I don't celebrate Christmas. I'm a muslim.

In Italy I read in some papers that in Britain you now have cards like "Season's greetings" for Christmas. Is that really true?

yes I suppose you do have that instead of Merry christmas, I like a christmas greeting myself.
I have a friend who is making all her own xmas cards rather than buying it and I think it will work out more expensive but she is creative.

It is, terribly boring and all, people just can't let it be an ordinary day. You always get disappointed. To be with strangers in a tin can 10 000 meters over the ocean with an iPod, that's entertainment (except if there's children under 15, it seems impossible for them to behave).

Brought all my pressies already..
Plasytation 3 for boyf,
automatic watch for me (from him, so technically hes done his shopping too)
and a couple of rose bushes for his parents (on request)

Although these are the only pressies i shall be buying, as i am an orphan with no family. (thankgod)

I made our christmas cake in august  and a large jar of pickled eggs is stewing in a cupboard somewhere (made about a month ago).
I have all the christmas cards ready, just need to write them, (again there wont be many) and i have even been stocking up on a few foody items such as wine when ive been grocery shopping, so that i dont have to go for more than fresh fruit/veg before christmas, i hate supermarkets, and i hate them even more during december.

ooo you are indeed organised, I am lucky in the fact that since we go to my parents I really do not have to buy food or make cakes stuff like that, we are pairing it down a bit this year and having a less hassled xmas, my mum tends to go over board on the cooking although we all tend to help out in some way.
We have little traditions in my family like we always make sweets on christmas eve, its so much fun and now my own son is involved as well its even better, actually I think my mum and I enjoy it more than him.

I'm a christmas eve shopper...i love the rush & the push of the crowds! But this year I will be on a beachside holiday the week before, so I'm planning to do a bit of shopping whilst there. Hoping that there may be different pressie ideas.

I also make gingerbread men with the kids, who love the decorating part & a few slices & biscuits. I also make all my cards/gift tags and wrap.

I really do not think I could cope with the xmas eve shopping thing, I know people who do that but it is not for me.
I usually go in town on the eve or the day before cause there is usually something I need and even in a little town like the one I live in it can be really hectic.

I get annoyed though if I buy something then see it reduced a week later this happened with the nintendo ds I got my son, there was a better offer a week later in another store, however I am just glad I have it.
I do think you are right about the rush feeling more christmassy.

Hear me out...

I hate Christmas and I think it's because I used to work in retail for many years when I was younger. It was in a music shop, but I could still see the disgusting hypocritical ways people act. They act like animals. They are nasty.
I refuse to go to the mall or any chain store between the months of Dec-Feb because I feel I might kick someone in the face. God forbid you don't clog up the highways to get to Wal-Mart to get your cheap ass peice of shit gift for a relative you don't like.
I don't think I am going to particpate in X-mas this year with my family or friends. I'm gonna take a stand (and save some money).

Further more, I'm an atheist so it gives me even more reason to not celebrate. When I see these soccer moms act like heathens in the stores it contradicts what Christmas is supposed to mean to them.

Merry Christmas:)

Actually... I bought my parents their Christmas gift this weekend. Ever since my father retired my mother has a hard time finding time where she can use the computer. He just. sits. there. all. day. long.

So I bought my mother her own Apple iBook while I was in Atlantic City. So now she has her own laptop and can go anywhere in her home with it.

I`m an aetheist but I still celebrate Christmas. My children do believe in God and i encourage them to have their own beliefs.

Even though I`m not religious i do love the Christmas story and i`m reduced to a sobbing wreck when the little ones are in the nativity at school.

I hate some things about it.Its all become a greed thing....however when you know that you`re gonna leave Santa a mince pie and Rudolph a carrot and get woken up at five in the morning it takes on a whole new appeal.;)

I don't find it sad at all, in fact its a relief, they are SO DIFFERENT from me, and just have scorn and hate for my beliefs. so i decided to end all contact, ive realised since discovering Moz that life is but a jot and not worth wasting on those who dont get you/appreciate you.

