It's a while since we had a knitting thread. So here's somewhere to post your knitting projects, problems and ideas, your scary yarn stashes, etc.

My stash. Let me show it to you....

Aw, shucks!:o:D

Please do post yours - it might make me feel less of an oddity to have so much wool.

I'm just in the process of typing up and posting (on LJ and Craftster) the patterns for these daft wine cosies I've made. :)

Cheeky rogue!

There wasn't much that was rude on my MySpaz page, to be honest, but I didn't really want the Daily Mail making merry with that pic of two of the dolls (barely) dressed as go-go boys and knitted!TMYEM bulging away in his little shorts. It would only have raised the issue of anatomical correctness.

I never said it was my only hobby. There's the bicycles, the boxes of goods I meant to car-boot, the old martial arts gear, some saddles....:o

Oh, darn (heh); I was hoping to show your three bins to the wife as an example she should strive for.

As an aside, is the term "car boot sale" literal? Is that the usual way of getting rid of excess stuff over there? People just park by the side of the road and sell stuff? Here they're usually called "garage sales," even if you don't have a garage, or "yard sale" if you want to be totally literal. I could just ask my Yorkshire step-dad this, but that's not as fun.

Back to the knitting discussion, sorry.

A car boot is where you fill your car (usually the whole vehicle, not just the boot) with stuff to sell, drive off, then pay for a pitch on a field alongside lots of other folks doing the same thing, drag out all your stuff again and try to flog it to bargain-hunters.

I'm going to Lincoln this afternoon while Stig is playing hockey over there. I don't think I've ever walked around Lincoln; I'll take some sneaky cash in case I find a good wool shop. Shhhhh! :)

Lincoln was quite nice, really, once you got beyond the main shopping area, which was the usual line-up of BHS, Primark, M&S, etc.

I was saved (for now) from making a loincloth!Boz by an urgent request for a Jensen Ackles dolly. Phew! :D

Well, with a bit of stuffing re-arrangement, you can put little round tummies on these dollies. Although Jensen-to-be's about to get rather buff courtesy of some extra-fine elastic. Then I'll stitch his wickle plums in place...:o

Hahah! Well, at least Stig will wear his cardy. It's back-up for the one I knitted him about 10 years ago and which he's worn every winter since.

Thanks for that link. It looks pretty easy, so I might base my slot-mitts on it.

No! The needles are too big and they frighten me. Actually I plan to learn, have the basics, just ain't done it. My new hero is a woman who spins her own wool. She keeps a bunch of silly fat bunnies who get combed frequently, and she's got a share of an alpaca and some little goats, and she blends it with other stuff. I may start combing the cat more often.

I do embroidery!

Hoorah! Embroidery is verrrry punk, you know. At what age can kids begin knitting? My 5 y.o. expressed an interest in it the other day, but neither my wife nor my mom or mother-in-law are knitters. It seems complicated to me, but that's because I have a Y chromosome.

She does like to make those potholders that bogdana's talking about.

she can handle a nifty knitter, its available at michaels, AC moore or jo ann fabrics most of the time. pretty simple instructions. but its more like crochet than knitting. knitting with needles is a little harder.

I was knitting by about 5or 6, but my nan is an avid knitter (my other gran showed me how to crochet and do cross stich at a similar age, and my mum showed me to use a sewing machine at about 12!) Personally, I think 2 needle knitting is easier, less fiddly than Nifty Knitting, which I always struggled with as a child. You can get children's knitting needles, and try a childs book on knitting, I used to have one which helped. really though, it is best tought by someone:maybe a friend might be a secret knitter!

Ah, good, you got it. Btw, there are one or two balls in there that smell of hospital disinfectant. I have no idea why; they were from a mixed lot I bought on ebay and didn't have a use for. My house doesn't smell like that. My house smells of gin, scented candles and whatever I'm cooking. Just so you know....

Hey, TCM, looks like the NME missed out BIGTIME in their last week's "mighty" (boosh) issue by not showcasing your moz doll (complete with suckling child) (http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showpost.php?p=705714&postcount=143) in their online summary of the 'Stuff We Love' section which featured that book "Knitted Icons" (same one as the Daily Mail was pushing -- talked of earlier in this thread (http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showpost.php?p=686822&postcount=9)) ... looks like a great foreshadowing opp for this week's rag was wasted... :D

Well it's their loss, isn't it? Anyway, this being the NME, they'd have done something horrid in captioning the Morrissey dolly, with or without the baby. A friend of Boz's helpfully sent me the Daily Mail article in the post, but by that time it was too late to be included in the follow-up. Probably just as well....

I'm flattered and thank you, but I don't sell the dolls; I had an idea to do so, but when I worked out the labour costs in comparison to probable market value, it simply didn't make sense. So they remain a silly hobby. The pattern is on the web for everyone, though, and so long as you can cast-on, knit, purl, inc, dec and cast off again, you should be able to hack it easily. No fancy stitches - that's me! :D

There was a lot of Lulu on Ebay a few months ago because Home Discount were selling it at stupidly low prices (10 x 50g for £2.99, as I recall) and people were snapping it up and re-selling it online. Home Discount sell eyelash yarns for 59p per 50g (last time I looked, a few months back), so that's always worth a look.

