Has anyone here had professional counselling/ psychotherapy. Does it work?
I've been feeling the need for a while now and events on Saturday (no not England winning the rugby either nor Pete's PA!) have left me questioning who I am (quite literally) where i'm from etc etc.
I have a lot of negativity and resentment about important events in my past and really need to address these issues. Hence this step?!?
So without going into too much detail did it work for you? Oh dear. I do feel like a bit of a melon admitting I have personal issues and need professional help but Thats Life!

is this about the kids who egged you?
Busy Clippers October 15, 2007, 01:37 PM I had to go to grief counseling when George Clooney left E.R. I think it helped.
My suggestion for you is to try Daveism. Even better, get Drunken Goldfish and Chica to come back to solo and start an Official Psychoanalyzing Bluebirds Thread.
I'm not joking about that last part.

You're on a Morrissey forum; of course you have issues.
I've had two experiences with them. First, my parents sent me to a psychiatrist/psychologist (don't know the difference) when I was 11 because they (my parents) were too thick to see that my problems stemmed from their impending divorce. I refused to talk after the first few minutes, and the shrink eventually gave up and asked my parents not to bring me back. Second, my girlfriend & I went to a relationship counselor in college. The counselor was a grad student, and she was so pathetic ("Okay, now show me how you fight--go ahead, start arguing about something.") that we just started laughing and walked out. It actually did help in a way, since we rallied against a common "enemy", and we've now been married for 9 years. Third, while it doesn't qualify as on official experience, my wife's sister is now a professor of psychology and heads up a counseling unit at a university in NYC. Having known her since she was 14 (she's now 30) is pretty damn near to having a fucking therapist that you can't avoid.
Needless to say, I wouldn't see another therapist if my life depended on it. Sadly, sometimes it probably does. I hope that your experience will be better.

HA HA HA. How did you guess?? And losing my keys last week.
Kewpie October 15, 2007, 01:52 PM It's not my experience, but my sister went to see a councelor when she had some trouble.
She found her councellor was helpful and recommened the brother.
However, he didn't understand the concept of the councelling, didn't bother to see the councelor again.
It takes sometime, but you should try to find the one you find comfortable to talk about your problem.
Good luck.

Hopefully you can get the help you need. You are not a 'melon' but a person who needs some guidance in their life. Good luck with it dear boy:)
slum mum 1974 October 15, 2007, 02:23 PM Hey Bluebirds, we all have times in our lives when things like life is hurling the biggest obstacles at us (trust me i know, i have had my fair share recently) If you have tried everything else and it hasn't worked, why not try it? You never know it may just be the thing you need to get your head straight. Talking to a stranger who doesn't know you and what has happened in your life may help show you a different perspective on where you are going in life and they just might help you. Good luck and don't forget you a wonderful person.
sistasheila October 15, 2007, 04:01 PM i was thinking about it too but i had one bad experience with one therapist years ago i found it also hard to open up to someone who i doent know for long...so i step back from the idea
but the last year i was struggling again very bad and had a nervous breakdown shortly before christmas-i was so close to go into a clinic for a few days but i decided against it
..had problems since teenage years but i am totally against antidepressivants i dont wanna take something that changes my personality...what are your thoughts on medical treatments on depressions?

I totally agree with you re: antidepressants. Damn near all of my family members are on 'em, and not only do they seem to have no positive effect on any of them, they have the added side effect of making those family members proselytize about antidepressants constantly.
RichardofEngland October 15, 2007, 04:47 PM Yes, i have seen three shrinks in the past. Two of them were quite useless.
I dont really have too high an opinion of psychotherapists.
I guess it depends what you want to see them for. Ive had some minor problems with OCD and depression in the past. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was quite helpful.
Happy pills are okay, but i'd rather not nowadays.
sistasheila March 4, 2008, 05:28 PM iam still unsure if i really should take medication...cause if i ever manage to see a psychotherapist AGAIN i guess with 27 its already too late to just work on my problens with a conversation alone..if i had alreday gone to one when i was a teenager it would have helped me but i guess i waited too long im at a low point right now it couldnt get worser than right now anyway....
have anyone ever heard of Transcranial magnetic and cranial electrotherapy stimulation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_depression
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cranial_electrotherapy_stimulation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repetitive_transcranial_magnetic_stimulation
they use it instead of mediacation i saw a documentary about it it looks pretty frightening but i serously consider it...
paintavulgarpicture March 4, 2008, 05:46 PM I also, was sent to talk to a doctor about my "anger issues" when I was about fourteen, but that was primarily because of my parents divorce. However, when I saw the doctor, i refused to talk, so the whole experience didn't help at all - however I'm probably to fault for that.
However, although I don't think counselling is necessarily a bad thing, I think I would find it hard to be totally open and personal with a stranger. I find talking to my closest friends, those that know me the best, is more helpful.
However, if you really feel like you need professional help, then seek it. If you don't like it, you never have to go back. If you do, then I hope it will make you feel a lot better about whatever personal problems you have.