You know what? I have been thinking the very same thing - it is the forced happiness of it that depresses me. It can never live up to your expectations. I don't know....it's strange. But I honestly felt this way at 9 years old, which I think is odd. All kids are supposed to like Christmas.

I have a fantastically happy family, by the way. We are close, and enjoy each others company whenever we get together. I am very, very lucky in that regard. But I have still always hated Xmas.

She actually trades sketches on a regular basis with her artistic mentor Chet Zar . He offered her apprenticeship when she is older and has written letters of recommendation for her to include in her applications to art schools.

Cam DeLeon loves her work as well

That is a hella good idea !

I think that for her 1st machine i will find a reasonably priced 3 , 4 or 6 station press and if she produces like i expect she will then i will buy her the best one i can find for her birthday (which is May 22nd btw )

check some of her graphite work from when she was 12 at her myspace page

After 18 years, my parents are finally coming to spend a low key Xmas with me up in DC. They've talked about it for years but always bag out because of the grandkids (my sisters). I flew down south the past two years and wasnt planning on going this year anyway.

you happy about this? does this mean you have to cook and stuff like that?
I have to say I am rather glad we always go to my parents, I mean we all help with the cooking that but if I had to do everything in my own house I might have a melt down.

yea, i'll be cooking but since it will just be me and the parents that's no big deal. it's much more stressful going to visit them - mainly cuz my sister is always at war with somebody...

I actually did a bit of xmas shopping after first reading this thread!!

However, there is one toy of the list - Bindeez, won toy of the year in Australia - but it has put a few yong children in a coma as the glue in the product was actually GBH!!! I had to gather all the ones we had & take them back. But the xmas catalogues are still advertising them.

Oh, a xmas question, I've been reading my daughter the Rainbow Magic christmas book & they got to Santas Grotto - why is it named a grotto? Over here its the Magic Cave.

I did not want a real tree. I didnt have one as a kid except once or twice, and I thought I really wanted one then but then I saw what a pain they can be, and I prefer plastic, easier to put decorations on, no mess, no tossing out into the garbage. Jason was having none of it this year. he MUST have a real tree. I was like....*sigh* ooookkkk. Its lopsided bc we cut it terribly.

and NRitH there are several Xmas tree farms around Balto and carroll counties, and in fact there was one not 40 minutes from Tampa, thats where we got a real tree once when I was a kid. they exist you just have to find them :)

and NRitH there are several Xmas tree farms around Balto and carroll counties, and in fact there was one not 40 minutes from Tampa, thats where we got a real tree once when I was a kid. they exist you just have to find them :)

A real tree is the real thing.... It smells soooooooo nice. It means Christmas to me! :)

well I am not sure on the "rules" but I know it should be down by jan 6th.
I do not really go with traditions but here people have them up all different times, my American friends have their tree up for thanksgiving which is the 25th november I think. Many trees have been up since the 1st of December, but I think its a bit early, my son has not been going on about it yet. I would like it up for his birthday which is the 12th.
I tent to have mine up for then generally.

As a Hungarian I find it really weird :o We put up the tree only on the 24th of December, and it's an important family thing. Done usually without the kids, cause they're told that the Christmas tree and the presents are brought by Baby Jesus. And it has to be down by 6 January, at least that's common. ;)

so - I'm going to a White Elephant Gift Exchange this weekend for my running group. Porn is always a big hit so I'm giving away 4 hours of never viewed (still in the wrapper) lesbian porn. Should I wrap it by itself for an extra gift (we go in order of number of runs and start over if we have more presents than people) or include it with the t-shirt and wine? Keep in mind if it's all together, it has to be taken together if it gets "stolen" by a more senior member...

oh I think it is common to get the kids involved, we always do the tree together in my family, however there is usually fall outs regarding the lights, I suggested a fiber optic tree this year and my son was really shocked, he wants to put the baubles and things on together so that is what we will do. I think it is a nice sentiment you have but here it is most definately santa who brings the pressies. http://88.198.58.241/iconarchive.com/icons/live-pencil/christmas-smilies/santa-2-icon.gif

I know that, thanks to the huge amount of Christmas movies made by the Americans. :D If I was a kid today, I would be totally confused about who brings the presents at Christmas. Our Santa is called Mikulás, St Nicholas, and he sees the kids on the dawn of St Nicholas day (6 December). Kids put their (nicely cleaned) boots in the window and if they were good, Mikulás puts chocolate and little presents in them. But if they were bad, all they receive is virgács, a bunch of twigs, painted in gold. :D It's a kind of pre-christmas, great when you just can't wait to get to Christmas!

