed copy on my wall of the original Billie Holiday 78 rpm disc.

I'm pretty sure Morrissey used it as a source in the song 'Asleep' when he sang, "Deep in the cell of my heart I will feel so glad to go..." because in Gloomy Sunday it says "Let them not weep, let them know that I'm glad to go..."

It's probably the saddest song ever written, known generally as 'The Hungarian Suicide Song' or 'A Song Of Love And Death'.

The story about it inducing suicidal thoughts upon hearing it is to be taken with a pinch of salt. I think those already that way inclined are drawn to it, that's all. It has a very beautiful melody and is incredibly seductive.