it's all about lifestyle choices. have you considered taking up rollerblading?
anyway, whichever option you pursue, enjoy!
Poppy Full March 4, 2008, 07:44 PM Hi Bluebirds
I went to a therapist because of self-harm for a while when I was 15. To be honest, I absolutely detested it, and really didn't warm to my therapist who I believed to be really smug.:( But I also think that it's alot to do with the kind of person you are...I probably wasn't open to it and that's why I stopped going. It's an individual thing and don't let my opinion change it for you! Good luck with whatever you decide xxx
mozzia March 4, 2008, 08:02 PM Everyones personal experience is different with these things. Depends on so many factors: how you approach it, how your counsellor approaches it, if you feel able to 'open up' to them; what it is you are seeing them for; whether you've ever talked to someone else about the problems... i'll stop listing now :o
Anyway, my experience, has been with one person, who i saw maybe 8 times. The things I was talking to her about, i had rarely had the chance to talk about before, and i found it helpful to do so. Also, it was one part of the getting help and getting better, and i saw it as such. I saw it as something that would help, and, all in all, i think it did. It has led to other things, on her recommendation, which i've also found/am finding helpful.
Sooo, counselling was positive for me. :)
EPbabe March 4, 2008, 09:49 PM I did see a psychologist regularly when I was ill with depression. The illness itself and the counselling lasted 3 years. I haven't had any symptoms for the last 12 years. And she is now one of my best friends, despite she's 30 years older than me. :)
MunchyBrain March 5, 2008, 07:59 AM I see a therapist now. It doesn't really help, but I get to miss school, so I guess it does in a way. :)

Don't know if this is still relevant, but yes and yes :). I saw a psychologist as a teenager and am seeing one now, and words cannot express how much it's helped me. The trick is to find a good one who is right for you. You usually know after 2-3 times if you like their style, if not don't hesitate to keep looking. Chemistry is very important- sometimes people think that "thearpy is not right for them", when they were just seeing the wrong person. Good luck!

I wonder if an therapist really could help me better than my best friend i have no problem to open up to her and she has good advice (she is a little hobby therapist reading mags like psychology today) but i can never to put it into action if you know wht i mean..so what else do a therapist do than listening to your problems what a friend does already-for free...and i know myself if a friend or a therapist tell me to change this and that it makes no difference.... i cannot put it into action
so a therapist might be better trained than my friend
i must say i found it easier to talk on the phone about my problems even with my best friend..but sitting in front of a stranger and i have to know him or her very well before i open it and we can start working on our problems.i did see one as a teenager and i didnt work out
and this might be taken too long...
so i wonder about that electro /magnetic therapy does anyone tried it?
Please March 7, 2008, 05:44 PM So i guess i'm the only one on here who has;nt had any therapy :tears:
Such an outsider, maybe i should get therapy?

I've not tried electro/magnetic therapy, so can't comment on it really, but it sounds like an interesting idea.
You are in a different situation to I was. I had never been able to talk openly to anyone about my problems, until I saw the therapist, so found it a great relief to do so. However, you have your friend, who you feel able to open up to, so seeing a therapist wouldn't be such a huge initial help, i guess.
However, I do think there may be a few things you could benefit from, from seeing a therapist. Getting a different, less personal perspective on what you say. Your friend is close, so will find it hard to see your situation in a 'professional' way. But, obviously, if you feel that just talking to your friend is fine, then thats great. :)
About putting things into action. I'll PM you if you wish, about what i found helpful :)
Ilmarė March 8, 2008, 01:11 PM I used to went therapy couple years ago, it helped, but when the terapist changed, it wasn't nice anymore. He was not unpolite or anything, but it just didn't felt good. Nowadays I don't feel like I have to talk about my little problems.