We put ours up after thanksgiving because my husband cannot wait to get the holiday started. it takes me a good 2 weeks after thanksgiving to really get into the whole thing but he loves it so much we just go ahead and put it up after thanksgiving.

I know that is the original tradition, the parents putting up the tree on christmas eve, but baby jesus delivering it? Wow thats different for me.

we loved the hogfather when it was on last year, I was sorry to hear that Terry Pratchet has been diagnosed with a rare form of early onset Alzheimer's, should not write him off yet. I liked his statement on his web site.

AN EMBUGGERANCE

Folks,

I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news. I have been diagnosed with a very rare form of early
onset Alzheimer's, which lay behind this year's phantom "stroke".

We are taking it fairly philosophically down here and possibly with a mild optimism. For now work is continuing on the completion of Nation and the basic notes are already being laid down for Unseen Academicals. All other things being equal, I
expect to meet most current and, as far as possible, future commitments but will discuss things with the various organisers. Frankly, I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because I think there's time for at least a few more books yet :o)

PS I would just like to draw attention to everyone reading the above that this should
be interpreted as 'I am not dead'. I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as
will everybody else. For me, this maybe further off than you think - it's too soon to tell.
I know it's a very human thing to say "Is there anything I can do", but in this case I
would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry.

anyway you can watch the show the hogfather on youtube.

I despise Christmas, probably because I was once molested by some cunt in a santa costume.

I've got one Christmas card- it's displayed in my toilet. I doubt I'll get any others, and I couldn't give a peking duck, to be honest.

Plus, I loathe all the trees being cut down and then they get thrown away just a few weeks later, it sickens me.

and don't even get me started on the turkey you carve with a smile...

Little Known Christmas Fact
Not long ago and far away, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip...but there were problems everywhere.
Four of his elves were sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule.

Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her mom was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more.
When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven knows where. More Stress.

Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys. So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of coffee and a shot of whiskey. When he went to the cupboard, he found the elves had hidden the liquor and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he dropped the coffee pot and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the he kitchen floor.

He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw it was made from.
Just then the doorbell rang and Santa cussed on his way to the door. He opened the door and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said:

"Where would you like to put this tree Santa?"
And that my friends, is how the little angel came to be on top of the Christmas tree.

Silly, silly light, they come with a seperate thing that you plug in the mains and has a little pin thing that you connect to the lights. It's a safety thing I think. Anyway, i have OCD about putting away sodding decorations, all neat, correct boxes etc, etc, but I went to test them, and the plug was gone! Not like me at all, I'm so careful with stuff like that! Anyway, I had to trail around for an hour before I managed to find some more lights. (how can argos have sold out of lights???????????????????? Christmas is hardly a surprise, why the hell not order more stock????????????? ) and eventually, in the 5th shop (good old sainsburys!) I found some lights. they didn't have normal tree light, they had really nasty cheap looking clear ones (with bulbs you couldn't change for £10 (so expensive!) very expensive posh lights (I'm not paying £20 for lights!) or these pink fluffy ones for a tenner! More than I wanted to pay, but they are so cool! http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/5561/imag0002ac5.th.jpg (http://img229.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0002ac5.jpg) here is the tree before http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/3574/imag0008editedfq0.th.jpg (http://img86.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0008editedfq0.jpg)

I'm not done shopping by any means. Tomorrow. I'm doing my cards and finding any excuse to take breaks :)
It's snowing lightly here and the fam is holed up for the day...in fact, I'm the only one out of my PJ's.