What is the simplist and easiest way to learn to knit. Nothing fancy; things like making a blanket, etc.
I would actually like to know how and even teach the kids to do it too.

The very basics are well covered here:

Seeker, look for the book "Stitch and Bitch" by Debbie Stoller. Most libraries have it, and it has simple, easy instructions and some cool, simple projects. If you want to make a blanket, you might look into crochet. Knitting a whole blanket would take eons.

I'm heading out to the craft store right now. I want to get some green cotton yarn to go with the orange I already have to make the pumpkin baby hat for my sister's forthcoming offspring. (Hatfull's pattern.) And I also want to make a tiny Aran cardi for the little one, too. My sister will really appreciate it, so it's worth it. I've knit and crocheted a few things for my husband's sister's kids and she really didn't appreciate the effort or the sentiment, so I won't waste my time there again.

Stiggy never had a quiff. He had a big mop of curls - still has, if he lets it grow, which I wish he would. He should make the most of it; most men are greying and balding at his age.

I learned from my mother and grandmother, so I've never used a book for learning the basics. I don't think there's anything quite as good as having someone sitting with you, showing you the movements for you to copy, as you both murmur "in...over....through....off!"

Current modern knitting guru is Debbie Stoller of Stitch and Bitch fame. According to a comment below, she has basic stitch instructions in one of her books. Some of her patterns reportedly have errors, though, so bear that in mind as you progress. Scroll down again to the link I put in for a good basic online tutorial I spotted.

I was taught by my mother and grandmother too. Guess we were just lucky! I did have a good basic book once, but I think I gave it away. It was aimed at teenagers and published in the 80s, as I remember (the pattern for the striped knitted dress worked in a round was a bit of a give away, as were the legwarmers I made myself from that book :o ) but it was really good, taught you everything you needed to know. I think it was published by usborne books. i think this may be an updated version http://www.usborneonline.org/catalogue/browse.asp?org=WIL22863&css=1&subject=A&subcat=ACCASK&id=2247 I know it's aimed at teenagers, but it was fantasically easy to understand.

I just meant I don't understand patterns. It's going remarkably well otherwise. I think it's stocking stitch. I don't know, though. It goes knit one row, purl one row. My aunt gave me a one-off lesson.

Otherwise of what, exactly?:D Have you dropped stitch, accidentally gained extra stitches, purled when you should have knitted/vice-versa ? (I'm afraid the answer to all of these most common problems is "unravel until you get back as far as the mistake, correct the mistake and start again from there".)

Yes, that's stocking stitch, hereafter termed "ss".

Oh, I'm sorry, but..... HAHAHAHA! That cracked me up. :D

My needles turned up; they're so tiny it's impractical and apparently, needles go right down to a old English 24! Must be for lace or something.

I think I did all that in my first piece. :p However, the wool got all tangled in that one so I started a new one last week. I had to teach myself to cast on because I couldn't remember. This one has gone pretty well so far, no real mistakes (yet).

So why are you asking for help?

So why are you asking for help?

Because I don't really know how to knit. It's a miracle it's gone right for this long.

The whole reason I was taught to knit was so I could knit a bag that my aunt got me for Christmas, and I can't do that beause I don't understand the instructions.

Okay, quote the bits of the instructions that you don't understand. Better still scan the pattern and post it, pointing out the problem areas.

Polish? If it's Russian, I can't speak it. I can't speak it if it's Polish either, for that matter. Is it Serbian? I don't speak that, either.

I really cannot knit anything useful! This scarf is just going to be a long continous strip of knitted wool. :tears:

Okay, quote the bits of the intructions that you don't understand.

It says about 'when introducing colour B for garter stitch stripes, do not fasten off yarn but carry up sides of work.'

I only know one way to change the colour and I had to teach myself it today. :tears: How do you carry up the side with it?
And how does garter stitch work?

Well, it's just going to be stocking stitch. I don't know how to do any other stitch. So it's currently all curling up at the end.

Yes, but it's also vital experience in which Franzanna will come to understand the essentials on casting on/off, knitting/purling and how her natural knitting tension varies ( if at all) from the stated average tension assumed in knitting patterns.

What exactly is knitting tension? :o I've seen it written a lot, and I haven't a clue what it actually means.

This is to save you having to break off and re-attach the colour you've temporarily finished with. Breaking off the colour every time you move to the next colour will leave you with loads of fiddly ends to darn in when you've finished the scarf.

Instead, the pattern is telling you to twist the carried yarn ( by which I mean the colour you've finished with for the time being) in with the current colour at the end of the row, so that when you come to re-introduce the carried colour, you're not left with a big loop of yarn at the side of your work.

If you look at the reverse side of your stocking stitch knitting, that looks a bit like both sides would look like if you missed the purl rows from your stocking stitch. Garter stitch looks much like that; it's all knit and no purl.

It's the tightness at which you knit. My tension is naturally a little loose, meaning that I have to use a size or so smaller than the recommended needle size to get the same result from a given pattern.
